MeetMe Review 2026: Legit or Waste of Money?
MeetMe is legit: it is a real app run by The Meet Group since 2005, with 100M+ downloads on Google Play, and you can browse, match and message for free. For MeetMe online dating, though, paying is mostly a waste of money, because today the app is built around livestreams, gifts and Credits more than around finding a partner. Use it free as a casual way to chat with people nearby, and pick a dating-first app if you want a relationship.
What is MeetMe, and who runs it?
MeetMe started in 2005 as myYearbook, a social network, and took the MeetMe name in June 2012 after merging with Quepasa, according to Wikipedia’s page on The Meet Group. In 2020 The Meet Group was bought by ProSiebenSat.1 and folded into ParshipMeet Group, the same parent as eharmony. The Meet Group’s site still describes itself as “a subsidiary of ParshipMeet Group”, and the company also runs Skout, Tagged and Growlr, per MeetMe’s Online Safety Code page.
The MeetMe homepage sums up the product today: “Start chatting and streaming with people nearby.” The store listings call it “MeetMe: Go Live & Meet People”. That matters for your expectations: this is a social discovery and livestreaming app that allows dating, not a matchmaking service.
Who it is for (and who should skip it)
- Good fit: adults who want free, low-pressure chat with people nearby, new friends, or a casual date, and people who enjoy live video, either watching or streaming.
- Poor fit: anyone looking for a long-term relationship with compatibility matching, detailed profiles or strong filters. My serious dating apps ranking is a better place to start for that.
- Not for: under-18s. MeetMe’s terms require you to be at least 18, and its community guidelines say it uses age checks by face scan or government ID.
How MeetMe works: finding people, matching and messaging
MeetMe’s help center lists three main ways to meet people on the app:
- Near You: browse profiles of members close to you and message them directly.
- Meet (the match game): a swipe-style game, like Tinder’s, where you like or pass on profiles. Premium lets you undo swipes and rediscover likes you gave.
- Live: watch or broadcast livestreams, join a stream as a guest, send gifts and take part in “battles”. There is even a dating game inside streams, Next Date, where viewers queue up to join a host’s “date box” and can move to a 1:1 video chat if it goes well.
Messaging is the strong point. The Google Play listing says messaging “is always free and unlimited”, with text and video chat. You do not need a mutual match to send a first message, which is great for starting conversations and also explains why inboxes fill with spam (more on that below).
One thing MeetMe does not offer: a way to look up a specific person. You find people through Near You, the match game and Live, and that is by design.
Is MeetMe free? What you get without paying
Yes. A free account can build a profile, browse Near You, play the match game, message without limits, video chat and watch Live. What you pay for is visibility and convenience:
| Feature | Free | MeetMe Premium |
|---|---|---|
| Profile, browse, match game | Yes | Yes |
| Messages and video chat | Unlimited | Unlimited |
| Watch and host Live streams | Yes | Yes |
| See who likes you (unblurred) | No | Yes |
| Rocket boost (up to 10x more views) | No | Yes |
| Higher visibility (up to 2x likes and views) | No | Yes |
| Discover new people first, undo swipes | No | Yes |
| Incognito mode | No | Yes |
| Ads | Yes | No |
| Photo verification check mark | Free | Free |

How much does MeetMe cost?
MeetMe does not publish a price list on its website. Its terms say subscriptions come in packages “such as one-month, three-month, or six-month”. The best public price source is the App Store’s in-app purchase list:
| Item (as named on the App Store) | Price |
|---|---|
| MeetMe+ (length not stated) | $7.99 |
| MeetMe (length not stated) | $7.99 and $17.99 |
| MeetMe Premium (length not stated) | $9.99 |
| Pack of 200 Credits | $1.99 |
| Pack of 500 Credits | $1.99 or $4.99 |
| Pack of 1650 Credits | $14.99 |
| Pack of 2800 Credits | $24.99 |
| Pack of 13000 Credits | $99.99 |
Prices checked October 2026 on the MeetMe App Store listing. On Google Play, in-app items run from $0.99 to $249.99 per item, with no breakdown.
Before you subscribe: the plan length is not shown in the store list, so read the billing period on the payment sheet. Subscriptions renew automatically for the same length unless you switch auto-renew off at least 24 hours before the period ends. And if you delete your account, you lose any unused subscription time and Credits without a refund.
Where your money actually goes: Premium, Credits and Diamonds
This is the part most people miss about MeetMe in 2026. There are two separate ways to spend:
- Premium is the dating-side subscription: visibility, likes list, incognito, no ads.
- Credits are a virtual currency you buy to send gifts to streamers in MeetMe Live, or gifts in chats to stand out in someone’s messages.
Gifts turn into Diamonds for the person who receives them, and streamers can convert Diamonds into cash rewards after an ID check. In other words, the biggest packs ($99.99, up to $249.99 on Google Play) pay for a creator economy, not for better matches. If someone you chat with keeps asking you to send gifts or join their stream, treat it like any other request for money.
Safety and verification on MeetMe
- Face scan when prompted: MeetMe may ask you to verify your account at login with a face scan, and you cannot use the account until you do. The aim is to confirm users are real people.
- Optional check mark: a second face scan, matched against your main photo, adds a blue check mark. Change the photo and the check mark disappears until you verify again. The Meet Group launched this badge in September 2020 with FaceTec’s 3D liveness technology, which also estimates age to flag underage accounts.
- Biometrics: when a check uses biometric data, MeetMe says you will be asked to accept separate Biometric Terms first.
- Report and block: tap the “...” menu at the top of a profile, or scroll to the bottom, and choose Report or Block. In Live, tap the “!” icon. MeetMe says reports are reviewed by a mix of automated tools and human moderators.
- Data: on the App Store privacy label, purchases, location, identifiers and usage data are listed as used to track you.
MeetMe’s help center warns about two specific traps. First, spam messages that advertise another site or ask you to move to a third-party messenger: report them as spam. Second, phishing: fake login pages that look like MeetMe and steal your password. Only log in from meetme.com or the app, and never re-enter your password on a page you were sent to.
The usual rules apply on top: never send money, gift cards or crypto to someone you met online, check a match’s check mark before meeting, meet in a public place, and tell a friend where you are going.
Fake profiles, scams and complaints
On the App Store, MeetMe has 4.3 out of 5 from 374K ratings, rated 18+. On Google Play, it has 4.0 from 1.64M reviews and 100M+ downloads, rated Mature 17+ (October 2026). Those averages are fine for a free social app. The recent written reviews on the App Store are harsher, and they repeat the same themes: crashes, purchases or Diamonds that went missing, slow customer support and hacked accounts.
The search results for this keyword tell the same story from the dating side: TikTok and YouTube “horror stories”, a Reddit thread complaining about pushy notifications, and an older user review saying the free app attracts people who are not there to date. That fits the design. Free, unlimited messages without a match mean anyone can message you, including spammers and people pushing you off the app. It is not a pay-to-chat trap (the messages are free), but you will need to filter your own inbox.
Is anyone still using MeetMe?
Yes. The app is actively maintained: Google Play shows an update on September 25, 2026, and the App Store listed a new version, 236.0, in early October 2026. The 100M+ downloads count everyone since 2010, though, and MeetMe publishes no current US active-user figure. A lot of the daily activity now happens in Live, among streamers and viewers, so how many dating-minded singles you see depends on your area.
MeetMe vs Tinder and Plenty of Fish
- MeetMe vs Tinder: both have a swipe game and are free to start. Tinder only lets you chat after a mutual match, which keeps inboxes cleaner; MeetMe lets anyone message you. Tinder is the better dating app; MeetMe is more of a social and livestream app.
- MeetMe vs Plenty of Fish: both offer free messaging and a large, casual user base. POF has more dating-focused profiles and filters, and it scored 3.5 out of 5 in my POF review. If you want a free app that is still about dating, POF is the closer fit.

Pros and cons
Pros
- Free and unlimited messaging and video chat, no match required.
- Real, long-running company (since 2005), part of the group that owns eharmony.
- Face scan checks at login, optional photo check mark, age verification.
- Live video and Next Date for people who like meeting on camera.
- Clear help center steps to cancel, ask for a refund and delete your account.
Cons
- A livestream and gifting app first; dating is a side feature.
- Open inboxes attract spam, people pushing other apps, and phishing.
- No public price list and unlabeled plan lengths in the store.
- Credits and gifts can add up fast, up to $249.99 per item on Google Play.
- Recent reviews mention crashes, lost purchases and slow support; no temporary pause option.
How to cancel, get a refund and delete your account
You pay through Apple or Google, so that is where you cancel. Uninstalling the app does nothing: your account stays, and MeetMe does not offer a temporary deactivation.

- Cancel the subscription. On iPhone: Settings, your name, Subscriptions, MeetMe, Cancel Subscription. On Android: Google Play, your profile icon, Payments and subscriptions, Subscriptions, MeetMe, Cancel subscription. Do it at least 24 hours before the period ends (MeetMe’s cancel guide). The same page mentions a right to withdraw within 14 days of buying, by email to support@themeetgroup.com.
- Ask for a refund if needed. For unspent Credits or a new Premium subscription, email support@meetme.com with the purchase date, your receipt (Apple, Google Play or PayPal) and the transaction ID. MeetMe reviews each request; a refund is not guaranteed.
- Delete the account. In the app, go to Settings, My Account, Delete account, pick a reason, review the data that will be removed and confirm. Then click the link in the confirmation email. Deletion is permanent, and unused Credits and subscription time are lost.
If the notifications are the problem rather than the app, turn them off in your phone’s settings for MeetMe before deciding to delete.
MeetMe alternatives
- Plenty of Fish: another free-messaging app, but focused on dating.
- OkCupid: free, with detailed profiles and question-based matching.
- Tinder: the biggest swipe app, chat only after a match.
- Bumble: women message first, which cuts down unwanted messages.
- Hinge: the pick if you want a relationship.

How I rate it
My 3 out of 5 is based on public pricing, features, safety tools, app store reputation and value, not on hands-on use. Value for money 3 (unlimited free messaging, but Premium adds little for dating and Credits packs go to gifts), safety and verification 3.5 (face scans at login, optional check mark, age checks, report and block, but open inboxes draw spam and phishing), evidence of an active user base 3.5 (100M+ downloads, 1.64M Google Play reviews, frequent updates, but no US active-user figure and much of the activity is in Live), features for its audience 2.5 (good for casual chat and live video, thin for dating: few filters and lightweight profiles), transparency 3 (clear cancel, refund and deletion steps and a 14-day withdrawal right, but no price list and unlabeled plan lengths). Average 3.1, rounded to 3.
Frequently asked questions
Is MeetMe a good dating site?
MeetMe is a legit app with free, unlimited messaging, but it is built around livestreams and social chat more than dating. It works for casual chat and meeting people nearby. If you want a relationship, a dating-first app like Hinge or OkCupid is a better bet.
Is MeetMe a free dating app?
Yes. You can create a profile, browse people near you, play the match game, message and video chat without paying. Premium adds visibility, a list of who likes you, incognito mode and no ads, and Credits are bought separately to send gifts.
Is MeetMe like Tinder?
Partly. MeetMe has a swipe-style match game like Tinder, but anyone can message you without a mutual match, and much of the app is about live video streams. Tinder is more focused on dating and keeps chat behind a match.
Does anyone use MeetMe anymore?
Yes. The app has 100M+ downloads and 1.64M reviews on Google Play and was updated in September and October 2026. MeetMe does not publish a current US active-user number, and a lot of the activity is now in its Live streaming section.
How do I find someone on MeetMe?
You meet people through the Near You section, the swipe-style Meet game and Live streams. MeetMe has no tool to look up a specific person, which is by design. Premium makes your own profile more visible and shows who already liked you.
How do I cancel MeetMe Premium?
Cancel in your Apple or Google Play subscription settings at least 24 hours before the period ends. Deleting the app does not cancel anything. For a refund, email support@meetme.com with your receipt and transaction ID.
