Best Free Dating Sites for Over 50 in 2026 (Really Free)
The best free dating site for over 50 is Facebook Dating if you want something that is free all the way through: Meta charges nothing for it, and it sits inside the Facebook app you may already use. If you want a bigger pool of people your age, OkCupid and Plenty of Fish let you message your matches without paying, OurTime gives 50+ singles free chat once you match, and eharmony’s free Basic membership is the best no-cost way to try a marriage-minded site.
Most “free” senior sites are free to join and paid to talk. Below, each pick says exactly what a free member can do, according to the company’s own help center, pricing page or store listing, what the upgrade costs if you want it, and how to stay safe on the free side, where most of the fake profiles are. For the paid ranking, see my best dating apps over 50 list.

What “free” really means on a dating site
“Free” covers four very different deals, and the difference is who can start a conversation. On a fully free app, nothing is locked. On freemium apps you can chat once you match, you just get fewer likes or filters. Some serious sites give you limited messages. And several senior sites only let a free member reply to someone who has paid. Here is where each pick falls, sorted from its own help center, pricing page or store listing.

If you only remember one thing: on a reply-only site, a free profile works if other members are paying and writing to you. That suits some women on senior sites, and frustrates most men. When you want to start conversations yourself without paying, stick to the first two columns.
1. Facebook Dating: the only 100% free option
Facebook Dating is a separate dating profile inside the Facebook app. Meta describes it as “a free dating experience within the Facebook app” and says it wants people to meet “without having to resort to endless swiping or paying to unlock product features” (Meta, September 2025). There is no subscription to buy.
Two details matter after 50. First, you must be 18 or older, your dating profile is separate from your main profile, Facebook Dating does not suggest your Facebook friends unless you both add each other to Secret Crush, and your dating activity is not shared to the rest of Facebook. Second, Meta’s launch announcement says messages cannot contain photos, links, payments or videos. That blocks two common scam moves: unsolicited photos and payment requests inside the chat.
Who it suits: anyone already on Facebook who wants zero cost. The catch: Meta’s own growth numbers are about young adults, so a busy 50+ crowd near you is not guaranteed, and you need the Facebook app on your phone. Set your age range and see who shows up. Visit Facebook Dating.
2. OkCupid: best free messaging with real matching
OkCupid matches you through questions and shows a match percentage, which gives you something real to talk about. Its App Store listing calls it a free dating app, and the paid Premium adds seeing who likes you, unlimited likes and dealbreaker filters. Premium items are listed from $7.99 to $59.99 (lengths not shown), with 4.3 stars from 289K ratings (October 2026).
In my OkCupid review I found the free tier genuinely usable: you can search, view full profiles, like and message without hitting a paywall. The same review flags the downside of an open door: some fake profiles in the free pool. On Google Play it has 50M+ downloads and 3.4 stars from 688K reviews.
Who it suits: people who want depth before a date and do not want to pay for it. The catch: a younger average user than senior sites, so expect to widen your distance. Visit OkCupid.
3. Plenty of Fish: best big pool with free chat
Plenty of Fish has a senior dating page titled “Date, chat and match for free”. Its Google Play listing spells out the rules: when you match in Meet Me, you get unlimited messaging with each other, and you can send one First Contact a day to someone you have not matched with. The same listing describes Selfie Verification and Share My Date, which sends your date details to friends or family.
Paid options exist but are optional: the App Store listing shows a 1 Week Subscription at $19.99 and a 1 Month Subscription at $29.99 (October 2026). In my Plenty of Fish review I rate it 3.5: big, free and busy, but you have to filter hard.
Who it suits: people outside big cities who need the numbers. The catch: a mixed crowd of ages and intentions. Visit Plenty of Fish.
4. OurTime: best free option only for people over 50
OurTime is Match Group’s site for singles over 50, and its free side is more generous than most senior sites. According to its App Store listing, a free member can build a profile, search, get curated daily matches, like profiles and chat after matching. Premium adds seeing who liked you, read receipts, a profile boost and Super Likes. The listing also mentions profile moderation and fraud detection.
If you upgrade, it costs $19.99 for a week of Premium, $39.99 for a month or $89.99 for six months (October 2026, 3.9 stars from 70K ratings). My OurTime review covers the site in detail.
Who it suits: anyone who only wants to see people their own age and is happy to wait for a mutual like. The catch: SeniorLiving and others report complaints about fake profiles, so use the safety habits below. Visit OurTime.
5. eharmony: best free trial of a serious site
eharmony does not sell a free trial; it has a free membership that does not expire. Its cost page says Basic is free with no time limit: you take the Compatibility Quiz, browse your matches, send Likes and a first message, and messaging is limited rather than blocked. Premium adds unlimited messaging, all photos, who viewed you and your Personality Profile, on 3, 6 or 12 month plans.
Some rankings say free eharmony members cannot message at all. The company’s own page says otherwise, so you can test whether your matches reply before you pay. What it does not publish is the price: it appears only after you log in and click upgrade. My eharmony review walks through the free and paid sides.
Who it suits: divorced or widowed daters who want commitment and do not mind a long quiz. The catch: paid plans are long, and you only see the price after signing up. Visit eharmony.
6. SeniorMatch: best verification on a free account
SeniorMatch only takes members over 50 and is upfront about its free limits. Its help center says a free (Standard) member can create a profile, add photos, search by country and state, and send up to 40 free winks a day (20 a day in your first three days). It also says plainly that Standard members cannot start new conversations, but can reply to messages from Premium members at no cost.
The same help center describes verification by selfie video, checked against your profile photos within 24 hours, and its footer states that SeniorMatch does not run background checks. Premium is $33.99 for one month, $69.99 for three and $109.99 for six on the App Store (3.8 stars from 2.4K ratings, October 2026).
Who it suits: cautious daters who are happy to let others make the first move. The catch: reply-only. Visit SeniorMatch.
7. Stitch: best free option for friends and activities
Stitch is a community for people over 50 built around events, groups and companionship, and some members find romance there. Its pricing page says the Limited membership is free permanently and lets you attend public events, join public groups, reply to messages and contact activity organizers. Full membership, which adds member-only events, groups, chat and messages, starts at $7 a month.
Who it suits: widowed or newly single people who want a social life first, with dating as a possible bonus. The catch: how active it is depends on your city. If you lost a spouse, my widow dating sites page compares the communities built for that. Visit Stitch.
8. Finally: best free swipe app made for 50+
Finally (from Joyride GmbH) is a swipe-style app for mature singles. Its Google Play listing calls it a free mature dating app, says profiles are moderated and verified, and lists the optional Premium perks: see who liked you, unlimited likes and chatting first. It has 4.6 stars from 134K reviews and 5M+ downloads, with in-app purchases from $1.99 to $259.00 per item (October 2026).
Who it suits: people who like swiping but want an age-appropriate pool. The catch: no published monthly price, so check the price in the app before you tap anything.
9. Match: the biggest 50+ pool, as a free preview
Match belongs on any over-50 list: in Pew Research’s survey, 50% of online daters 50 and older had used Match, against 11% for Tinder. Its free side is where sources disagree. The App Store listing says you can start matching for free, get daily match suggestions, chat with recommended matches and join singles events. In my Match review, though, I found the free account a limited preview: you can build a full profile and send one free Intro a day, but you generally cannot hold back-and-forth conversations without a subscription.
So treat Match as a free way to see how many people your age are nearby, then decide. One month is $44.99 on the App Store (3.9 stars from 242K ratings, October 2026), the priciest monthly plan on this page. Visit Match.
Free in name only: sites to know before you sign up
SilverSingles shows up for this search, and Google’s AI answer lists it as free. It is free to join and browse, but communication needs a subscription, and its own pages do not spell out what a free member can do. In the iPhone app, sold by Heartnet LLC, plans are $18.99 for one month, $47.99 for three and $84.99 for six (App Store, October 2026, 4.3 stars from only 210 ratings). The most common complaints in the top results are limited free searching and matches outside your chosen distance. Its FAQ footer says it does not run background checks. My SilverSingles review rates it 3.5: a fair paid choice, not a free one. Visit SilverSingles.
Hinge and Bumble are free too. Hinge is free to use, with Selfie Verification, and its paid Hinge+ adds unlimited likes. Bumble is free, with ID verification and Share Date. Both skew younger, but if you live in a city and are open to a wider age range, they cost nothing to try. See my Hinge review and Bumble review.
Be wary of small apps that call themselves “100% free” in the store and then sell VIP or coin packs per message. My completely free dating apps page sorts the truly free ones from those.
Free or paid after 50: do you need to pay?
Not necessarily. Pew Research found that most online daters 50 and older have never paid for a dating site or app. Paying is more common among men: about half of men 50 to 64 who have used one have paid, 13 points more than women that age (Pew Research).
Paid sites argue, as eharmony’s own guide does, that a subscription filters for serious people. There is some truth to it: free pools are bigger and more mixed. But paying does not make a pool exist where there is none. The fair test is simple: run a free profile for a week or two. If you see real people your age nearby and some of them reply, the upgrade may be worth it for the features. If the free side is empty, paying will not fix it.
My rule of thumb by situation:
- You want to pay nothing, ever: Facebook Dating, plus OkCupid or Plenty of Fish.
- You only want people over 50: OurTime, then Finally.
- You want marriage and a slower pace: eharmony’s free Basic, upgrade only if matches reply.
- You are a woman who prefers to be approached: SeniorMatch’s free reply-only account can work, since paying members write first.
- You want company and outings first: Stitch.
- You live in a small town: Plenty of Fish or Match for the numbers.
What the upgrade costs if free is not enough
If you do pay, start short. Here are the cheapest entry points published on each app’s US App Store listing or pricing page. Prices checked October 2026.
| Site | Cheapest way in | One month | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Facebook Dating | Free, no paid tier | $0 | Meta newsroom |
| Stitch | Full membership | From $7 (web) | Stitch pricing page |
| OkCupid | Premium items from $7.99 | Length not shown | App Store |
| SilverSingles | 1 month | $18.99 | App Store |
| Plenty of Fish | 1 week $19.99 | $29.99 | App Store |
| OurTime | 1 week Premium $19.99 | $39.99 | App Store |
| SeniorMatch | 1 month | $33.99 | App Store |
| Match | 1 month | $44.99 | App Store |
| eharmony | 3, 6 or 12 months | Shown after sign-up | eharmony cost page |
Two things to know before you tap “buy”. Subscriptions renew automatically: SeniorMatch’s help center explains that your plan renews at the end of each billing cycle until you turn auto-renewal off. And if you paid through Apple or Google, deleting your profile does not stop billing: you cancel in your phone’s subscription settings (on iPhone: Settings, your name, Subscriptions), as the same help center spells out. For the bigger picture on free apps, my free dating sites guide covers every age group.
Staying safe on free dating sites after 50
Free sites are where scammers are cheapest to run, so this part matters more than the ranking. In Pew’s survey, 47% of online daters 50 and older said they had come across someone they thought was trying to scam them. The FTC’s romance scam page lists the pattern to watch for:
- They quickly want to move off the app to email, phone or another messenger.
- They live far away, often working abroad, on an oil rig or in the military, and can never meet.
- They ask for money for a medical bill, a ticket, a visa or a fee, or pitch a crypto investment.
- They want it by gift card, wire transfer, money transfer app or cryptocurrency, and they want it now.
The FTC’s rule is short: never send money or gifts to someone you have not met in person. Run a reverse image search on their photos, talk to a friend or family member about the new relationship, and report a scammer at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and to the app itself.
Use what the free tiers give you: verified badges on SeniorMatch, Plenty of Fish, Hinge and Bumble, Share My Date or Share Date before you meet, and the block and report buttons. A verified badge means a real face matches the photos, not that the person is safe or single. Meet in a public place, tell someone where you are going, and keep your home address and finances private until you know the person. My online dating safety guide goes further.
How to make a free profile work
- Use recent, clear photos. A face shot and one doing something you enjoy. People over 50 often complain that matches do not look like their photos; do not be one of them.
- Fill in everything. On free tiers you get fewer likes, so a complete profile does more of the work.
- Verify yourself. Where the app offers selfie or photo verification for free, do it: it helps real people trust you.
- Run two apps at once. One big pool (Facebook Dating, OkCupid or Plenty of Fish) and one 50+ app (OurTime or SeniorMatch).
- Write a specific first message. Mention something from their profile. It is the one place a free member can stand out.
The wider senior dating sites guide covers paid sites, casual sites and niche options too.
How I ranked them
I have not used these apps for this ranking. It is built from public information: each company’s help center, pricing page and App Store or Google Play listing, Meta’s own announcements, Pew Research data on daters over 50, and the FTC’s scam guidance. The order puts how much a free member can actually do first, then fit for people over 50, then safety tools and store reputation. Ratings that come from one of my full reviews are reused as published; SeniorMatch, Stitch and Finally use the same five-point rubric as my over-50 ranking (value, safety and verification, active user base, features for 50+, transparency). Facebook Dating has no review yet, so it has no rating.
Frequently asked questions
What are the best totally free dating sites for people over 50?
Facebook Dating is the only big option with no paid tier at all. OkCupid and Plenty of Fish let you message your matches for free, and OurTime gives people over 50 free chat once you match. Paid upgrades on those apps are optional.
Is there a 100% free dating site for seniors?
Not among the senior-only sites: OurTime, SeniorMatch, SilverSingles and Stitch all sell a paid membership, and SeniorMatch's free members can only reply to paying members. The closest to 100% free is Facebook Dating, which is open to everyone 18 and over, including seniors.
Which dating app is absolutely free?
Facebook Dating. Meta describes it as a free dating experience inside the Facebook app and says it does not want people paying to unlock features. You need a Facebook account and must be 18 or older.
What is the most successful dating site over 50?
By usage, Match. In Pew Research's survey, 50% of online daters aged 50 and older had used Match, against 11% for Tinder. Its free account is a preview, though: full messaging needs a subscription.
What are the complaints about SilverSingles?
The most common complaints in reviews are limited free searching, matches outside the distance you chose and slow setup. It is free to join but communication needs a subscription, from $18.99 a month in the iPhone app (October 2026), and its FAQ says it does not run background checks.
