Chaty Review 2026: Legit or Waste of Money?
Chaty is a real app, not a fake listing, but for most people it is a waste of money. The Chaty dating app (on Google Play as “Chaty - Chat & Make Friends”) is a chat-with-strangers messenger where you pay per message once a few free coins run out, and its own terms say verified users can earn real money for chatting with you. Use it for a few free messages if you are curious; do not buy coin packs hoping for a date.
What is Chaty, and who runs it?
Chaty describes itself as “your fun and lite way to get in touch with interesting people”: a simple messenger to discover people nearby, send direct messages, photos and GIFs, and join local chatrooms. Its homepage and Google Play listing never call it a dating app. It is sold as a way to “make new friends” and talk “about love, sports, music or your favorite series”. People search for it as a dating app because that is how it gets used: strangers, photos, private chat.
The Chaty terms of service (last revised June 22, 2026) say the app is operated by Mobile Investment GmbH in Cologne, Germany, and Google Play lists the same company and address as the developer. The site’s imprint page, however, says the service is the property of Apptain GmbH, also in Cologne. Both are German companies; the site does not explain how they relate. The Android app launched in July 2021 and was last updated May 4, 2026, so it is maintained.
Who Chaty is for (and who should skip it)
- Could suit: adults who want a quick, low-effort way to text strangers, do not care about matching, and are fine spending a few dollars on chat like a game.
- Should skip it: anyone looking for a relationship or local dates, anyone on a budget, and anyone who dislikes paying per message. There are no compatibility questions, no swipe-and-match and no dating filters described anywhere in its listing.
- Not for: anyone under 18. The terms require users to be at least 18, and the privacy policy asks members to report anyone who seems younger. Google Play rates it Mature 17+, with “Users Interact” and “Shares Location”; the terms are the rule that counts.
How Chaty works: no matching, just chat
From the listing and homepage, the flow is simple. You pick a nickname, add a selfie and gallery photos, then browse people around you and message whoever you like. There is “no complicated sign-up” and, Chaty says, no requirement for personal information. Messages arrive like SMS, offline users get a notification, and you can share pictures and GIFs. The website adds local chatrooms for group conversation.
Distance is a weak point. A September 2022 Google Play review complained that people shown were “several states away”; the developer replied that nearby users are placed at the top of the discovery page. If you want people in your own city, an app built for dating does that better.
Is Chaty free? What the Chaty dating app actually costs
It is free to download, and your first messages are free. After that you buy credits. Chaty’s own listing says it offers “in-app-purchases for chat messages after your free messages are consumed”. It does not publish a price list on its website, in its terms or in the store description, so you only see coin prices inside the app.
| What | What the sources say | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Download and sign-up | Free | Google Play listing |
| First messages | Free, then paid credits | Google Play description |
| In-app purchases (US) | $3.99 to $359.99 per item | Google Play listing |
| Cost per message | Not published. A December 2022 reviewer reported 18 starter coins, 6 coins per message and about $5 for fewer than 10 messages; Chaty’s reply confirmed it charges per message | Google Play reviews |
| Refunds on coins | “Final and non-refundable” | Terms, section 11 |
Prices checked October 2026 on the Chaty Google Play listing. The per-message figures are one user’s report from 2022, not an official rate, and may have changed.
Do the math on that reported rate: at roughly 50 cents a message, a normal back-and-forth of 40 texts costs about $20, for one conversation, with someone you cannot verify. Dating apps with free messaging exist; you do not need to pay per text.
The clause that matters: some users are paid to chat
This is the part no one mentions. Section 13 of the Chaty terms, “Verified Accounts”, says that once an account is verified (government ID, a profile photo, signed in within the last 4 weeks), the user “will earn Virtual Items for your activity and interaction with other users which you can redeem for ‘real world’ money once you reach a certain threshold.”
Put that next to the pricing. You pay for every message you send. A verified user on the other side can earn money from the interaction. Chaty does not say how much they earn, what counts as “interaction”, or whether the people messaging you first are verified earners. None of that makes them fake, and ID verification does mean a real person passed a check. But it gives some members a financial reason to keep you typing, which is the opposite of what you want from a place to meet someone.
So when a conversation is warm, flattering and never moves toward a phone call or a coffee, assume the meter is running on both sides.
Red flags in the fine print
- “No advertising” vs ads: the homepage promises “No advertising, no data brokering”. Google Play labels the app “Contains ads”, and the terms say Chaty and “third-party partners may place advertising on the Service”.
- “No data shared” vs advertising partners: the Google Play data safety page says no data is shared with third parties, while the privacy policy says it may share limited information “in hashed, non-human readable form to advertising partners”. Both may be technically true under Google’s definitions, but they do not read the same.
- Two company names: Mobile Investment GmbH in the terms and on Google Play, Apptain GmbH in the imprint.
- Disputes go to Germany: the terms apply German law, with Cologne as the venue, and cap some liability at 1,000 euros.
Is Chaty legit or a scam?
Chaty is legit in the narrow sense: a registered German company, a maintained app with 500K+ downloads on Google Play, published terms, a privacy policy and a support address. I found no evidence that it is a fake app that takes money and delivers nothing.
Whether it is worth money is a different question, and the answer is no for anyone who wants to date. You pay per message, coins are non-refundable, there is no matching, and the terms reward verified users for interaction. That combination is why it gets my warning label.
Google Play rating and complaints
On Google Play, Chaty has 3.8 stars from 6.02K reviews and 500K+ downloads (October 2026). The most helpful reviews shown on the listing are complaints:
- Pay per message (December 2022, marked helpful by 570 people): the reviewer called it “a money burner”, said the first message was not always free, and added that “half the accounts get banned within 30 min”. Chaty replied that it charges per message to stay ad-free and finance development.
- Pricing out users (September 2022): “No one can afford to keep paying for every single message”, plus the distance problem above.
- Payment errors (August 2023): purchases flagged as fraud and repeated card prompts; Chaty said payments are handled by Google.
Those are individual reports, and the overall score is middling rather than terrible. But the pattern is consistent: the complaints are about money, not bugs.
Where to get it: Android and web, no US iPhone app
Chaty is on Google Play, and the website has a sign-in for the web version. When I searched the US App Store in October 2026, I found no Chaty app from Mobile Investment GmbH or Apptain GmbH; the apps named “Chaty” there come from other developers and are not the same product. If a “Chaty” iPhone app asks you for money, check the developer name first.
Safety, privacy and verification
- Moderation: Chaty says it monitors activity “automatically and manually”, blocks offending pictures and bans offenders.
- Reporting: long-press a message, image or profile to report it, or email support. Support says it usually answers within a few hours, Monday to Friday business hours.
- Verification: optional ID verification exists, but in the terms it is tied to earning money, not to a badge that protects you. Chaty states that it does not run criminal background checks on users.
- Data: the data safety page lists photos, purchase history, approximate location, device IDs, optional name and email, and in-app messages. Data is encrypted in transit, and you can ask for deletion.
- Money: the terms tell you not to share card or bank details or send money to other users. Follow that literally: no gift cards, no crypto, no “help with a bill”.
Before meeting anyone from a chat app: do a video call first, meet in a public place, tell a friend where you are, and report anyone who asks for money or pushes you to another app fast.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Real company, maintained app, published terms and privacy policy
- Quick sign-up with only a nickname and photo
- Report tools and stated human moderation
- Some free messages to try it
Cons
- Pay per message, with no public price list
- Coin purchases are final and non-refundable
- Verified users can earn money from chatting with you
- No matching or dating features; distance results criticized
- Mixed messages on ads and data sharing; two company names
- No iPhone app in the US
How to cancel and delete Chaty
- Spend or write off your coins. The terms say unused virtual items are not refunded when an account closes.
- Cancel any subscription in Google Play (Payments & subscriptions). The terms say deleting the app or your account does not cancel a store subscription.
- Delete the account in the app’s settings. The privacy policy says data is deleted or anonymized after that, except what the law requires it to keep (some traffic data for one year).
For a refund on a Google Play purchase, the terms ask you to email Chaty support with your Google Play order number; refunds are at its discretion outside the EU.
Chaty alternatives
If you came for free chat with new people, these have live reviews on the site:
- Tagged and MeetMe: big social apps for chatting with people nearby, with live video.
- Badoo: a free-to-start app that mixes social discovery and dating.
- Skout: chat with people nearby, more casual.
If you actually want dates, use an app built for matching. My Hinge review, Tinder review, Bumble review and OkCupid review cover the big apps and what their free tiers let you do. For something serious, start with my list of serious dating apps; for casual, hookup dating sites.
How I rate it
My 2 out of 5 is based on public information, not hands-on use: Chaty’s Google Play listing and data safety page, its website, terms of service and privacy policy, all checked October 2026. I scored five things from 1 to 5: value for money 1.5 (pay per message, non-refundable coins), safety and verification 2 (reporting and moderation, but no background checks and verification tied to earnings), evidence of an active user base 2.5 (500K+ downloads, updated in 2026, about 6,000 reviews), features for daters 2 (chat only, no matching) and transparency 1.5 (no price list, contradictory ad and data statements, two company names). The average rounds to 2.
Frequently asked questions

Chaty is a real app run by a German company, with 500K+ downloads and 3.8 stars on Google Play (October 2026). What is the Chaty app used for?

How much does Chaty cost?
It is free to download and the first messages are free, then you buy credits. Google Play lists in-app purchases from $3.99 to $359.99 per item (October 2026). Chaty does not publish a per-message price; one 2022 reviewer reported 6 coins per message and about $5 for fewer than 10 messages.
Is Chaty the same as GoChatty?
No. GoChatty is a different service with a similar name, and this review does not cover its prices. Chaty is the Android app called Chaty - Chat & Make Friends, from Mobile Investment GmbH in Cologne.
What is the best free chat dating app?
If you want to chat with new people for free, social apps like Tagged, MeetMe or Badoo let you start without paying per message. If you want actual dates, a matching app like Hinge, Bumble or OkCupid is a better use of your time than a pay-per-message messenger.
