Skout Review 2026: Legit or Waste of Money?
The Skout dating app is legit: it is a real, actively updated app run by The Meet Group (the company behind MeetMe and Tagged), with 50M+ downloads on Google Play, and you can chat with people nearby for free. Paying is mostly a waste of money for dating, though: Premium ($9.99 a month on the US App Store) buys visibility and incognito, not better matches, and Points only buy gifts for livestreamers. Use it free for casual chat; pick a dating-first app if you want real dates.
What is the Skout dating app, and who runs it?
Skout started in 2007 as a mobile social network, founded in San Francisco by Christian Wiklund and Niklas Lindstrom, and pivoted to dating and people discovery in 2009, according to Wikipedia’s Skout page. Today the terms of service are a contract with The Meet Group, Inc., of New Hope, Pennsylvania, the same company that runs MeetMe and Tagged, and the Google Play developer contact points to its parent, ParshipMeet.
The Skout homepage sums up the product as “your network for friendship, love and livestreaming”. The store listings are titled “Meet, Chat, Go Live”. That order is honest: Skout is a social discovery app with livestreams, and dating is something people do on it, not what it is built around.
Who it is for (and who should skip it)
- Good fit: adults who want free, casual chat with people nearby or around the world, new friends, or a low-pressure date, and people who like watching or hosting live video.
- Poor fit: anyone who wants a serious relationship, detailed profiles or interest-based search. A 2023 Google Play review that hundreds of users marked helpful says you cannot search by shared interests, only by location and who is online.
- Hookups: the Reddit threads ranking for Skout talk about it as a place for “quick meets”. If that is your goal, my hookup dating sites ranking compares options with clearer rules and better safety tools.
- Not for: under-18s. The terms require you to be 18, the App Store rates it 18+ and the community guidelines say “Skout is intended for adults only”.
How Skout works
You sign up in the iPhone or Android app or on skout.com. The help center describes three main things to do:
- Near You: browse people close to you, filtered by preference and distance, and message them. The store description also promises people “around the world”, which is why so many Skout chats are long-distance.
- Match game: a swipe-style game where you like or pass on profiles; Premium lets you undo swipes and see who liked you.
- Live: watch or broadcast livestreams, send gifts, join “battles” and play Next Date, a dating game inside a stream where viewers queue to join the host’s “date box” and can move to a 1:1 video chat.
You can also see who viewed your profile under My Likes, Views, save favorites and get updates from nearby users. Messages arrive as “icebreakers”; a December 2024 Google Play review complains that this view shows age but not location, so you open profiles just to check distance. Skout also does not keep old chats forever, so save anything you want to keep.
Is Skout free? What you get without paying
Yes. The homepage says you can “chat for free with people in your area”, and a free account can build a profile, browse Near You, play the match game, message, see who viewed you, and watch or host Live. What you pay for is visibility and convenience:
| Feature | Free | Skout Premium |
|---|---|---|
| Profile, browse Near You, match game | Yes | Yes |
| Chat with people | Yes | Yes |
| Who viewed your profile | Yes | Yes |
| Watch and host Live | Yes | Yes |
| See who likes you | No | Yes |
| Rocket boost (up to 10x more views) | No | Yes |
| Higher visibility (up to 2x likes and views) | No | Yes |
| See new people nearby first, undo swipes | No | Yes |
| Incognito (appear offline, browse anonymously) | No | Yes |
| Ads | Yes | No |
| Photo verification check mark | Free | Free |
Source: Skout’s help center article What do I receive with a Skout Premium subscription?, checked October 2026. The “up to 10x” and “up to 2x” figures are Skout’s own claims. One caveat: a January 2025 Trustpilot review says an update restricted messaging and pushed users to pay, which the help center does not mention.
How much does Skout cost?
Skout does not publish prices on its website, and the store lists items without always naming their length. Here is what the US App Store shows, plus the yearly plan from a storefront that prices in US dollars:
| Item (as named in the store) | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Month Skout Premium | $9.99 | US App Store |
| Premium (length not stated) | $9.99 and $24.99 | US App Store; check the billing period on the payment sheet |
| 12 Months Skout Premium | $69.99 (about $5.83 a month) | App Store, Lebanon storefront (USD); not listed on the US page |
| 200 Points | $1.99 | about $1.00 per 100 Points |
| 500 Points | $4.99 | about $1.00 per 100 |
| 1000 Points | $7.99 | about $0.80 per 100 |
| 1650 Points | $14.99 | about $0.91 per 100 |
| 2800 Points | $24.99 | about $0.89 per 100 |
| 13,000 Points | $99.99 | about $0.77 per 100 |
Prices checked October 2026 on the US App Store listing and the Lebanon App Store listing. On Google Play, in-app items run from $0.99 to $249.99 per item, with no breakdown. A European storefront also lists a 3-month plan.
Two things the price list hides. First, the 1000-Point pack is cheaper per Point than the 1650 and 2800 packs, so bigger is not always better value. Second, if you want Premium for more than a couple of months, the yearly plan works out far cheaper per month than renewing $9.99 every month, but only buy a year if you are sure you will still be using it.
Where your money actually goes: Premium, Points and Diamonds
Skout has two separate ways to spend:
- Premium is the dating-side subscription: likes list, boosts, incognito, no ads.
- Points are a virtual currency to buy gifts for streamers in Skout Live, or send gifts in chats to stand out in someone’s messages.
Gifts turn into Diamonds for the person receiving them, and streamers can convert Diamonds to cash rewards after an ID check. So the big Points packs fund a creator economy, not your love life. If someone you chat with keeps steering you to their stream or asking for gifts, treat it as a sales pitch. The terms add that Points are non-refundable “even if they expire, are revoked or are discontinued”, and that deleting your account forfeits unused Points and subscription time.
The streamer side has its own complaints: on Trustpilot, one reviewer lists six referral cash-outs totaling $1,154 that were held and then refused as “fraudulent referrals”, and another waited a month before being refused. Those are user reports, but if you plan to earn on Skout Live, read the cash-out rules first.
Fake profiles, bots and complaints
On the US App Store, Skout has 4.4 stars from 189K ratings; on Google Play, 4.1 from 1.22M reviews and 50M+ downloads (October 2026). Those averages are decent. Trustpilot tells a different story: a TrustScore of 1.2 from 120 reviews, 89% of them one-star, on a profile the company has not claimed (Skout on Trustpilot, checked October 2026). The complaints repeat across all three:
- Fake profiles and bots: App Store reviews from 2020 and 2022 describe bot profiles and automated messages linking to adult sites; Trustpilot reviewers in 2024 and 2025 say most profiles they saw were fake or far away.
- Spam and solicitation: users being pushed to other chat apps or offered paid services.
- Bans and lockouts: several Trustpilot reviewers say they were banned after reporting others or locked out with no reply from support; a 2023 Google Play review says both of a new user’s emails were blocked before she could even log in.
- Thin crowd: reviewers mention more men than women and fewer active users than in the past.
Skout is not a pay-to-chat trap: you do not need to pay to talk to people, so the fake profiles are not there to sell you messages. They are there for the usual scams, gifts and off-platform hustles, which is why the safety section matters more than the price.
Safety, verification and privacy
Skout has more verification than most apps in its class, but it does not screen people:
- Face-scan verification: if Skout prompts you to verify at login, you must complete a face scan to get back in. Separately, anyone can earn a free blue check mark by scanning their face against their main photo; changing that photo removes the badge. Skout says it may use biometric data for this, after you accept separate terms.
- Moderation: the community guidelines say reports are reviewed with “a combination of automated tools and human moderation”, and that misusing the report button can itself get you sanctioned, which may explain some of the ban complaints.
- No background checks: the terms say, in capitals, “we do not conduct criminal background checks on our users”.
- Reporting and blocking: on a profile, tap the “...” menu, then Report or Block. For messages advertising other sites or asking you to move to another messenger, Skout’s help center says to report them as spam.
- Privacy: the App Store privacy label says purchases, location, identifiers and usage data may be used to track you across other companies’ apps and sites.
- Disputes: the terms send disputes to binding arbitration under Delaware law and waive class actions, and claims must be filed within one year.
Because a check mark only proves someone matches their photo, verify the rest yourself. The FTC’s romance scam guide lists the patterns these reviews describe: someone who lives far away, cannot meet, moves you off the app fast and then asks for money or gift cards. Never send money or gifts to someone you have not met. Ask for a short video call before meeting, meet first in a public place, get there on your own and tell a friend where you are going. If anyone threatens to share your photos unless you pay, do not pay: keep the messages, report the profile and contact the police.
Skout vs MeetMe: which is better?
They are close siblings. Both are run by The Meet Group, both mix nearby chat, a swipe game and livestreams, and their Premium perks read almost word for word the same in the two help centers. The main difference is scale: MeetMe shows 100M+ downloads on its Google Play listing against Skout’s 50M+. If you are in the US and want the bigger pool, MeetMe is the one I would try first (see my MeetMe review); if you specifically want to chat with people abroad, Skout pitches meeting people “around the world” and is just as free to try. The sister app Tagged is the same model again, more social than dating.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Free to chat, browse and see who viewed you.
- Free face-scan check mark, and forced verification on suspicious logins.
- Real, active app: 50M+ Android downloads and updates about every two weeks through 2026.
- Cheap Premium: $9.99 a month, or about $5.83 a month on a yearly plan.
- Live video and Next Date for people who like meeting on camera.
Cons
- Persistent reports of fake profiles, bots and spam.
- Bans and lockouts that users say came without explanation, and slow support.
- No interest-based search, few filters, lots of long-distance contacts.
- Prices hidden behind unlabeled store items; Points non-refundable.
- No background checks, and disputes go to arbitration.
How to cancel Skout Premium, get a refund and delete your account
Skout Premium is billed by Apple or Google, so you cancel there, not in the Skout app. Deleting your account is a separate step and does not cancel the subscription.

- iPhone: Settings, your name, Subscriptions, Skout, Cancel subscription (Skout’s steps, or Apple’s). Deleting the app does not cancel it.
- Android: Play Store, your profile icon, Payments and subscriptions, Subscriptions, Skout, Cancel subscription (Google’s steps).
- Timing: switch off auto-renew at least 24 hours before the period ends. The terms say you cannot cancel the current period itself, so Premium runs until it ends.
- Refunds: subscriptions are generally non-refundable, but the help center gives a 14-day right to withdraw by emailing support@themeetgroup.com, and you can request a refund for a new subscription or unspent Points at support@skout.com with the date, receipt and transaction ID. If you paid through Apple, the terms say Apple handles the refund.
- Delete the account: in the app, Settings, My Account, Delete account, pick a reason, then click the confirmation link Skout emails you (help center). It is permanent, and there is no temporary deactivation.
Skout alternatives
If you want an app that is less scammy and more about dating, the safest bets are the big apps with verification and active moderation. These all have a review here:
- Tinder: the biggest casual-dating pool in the US, with photo verification.
- Bumble: women message first, which cuts down unwanted messages.
- Hinge: prompts and real profiles if you want dates that lead somewhere.
- Happn: also location-based, but built around people you actually crossed paths with.
- MeetMe: Skout’s bigger sibling, if you like the chat-and-livestream format.
How I rate it
My 3 out of 5 is based on public pricing, features, safety tools, app store reputation and value, not on hands-on use. Value for money 2.5 (free chat is real, but Premium only buys visibility and Points go to gifts), safety and verification 3 (face-scan verification and a free check mark, automated and human moderation, but no background checks and many fake-profile reports), evidence of an active user base 3.5 (50M+ Android downloads, 1.22M Google Play reviews, updates every couple of weeks, though reviewers describe fewer real users), features for its audience 3 (nearby chat, match game, Live and Next Date, but weak search and filters), transparency 2 (no price list on the website, unlabeled store items, non-refundable Points, arbitration). Average 2.8, rounded to 3.
Frequently asked questions
Is Skout a free dating site?
Yes. You can create a profile, browse people nearby, play the match game, chat and watch Live for free. Skout Premium ($9.99 a month on the US App Store) adds see who likes you, boosts, incognito and no ads, and Points are only for gifts.
How much does Skout cost?
The US App Store lists 1 Month Skout Premium at $9.99, another Premium item at $24.99, and Points packs from $1.99 for 200 to $99.99 for 13,000. A 12-month plan appears at $69.99 on a US-dollar storefront. On Google Play, in-app items range from $0.99 to $249.99 (checked October 2026).
Is Skout a good dating site?
It is a legit app but a weak dating site. Skout is built around nearby chat and livestreaming, with few filters and no interest search, and its Trustpilot page is dominated by complaints about fake profiles and bans. It works for casual chat; for dating, Tinder, Bumble or Hinge are stronger picks.
What is the Skout app used for?
Skout is used to chat with people nearby or abroad, make friends, flirt and date, and to watch or host livestreams where viewers send paid gifts. Its own homepage calls it a network for friendship, love and livestreaming.
Which is better, Skout or MeetMe?
They are run by the same company, The Meet Group, and work almost the same way, with matching Premium perks. MeetMe has the bigger user base, with 100M+ Google Play downloads against Skout's 50M+, so it is usually the better first try in the US.
Which dating app is the least scammy?
No app is scam-free. Apps with photo verification and active moderation, like Bumble, Hinge and Tinder, are safer bets than open chat apps. On any app, be wary of anyone who cannot meet, moves you off the app quickly or asks for money or gifts.
