Best Free Dating Sites That Are Really Free (2026)

The free dating sites worth your time in 2026 are the ones that let you message without paying: Facebook Dating and Mingle2 are free all the way through, while OkCupid, Plenty of Fish, Hinge, Tinder and Bumble are free to match and chat with optional upgrades. Pick Hinge or OkCupid for a relationship, Tinder or MeetMe for casual chat, and skip any app that charges coins per message.

This hub explains the three kinds of “free” you will meet, ranks the options by what the free tier really unlocks (checked on each app’s official Google Play listing in October 2026), and links every free-tier review I have published. The full list of those reviews sits at the bottom of the page.

The best free dating sites at a glance

Ratings are out of 5 and come from my reviews of each app, linked in the table. Facebook Dating has no review yet, so it has no rating. Store scores are from Google Play, checked October 2026.

Free features from each app’s Google Play listing: Mingle2, OkCupid, Plenty of Fish, Hinge, Tinder, Bumble, MeetMe, Badoo and Tagged. Checked October 2026. None of these apps publishes one fixed US price on the listing, which is why the table shows features rather than dollars: the price appears in the app before you pay.

Really free, freemium or pay-to-chat: how to tell

Almost every site in this search calls itself free. Mingle2’s city pages say “100% free”, FriendFin promises “no hidden costs”, and even paid services put a “Join free” button on the homepage. Behind the word, there are three different business models, and only two of them are worth your time.

  • Really free, paid by ads. You can match, search and message without paying anything. Mingle2’s listing says its core features stay “100% free”, including matching, chatting and search filters, and that ads pay for it. Facebook Dating lives inside the free Facebook app: Meta’s launch announcement describes an opt-in Dating profile, separate from your main profile, for users 18 and older, with no subscription mentioned.
  • Freemium. Matching and messaging your matches are free, and a subscription removes limits: more likes, seeing who liked you, filters, travel modes. Tinder, Hinge, Bumble, OkCupid, Plenty of Fish and Badoo all work this way. You can date on the free tier; you just move more slowly.
  • Pay-to-chat. The download is free and the first messages are free, then every message costs coins or credits. Chaty’s own Google Play listing says it offers “in-app-purchases for chat messages after your free messages are consumed”. Some apps add AI characters on top: Lovely’s help center says its AI profiles have “no real person behind” them and that free users need a Plus subscription to keep chatting with them.

Run any new app through these three questions before you spend a cent:

Decision flow: if you cannot message a match free, or messages cost coins, or some profiles are AI, the app is not really free

That is why my Chaty review (2 out of 5), Lovely review (2.5) and iHappy review (2.5) sit at the bottom of this hub. iHappy is free to like, match and chat, but its listing shows both ads and in-app purchases, and the review explains the fake-profile complaints behind its low score.

Best free dating sites, by what you want

Completely free: Facebook Dating and Mingle2

If “free” means you never see a paywall, these are the two. Facebook Dating has the advantage of a pool of people who already have Facebook accounts, and you set it up inside the Facebook app on your phone. Mingle2 is a free site and app run since 2006 that lets you message without matching first. Its help center sets one rule worth knowing: members without a profile photo can only message 3 people a day. The catch is the crowd. The Mingle2 review covers the scam warnings its own Safety Hub publishes and why the pool is international rather than local.

Best free tier for a relationship: OkCupid and Hinge

OkCupid is the freemium app that gives you the most for nothing: a detailed profile, compatibility questions, a match percentage and chat with your matches. Premium adds seeing who likes you, unlimited likes and Dealbreakers. Hinge has the highest rating in this table (4.5) and it is free to like, comment and chat. Its listing says you upgrade to Hinge+ to “see everyone who likes” you or “send unlimited likes”, so free users get a daily cap on likes. For a full ranking of paid and free options, see my serious dating apps page.

Free chat without paying: MeetMe, Plenty of Fish and Tagged

This answers the most common question in this search, “what dating sites offer free chat without paying?”. MeetMe’s listing says “messaging is always free and unlimited”, with text and video chat, though the app today is built around livestreams and gifts (see my MeetMe review). Plenty of Fish gives you unlimited messaging once you match, plus one “First Contact” a day to message someone before a match. Tagged, from the same company as MeetMe, is free to swipe and chat but behaves more like a social app than a dating app, as my Tagged review explains.

Is Plenty of Fish still free? Yes. Its October 2026 listing describes a free download with unlimited messaging between matches, Selfie Verification and Share My Date, with in-app purchases for extras. The Plenty of Fish review breaks down what the paid features add.

Best for casual dating: Tinder, Bumble and Badoo

Tinder is free to swipe and chat with matches; Plus, Gold and Platinum add unlimited likes, Passport, seeing who liked you and priority. Bumble is free too, and its listing puts ID Verification and video chat among the free features. Badoo says outright that “Badoo is free”, with Premium for unlimited likes, filters and invisible mode, and adds that prices vary by country and show in the app. For apps built around casual dating, my hookup dating sites ranking goes further.

Free dating sites for seniors

Is there a 100% free dating site for seniors? Not one built only for seniors that I can recommend. The fully free options work at any age: Facebook Dating, and Mingle2, whose app has a LifeAfter55 community room. Which dating app is best for older people? If you are willing to pay, my senior dating sites page ranks them, starting with OurTime (3.5) for daters over 50. What are the complaints about SilverSingles? The big one to know before you join is in its own footer: the SilverSingles site says it “does not conduct background checks” on members. The rest, from cost to who is on it, is in my SilverSingles review.

When is it worth paying instead?

Paying helps a little, not a lot. In Pew Research Center’s survey of 6,034 US adults (July 2022), 35% of online daters had ever paid for a dating site or app, and 58% of paying users called their experience positive, against half of those who never paid. The gap is real but small, and it is smaller than the gap between an app whose pool suits you and one whose pool does not.

My rule, if you are wondering what the best dating app is for you:

  • You want a relationship: start free on Hinge or OkCupid. Pay for one month only if the people you like are there and the like limit is the thing slowing you down.
  • You want casual dates: stay free on Tinder or Bumble; subscriptions mostly buy speed.
  • You want to chat and see where it goes: MeetMe, Mingle2 or Plenty of Fish, all free to message.
  • You are 50 or older and want a calmer pool: try Facebook Dating free first, then a paid senior site.
  • An app asks for coins to keep a conversation going: leave.

If you do pay, every one of these subscriptions auto-renews. Tinder’s and Hinge’s listings both say renewal happens automatically unless you turn it off, and Mingle2’s help center warns you to cancel MinglePlus before closing your account or you “may be auto-charged”. Turn off auto-renewal the day you subscribe.

How to choose a free dating site

Beyond price, four things decide whether a free site works for you:

  • Who is on it near you. A huge global pool means little if your matches live in another country. My Badoo and iHappy reviews both flag far-away profiles as a common complaint.
  • How you meet people. Swipe-and-match (Tinder, Bumble, Badoo), prompts and questions (Hinge, OkCupid) or open messaging (Mingle2, MeetMe). Open messaging is friendlier for chat, and noisier for spam.
  • Search filters on the free tier. Mingle2 keeps age, interests, ethnicity and location filters free; on Bumble and Badoo the advanced filters are paid.
  • Safety tools. Free photo or selfie verification (Badoo, Plenty of Fish, Hinge), free ID verification (Bumble), blocking and reporting everywhere.

Free apps attract scammers: stay safe

A free sign-up is free for scammers too. In the same Pew survey, 52% of online daters said they had come across someone they believed was trying to scam them. The FTC’s romance scam guide lists the signs: someone who wants to move off the app fast, declares strong feelings quickly, always has a reason not to meet, then needs money for medical bills, travel or visa fees, or offers to help you invest in crypto. They ask to be paid by wire transfer, gift card, payment app or cryptocurrency.

  • Never send money or gift cards to someone you have not met in person.
  • Prefer matches with a verified badge, and ask for a short video call before meeting.
  • Meet in a public place, keep the first date short and easy to leave, and tell a friend where you are going.
  • Run a reverse image search on photos that look too polished.
  • Report the profile in the app and at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

How I rank free dating sites

These rankings come from public information, not from paying for each app: the official Google Play listings and help centers (what is free, what is paid, how renewal works), app store ratings and reviews, safety and verification tools, and who each app is built for. Where I have a review, the table keeps its rating. Every free-tier review I publish is listed below this page as it goes live, and the full A to Z of reviews is on the reviews hub.
