Sniffy Review 2026: Legit or Waste of Money?

If you searched for the Sniffy dating app, you almost certainly mean Sniffies: a legit, very active, map-based cruising app for gay, bi and curious men, built for fast local hookups rather than dating. The free version does the main job (map, profiles, chat), so it is not a waste of money, and Sniffies Plus (from $15.99 a month on Sniffies’ own chart) only pays off if you want discreet mode, travel mode or unlimited profiles. Skip it if you want a boyfriend, an app-store app or verified profiles for everyone.

My verdict: Legit, and free is enough for most people. Try the free map first, use the free week of Plus that new accounts get before paying anything, and remember Plus is non-refundable and renews on its own. Best for men who want quick, local, low-pressure meetups and like staying anonymous; not my pick for dating, for anyone who wants an app in the App Store or Google Play, or for anyone uneasy about their approximate location being on a live map.

What is Sniffies (and is “Sniffy” the same app)?

Sniffies is a cruising platform founded in 2018 in Seattle by Blake Gallagher, according to its Wikipedia entry. Instead of a grid of faces, it opens on a live map with the approximate positions of nearby men, active groups and popular cruising spots. It runs in the browser at sniffies.com, on a phone or a computer, and you must be over 18 to enter.

“Sniffy” is a common misspelling, and it causes real confusion. The app actually called Sniffy on Google Play is a social network for pet owners made by a Brazilian studio, with 100+ downloads. APK download sites also list unofficial “Sniffy” gay chat apps. None of these is Sniffies, and I would not install an APK from a directory site to get it.

Who runs Sniffies now: the Match Group deal

In April 2026 Match Group, the owner of Tinder and Hinge, announced a $100 million investment in Sniffies: a significant minority stake with an option to buy the rest later. Sniffies stays founder-led and runs independently for now. The same release gives the only hard size numbers I could find: an estimated 3 million monthly active users worldwide and more than 20 million messages sent every day.

That deal is why some users worry Sniffies will “sell out” and look more like a mainstream dating app (a video ranking for this search asks exactly that). So far the product is unchanged, but it is worth watching if the no-frills feel is what you like.

Who it is for (and what people actually do on it)

Sniffies is upfront: it is for hooking up, not for dinner dates. The map, the filters and the live features all aim at the shortest path from “who is near me” to meeting up. Its own HUSH blog says it caters to bi, discreet and straight-curious men as much as to gay men, and anonymous use is a big part of the appeal.

    • Good fit: men who want spontaneous, local meetups; bi or curious men who do not want a face picture on an app; travelers who want to see what is active in another city.
    • Poor fit: anyone looking for a relationship (try a dating-first app instead), anyone who wants to stay off a location map, and people outside big cities, where the map can be quiet.
    • Not for: anyone under 18. Some places also require a photo ID or selfie age check before adult content shows (more below).

    How Sniffies works

You can open the map and “use anonymously” without an email, or create a free registered profile. Sniffies’ app text warns that logging out deletes an anonymous profile, so register if you want to keep chats.

    • The map: nearby cruisers shown at approximate locations (your exact spot stays private), plus groups and Places, which are cruising spots where people can check in.
    • Filters: launched in 2024, they sort by age, role and body type among others, per Wikipedia.
    • Chat: one-to-one messages with photos. Chats expire after a while unless you are on Plus and pin them.
    • Groups: group meetups; joining is free, hosting needs Plus.
    • Cruising Updates: a local message board for cruisers within a 30-mile radius. Everyone can read it, posting needs Plus.
    • Vanilla mode: blurs explicit images so you can open the map in public.
    • LivePlay: built-in video chat, metered in minutes.

Is there a Sniffies app? iPhone, Android and the web

Not in the stores, as of October 2026. Sniffies launched an iPhone app in March 2025, but Apple removed it in May 2025 over content rules; people who already had it could keep using it (Wikipedia). A search of the US App Store today returns no Sniffies app, and there is no Sniffies listing on Google Play.

What you use instead is the web app: go to sniffies.com in Safari or Chrome and add it to your home screen. It works like an app, but browser push notifications depend on your phone and browser settings. The upside of staying off the stores, as Sniffies’ own HUSH blog puts it, is fewer content limits than Apple and Google allow.

Is the Sniffy dating app free? What you get without paying

Yes. The map, profiles, messaging, groups and filters all work for free, with ads. Sniffies Plus adds comfort and privacy tools. Here is the split, from the Plus feature list shown inside the Sniffies web app:

    FeatureFreeSniffies Plus

    AdsYesNone

Features checked October 2026 in the Sniffies web app. There is no “who viewed my profile” list on either tier: the closest Plus features are read receipts and seeing who deleted a conversation.

Sniffies Plus price and the fine print

Sniffies does not publish a full price list outside the app: you see the plans after you log in. The one public number from Sniffies itself is the comparison chart on its HUSH blog, which says Plus starts at $15.99 a month, against $19.99 for “other apps” on a comparable plan. Prices checked October 2026. Older figures that still rank, such as $11.99 a month in a 2022 blog post, are out of date.

The checkout text in the app is clearer than the prices, and it is the part that decides whether Plus is a waste of money:

    • Free week first: new registered accounts are offered a free week of Plus, and a referral that leads to a paid upgrade earns another free week.
    • Plans: a 1-week plan and month-based plans.
    • Non-refundable: Plus is described as “a non-refundable subscription that auto-renews under identical terms” unless you cancel. If a trial rolls into a plan, the card is charged when the trial ends.
    • Apple billing: if you bought Plus in the old iPhone app, Apple bills it, and it renews unless you turn it off at least 24 hours before the period ends.
    • LivePlay minutes: sold separately in 30-minute steps, from 30 to 720 minutes.

My take: use the free week, see whether discreet or travel mode changes anything for you, and turn auto-renew off on day one if you are not sure. You keep Plus until the period ends.

    Safety, verification and scams

Sniffies does more here than most hookup sites, but the core risk stays the same: you meet strangers fast, often with no face photo.

    • Age checks: where local law requires it, Sniffies asks for a photo ID plus a selfie matched to it, or a selfie-based age estimate, before showing adult content. Its consent screen says face geometry is processed for age verification only and that personal data is deleted after validation.
    • Verified badge: Plus members can show a Verified Cruiser badge. Free and anonymous profiles do not have one, so most people you see are unverified.
    • Scam flags: the app labels incoming messages as potential spam, potential money scam, potential off-platform scam or automated messages. Treat those labels as a stop sign.
    • Reporting: report options include fake or duplicate profiles, harassment, spam, and “Requests or Offers Money” (offering money or gifts in exchange for sex, which the rules ban). You can also ask for content to be removed, including non-consensual intimate images, and Sniffies says those requests are handled within 7 business days.
    • Location: the map shows an approximate position, not your exact one, and Plus’s discreet mode hides you completely.

The scams to expect are the classic ones. The app itself warns about extortion, identity theft and card fraud. The FTC’s romance scam guide lists the pattern: someone pushes you off the platform fast, has a reason not to meet, then asks for money by gift card, crypto or wire. If someone threatens to share your photos unless you pay, do not pay, keep the messages, report the profile and file a report with the FBI’s IC3.

For meetups: keep chatting inside Sniffies until you trust someone, use LivePlay or a quick video call to check he matches his photos, tell a friend where you are going, and get there on your own. Profiles can list sexual health details such as testing dates, and Sniffies shows testing clinics on the map (sourced from the CDC and HRSA, per the app), which is useful but no substitute for your own precautions.

    Fake profiles and complaints

There is no App Store or Google Play rating to quote, because Sniffies has no live store listing. The pages that rank for this search agree on the basics: it is busy, very direct and explicitly about sex, which is the point for its users and the problem for anyone who wanted dating. A top Reddit thread sums it up as built for hookups, with everyone able to see where you roughly are. The recurring worries are spam and scam messages (which is why the app now flags them), blank anonymous profiles you cannot check, and where the Match Group deal will take it. Its scale is real, though: 3 million monthly users and 20 million messages a day, by Match Group’s numbers.

    Pros and cons

    Pros

    • The free version covers the map, chat, groups and filters.
    • Anonymous use without an email, and vanilla mode for public browsing.
    • Large, active network, especially in cities.
    • Real safety tools: ID age checks where required, scam flags, detailed reporting, content removal.
    • Works on any phone or computer through the browser.

    Cons

    • Not in the App Store or Google Play, and look-alike “Sniffy” apps cause confusion.
    • Prices only visible after login; Plus is non-refundable and auto-renews.
    • Most profiles are unverified and many are anonymous.
    • Free chats expire, and only Plus can pin them.
    • Built for hookups only: not a dating app.

How to cancel Sniffies Plus and delete your account

Where you paid decides where you cancel, and deleting your account is a separate, final step.

Flow chart: turn off Sniffies Plus auto-renew on sniffies.com or in Apple subscriptions, then delete the account, which gives no refund
Steps from the Sniffies web app’s account settings and Apple’s help page, checked October 2026.
    1. Paid on sniffies.com: open Account Settings, go to Membership (Sniffies Plus and LivePlay) and switch Auto-Renew off. Plus stays active until the end of the period you paid for.
    2. Paid in the iPhone app: open iPhone Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions, pick Sniffies and cancel (Apple’s steps). Deleting the web app or the old app does not cancel anything.
    3. Delete the account: Account Settings, then Delete Account, and confirm with your password. Sniffies warns this cannot be undone and that any Plus membership is canceled with no refund for the remaining time, so cancel first and delete once the paid period is over. An anonymous profile is deleted as soon as you log out.

    Sniffies alternatives

    • Grindr: the grid app most men compare Sniffies with, in both app stores, with a broader social and dating mix.
    • Adam4Adam: a free, long-running site and app for gay and bi men, hookup-friendly, with a full desktop site.
    • MenNation: a gay site with video profiles, chat rooms and webcams.
    • Taimi: an LGBTQ+ dating and social app if you want more than a hookup.
    • Feeld: for open-minded and kink-curious people of all genders who want profiles with more depth.

    How I rate it

My 3.5 out of 5 is based on public pricing, features, safety tools, platform reputation and value, not on hands-on use. Value for money 3.5 (a genuinely useful free tier and a free trial week, but Plus is non-refundable and costs about as much as bigger apps), safety and verification 3 (ID age checks where required, scam flags, detailed reporting and content removal, but most profiles are unverified and anonymous), evidence of an active user base 4.5 (3 million monthly users and 20 million daily messages per Match Group), features for its audience 4.5 (live map, Places, groups, travel and discreet modes, video chat), transparency 2.5 (prices hidden until login, no store listing, look-alike names). Average 3.6, rounded to 3.5.

    Frequently asked questions

Is Sniffies a good dating app?

Sniffies is good at what it is built for: fast, local, often anonymous hookups between men, on a live map. It is not a dating app in the usual sense, with no prompts or compatibility matching. If you want a relationship, a dating-first app will suit you better.

Is there a Sniffies app anymore?

Not in the stores as of October 2026. Apple removed the iPhone app in May 2025, two months after launch, and there is no Sniffies listing on Google Play. You use it in your phone's browser at sniffies.com and can add it to your home screen.

How much does Sniffies cost per month?

The map, profiles and chat are free. Sniffies' own comparison chart says Sniffies Plus starts at $15.99 a month, and the full price list only appears after you log in. Plus is non-refundable and auto-renews, and new accounts are offered a free week first.

Can I use Sniffies without paying?

Yes. You can even use it anonymously without an email, though an anonymous profile is deleted when you log out. Free users get the map, profiles, chat and groups; Plus adds discreet mode, travel mode, unlimited profiles, pinned chats and no ads.

Can you see who viewed you on Sniffies?

No. Neither the free tier nor Sniffies Plus lists who viewed your profile. Plus does add read receipts and shows who deleted a conversation.

Is the Sniffy app on Google Play the same as Sniffies?

No. The app named Sniffy on Google Play is a social network for pet owners from a Brazilian developer. Sniffies has no Google Play app, so avoid APK sites offering a "Sniffy" gay chat app.
