Best Free Hookup Apps in 2026 (Really Free)

The best free hookup apps are the ones that let you match and message without paying: Tinder for the biggest pool, Feeld for open-minded and kinky singles and couples, Grindr and Sniffies for gay and bi men, and HER for queer women. Down and OkCupid also let you chat for free. Skip anything that makes you pay to send a message, like Pure or the credit-based chat sites, because “free” there only means free to sign up.

Below: the ranking, a free-to-message check for every app (who can start a chat, what the cheapest upgrade costs on the App Store in October 2026), the pay-to-chat traps, how to cancel a trial before it renews, and the safety basics for meeting a stranger. If you want sex-first sites rather than apps, my hookup dating sites ranking covers those.

Ratings are out of 5. Where I have a full review, the rating comes from it and is linked. Store ratings and prices come from each app’s US App Store listing, linked in its section. Prices checked October 2026.

How I ranked them

I have not used these apps for this ranking. It is built from public information: each app’s App Store listing, help center and pricing, its published safety tools, and Pew Research data on who uses dating apps and why. Each app gets 1 to 5 points on value for money, safety and verification, evidence of an active user base, features for people who want something casual, and transparency about prices, auto-renewal and cancellation, averaged and rounded to the half point. Ratings from my full reviews are reused as published. The order also weighs how much of the app works without paying, which is the whole point of this page: an app with a great paid tier and a useless free one ranks lower.

A reality check before you download anything. In Pew Research’s survey of 6,034 US adults (July 2022), 24% of recent online daters said casual sex was a major reason they used an app, and men were far more likely than women to say so (31% vs 13%). That gap is why free apps for men can feel slow, and why the paid upsell is so tempting. Pay only once the free version has shown you real people nearby.

1. Tinder: the best free hookup app overall

Tinder is still where the most people are. Pew found 46% of online dating users had used it, and 79% of users under 30. For casual dating, volume is everything: more people nearby means more people who want the same thing you do. Tinder’s help center says the free version lets you match, chat and connect, and you must be 18 or older.

Paying buys reach, not access. The App Store listing shows Tinder Plus at $9.99 and Tinder Gold items from $13.99 to $24.99, with 4.2 stars from 1.8M ratings (October 2026). The listing also says that if you do not buy a plan, “you can simply continue using Tinder for free”. It does not say how long each item lasts, so check the price inside the app before you tap buy. My Tinder review goes through every tier and rates it 4 out of 5.

Who it suits: anyone who wants the most options and does not mind sorting through them. The catch: every intention is mixed together, so say “casual” clearly in your bio. Visit Tinder.

2. Feeld: best free app for kink-curious and open-minded hookups

Feeld is built for people who want something other than the standard script: ethical non-monogamy, couples looking for a third, kink-curious singles. Feeld’s help center says its core features are free for everybody and that anyone can make connections at no cost. Majestic, its one paid membership, adds unlimited likes, seeing who likes you, Incognito, private photos and one free Ping a day.

The App Store lists Majestic at $29.99 for 30 days, $49.99 for 90 days and $149.99 for a year, and single Pings at $2.99 (4.3 stars from 102K ratings, October 2026). Profiles carry “desires” tags, more than 30 of them per Feeld’s guide to profile terms, including GGG, which Feeld defines as “good, giving, and game”. My Feeld review rates it 4 out of 5, and the polyamory dating apps hub goes further if non-monogamy is the main point.

Who it suits: singles and couples who want to be upfront about desires from the first screen. The catch: the wrong app for plain one-on-one dating. Visit Feeld.

3. Grindr: best free hookup app for gay and bi men

Grindr’s App Store listing calls it the world’s number one free dating app for the LGBTQ community, and the free features cover what most people need: see people nearby by location, chat, share private photos and albums, add and search tags, and filter. It has 4.5 stars from 389K ratings (October 2026), the strongest store score on this list.

What you pay for: Grindr XTRA (listed from $14.99 to $22.99) and Grindr Unlimited ($27.99 to $44.99), which adds unlimited profiles, the full Viewed Me list, Incognito and unsending messages and photos. If you only want a busy weekend in a new city, the Unlimited Day Pass at $9.99 is the cheapest way in. Grindr is for adults 18 and older only. I do not have a full Grindr review yet, so its 4 comes from the rubric above.

Who it suits: gay, bi, trans and queer men who want people close by, fast. The catch: you cannot see who is behind a faceless profile, so ask for a face photo or a quick video call before you meet. For more options, see my LGBTQ+ dating sites page.

4. Sniffies: best free option for anonymous cruising

Sniffies is a map-based cruising platform for gay, bi and bi-curious men. Its Wikipedia entry notes two things that make it the most “free” app here: you do not need to register to use it (some features need a free account), and it runs in your browser. Its iOS app was pulled from the App Store in May 2025, and Sniffies said its web app stayed fully operational. The paid tier, Sniffies Plus, removes ads and adds features such as hosting groups and pinning chats.

Activity is real: when Match Group announced a $100 million investment in 2026, it cited an estimated 3 million monthly active users and more than 20 million messages a day. My Sniffies review rates it 3.5 out of 5.

Who it suits: men who want spontaneous local meetups without a face picture on an app. The catch: your approximate location sits on a live map, and since people can use it without registering, you cannot know who is behind a profile until you check. Visit Sniffies.

5. HER: best free hookup app for queer women

HER is a dating and community app for lesbian, bi, queer, nonbinary and trans people. Its App Store listing says “all of our core features are completely free”, including matching and chatting, and claims 14 million+ members. Premium, listed from $14.99 a month, removes ads and unlocks extras (4.4 stars from 65K ratings, October 2026).

HER is not a hookup app first: it mixes dating with a social feed, groups and events, so say clearly in your profile that you want something casual. My HER review rates it 4 out of 5 and details what the free tier leaves out.

Who it suits: queer women who want a space without straight men in the way. The catch: in small towns the free feed runs out fast. Visit HER.

6. Down: best for marking each match as casual

Down’s trick is that you choose, person by person, whether you want a date or something more casual, and you only hear about it when the other person picks the same. The App Store listing says the app is free to download and use, and that all users must now be photo-verified, which is more than most free apps require. The optional VIP membership is listed at $19.99 for one month and auto-renews (4.3 stars from 130K ratings, October 2026).

No full review yet, so its 3.5 comes from the rubric: good safety and a clear purpose, but less public proof of a busy US user base than Tinder or Grindr. Who it suits: people who want to stop guessing what a match is after. The catch: weekly VIP items are expensive, up to $24.99 a week on the listing.

7. OkCupid: best free app for casual dating with filters

OkCupid is not sold as a hookup app, but it is one of the few big apps that lets you say exactly what you want, including casual and non-monogamous dating, and still chat for free. Its App Store listing calls it “a free dating app for everyone” with an optional premium that lets you see who likes you without liking them first and send unlimited likes. Premium items run from $7.99 to $59.99 on the listing, which does not say how long each lasts (4.3 stars from 289K ratings, October 2026).

My OkCupid review rates it 4 out of 5. Who it suits: people who want casual but care about politics, lifestyle or kink compatibility. The catch: many members want relationships, so be clear in your profile.

8. HUD: a no-strings app that still works free

HUD is upfront about being a casual app. Its App Store listing lists live video verification, photo protection blur and video chat, and says that if you do not buy HUD Premium “you can simply continue using HUD for free”. Paid options start at $14.99 for one week of Premium and reach $49.99 for one month of Diamond (4.1 stars from 208K ratings, October 2026).

My HUD review rates it 3 out of 5: the concept is honest, but fake and abandoned accounts and a heavy paywall hold it back. Who it suits: people in bigger cities who want an app with no relationship pretense. The catch: short plans are pricey, so do not buy a week of Premium on impulse.

What you can do free on each app

“Free to download” and “free to talk” are not the same thing. This is the test that matters: can a free member send a message to someone they matched with? Sources are the App Store listings and help centers linked above, plus my reviews where noted. Prices checked October 2026.

AdultFriendFinderNo: messaging needs a paid plan (per my review)Messaging, search, videoNot shown before sign-up

When is paying worth it? Only when the free version proves there are active people near you and the one thing you are missing is on the paid list. On Tinder or Grindr, a short plan before a trip can make sense. A subscription on an app where nobody replies to you for free will not fix that: it just shows you more people who are not replying. Pew found 35% of online daters have ever paid for a dating platform, so most people never do.

Free to join, pay to talk: the hookup apps that are not really free

Plenty of hookup sites call themselves free because the sign-up form costs nothing. Here is what happens next on the best-known ones.

  • Pure: the App Store listing says plainly, “you have to subscribe to get inside”. Only subscribers can go online and chat; plans run $13.49 a week or $29.99 a month and auto-renew (4.3 stars from 86K ratings, October 2026). Some ranking pages still say Pure is free for women, which the current listing does not support. Its anonymity is real, and my Pure review rates it 3.5, but it does not belong on a free list.
  • AdultFriendFinder: free to register, and the homepage repeats “Join for Free Now!”. My AdultFriendFinder review explains that free members can browse, wink and post in forums, but sending and receiving messages needs a paid membership. The AFF homepage also states in its footer that “persons appearing in photographs and videos may not be actual members” and that it “does not conduct criminal background screening of its members”. It rates 3.8 in my review and works best for people ready to pay. Visit AdultFriendFinder.
  • Flirt.com: free signup, paid messaging, prices hidden until the payment page and auto-renewing trials, per my Flirt.com review, which rates it 2 out of 5.
  • Only-Flirts: a pay-per-message site. My Only-Flirts review rates it 2.5 out of 5 and describes profiles that keep you chatting but never agree to meet.
My verdict: if a hookup site lets you sign up free but charges per message or sells credits, treat it as paid chat, not a free hookup app. The free apps ranked above let you talk to real matches without spending anything, so start there.

How to tell a free hookup app from a pay-to-chat trap

You can check most apps in a couple of minutes, before you hand over a card number. Go in this order and stop at the first red flag.

Four-step check: free chat with matches, no pay per message, prices shown up front, then use it free and skip trials
Examples come from the App Store listings and reviews linked on this page, checked October 2026.
  1. Can a free member message a match? Read the store listing, not the ads. Pure’s listing, for example, says you must subscribe to chat at all.
  2. Is chat sold by the message or by credits? Credits mean the site earns more the longer a conversation lasts, which is the setup behind the Only-Flirts complaints.
  3. Are prices shown before you sign up? On the App Store they are, under In-App Purchases. Sites that hide them until checkout (Flirt.com, AdultFriendFinder) deserve extra caution.
  4. Is there a trial that renews? Every paid plan on this page auto-renews unless you turn it off at least 24 hours before the period ends, per the listings. Use the free tier, and if you take a trial, cancel it the same day so it simply runs out.

How to cancel before a trial renews

Deleting the app does not cancel anything. Google Play’s help page says it plainly: when you uninstall the app, your subscription won’t cancel.

  • iPhone: per Apple’s support page, open Settings, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, tap the app, then Cancel Subscription. If you see no Cancel button, it is already canceled.
  • Android: open the Google Play subscriptions page, pick the subscription, tap Cancel subscription and follow the prompts.
  • Paid on the website: cancel in the site’s own account settings; the app stores cannot stop a charge they did not take.

Several listings (Tinder, Down, HER, HUD) also say no cancellation is allowed during the active period, so cancelling stops the next charge, not the current one.

Bumble, Hinge and Plenty of Fish for casual dating

Bumble and Hinge come up on most free hookup lists, and both let you match and message free. They lean toward dating, though, and Bumble has changed how chats start. Some lists still say women must message first. Bumble’s help center (updated October 2026) says both people now get one opening message, you have 72 hours from matching to send yours, and Opening Moves are gone. My Hinge vs Bumble comparison covers both, and my best dating apps for casual dating list ranks them for people who want casual dates rather than straight hookups.

Plenty of Fish is still free to message. Its Google Play listing says a mutual match unlocks unlimited messaging, and you get one First Contact message a day to someone you have not matched with (3.7 stars from 1.68M reviews, October 2026). See my Plenty of Fish review.

Which hookup app is 100% free?

None of the hookup apps above is 100% free: all of them sell something. The closest thing to fully free among mainstream options is Facebook Dating. Meta describes it as “a free dating experience within the Facebook app”, designed so you do not have to pay to unlock product features. It is built for dating rather than hookups, and it lives inside your Facebook account, which not everyone wants. For more no-cost options, see my list of completely free dating apps and the free dating sites hub.

Staying safe on free hookup apps

Free apps cost scammers nothing too. In Pew’s survey, 52% of online daters said they had come across someone they thought was trying to scam them. A few rules cut most of the risk:

  • Verify before you meet. Down says all its users are photo-verified, HUD offers live video verification, and Tinder’s listing mentions several ways to verify profiles. Elsewhere, ask for a short video call. Someone who refuses is a no.
  • Stay on the app until you meet. The FTC’s romance scam guide lists pushing you to move the chat off the platform, and excuses for never meeting in person, as classic signs.
  • Never send money. No gift cards, wire transfers, payment apps or crypto, the payment methods the FTC says scammers ask for. A real hookup never needs a deposit.
  • Meet in public first, tell a friend where you are, and get there and back on your own.
  • Keep intimate photos to yourself until you know who you are dealing with. A stranger with your photos can try to blackmail you.
  • Report and block anyone who pressures you or asks for money, using the app’s own tools. If you lost money, report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and call your bank right away.

Looking for a discreet affair rather than a single’s hookup? That is a different set of sites, covered in my affair dating sites hub and my Ashley Madison review.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free hookup app?

Tinder is the best free hookup app for most people: it has the biggest pool and its free version lets you match and chat. Feeld is the better pick if you are kink-curious or non-monogamous, Grindr and Sniffies for gay and bi men, and HER for queer women.

What dating sites offer free chat without paying?

Tinder, Feeld, Grindr, HER, Down, OkCupid and Plenty of Fish all let free members message their matches. Sniffies even lets you browse without registering. Pure, AdultFriendFinder and credit-based sites like Only-Flirts make you pay before you can really talk.

Which dating site is 100% free?

No hookup app is 100% free: each one sells upgrades. Facebook Dating is the closest mainstream option, since Meta says you do not pay to unlock its features, but it is built for dating rather than hookups.

Is Plenty of Fish still free?

Yes. Its Google Play listing says a mutual match unlocks unlimited messaging, and free members get one First Contact message a day to someone they have not matched with. Paid features add extras such as seeing who liked you.

What does GGG mean in dating?

GGG stands for “good, giving, and game”, a phrase for being a generous, open-minded partner. Feeld lists it as one of the desires you can add to your profile so people with the same mindset can find you.
