Chapter 2 Review 2026: Legit or Waste of Money?

The Chapter 2 dating site is legit: a site and app built by a widow for widows and widowers, and one of the few that actually checks that members have lost a partner. But in October 2026 it looks small and thinly maintained in the US: the iPhone app has 12 ratings and has not been updated since May 2024, the Android listing is gone, and reading your messages costs $34.99 a month. Join free to look around, and only pay if you see active members near you.

My verdict: A sincere, widow-only community with real verification, a free forum and a founder who cares. As a US dating pool, though, the evidence points to a small one, and the few App Store reviews mention scammers. Worth a free profile for the community; worth paying for only once you have seen profiles in your area.

What is the Chapter 2 dating site, and who runs it?

Chapter 2 is “a community and dating app built by widows, for widows and widowers,” according to its About page. It was founded by Nicky Wake, a UK events entrepreneur whose husband Andy died in 2020. After trying the mainstream apps, she found them a poor fit for someone grieving, and she built a place where the other person already understands. The site says two other widows helped fund it.

The name comes from widow slang: a “chapter 2” is whatever comes next, which can mean friendship, companionship, support, dating or physical comfort. The company is Chapter 2 Dating Ltd, a UK registered company (no. 14082950, shown on the join page), and its terms say the site and app are hosted by M14 Industries and that English law applies. It launched in the UK in November 2022 and is now live in the US, Canada and Australia, per its own launch announcement. You can use it on the web or on the iPhone app. The official US page is at chapter2dating.app.

    Who Chapter 2 is for

Membership is limited to people who have lost a life partner. The US page says that includes anyone, “regardless of marital status, with or without children, inclusive of all ages and LGBTQIA+.” So an unmarried partner counts, and so does a widower in his 30s or a widow in her 70s. You must be 18 or over.

    • Good fit: widows and widowers who are tired of explaining their loss to people who do not get it, who want friendship as much as romance, and who value a forum of people in the same situation.
    • Poor fit: anyone who wants a large local pool right away, Android users who want an app (there is no current listing), and people who are not widowed (you will not get through verification).

How the Chapter 2 dating site works

The flow is simple, and it is closer to a classic dating site than a swipe app:

    1. Create a profile. Chapter 2’s membership tips encourage you to write about your late partner, how long you have been widowed and what you are looking for. Photos must be recent (within 12 months), solo, and clean.
    2. Get approved. Applications are reviewed by hand before you can use the site (details below).
    3. Find people. You search by age and location. The tips suggest setting distance to “anywhere” for the largest selection, which is a quiet hint that the local pool may be thin.
    4. Like and message. When interest is mutual, you message inside the platform. Reading and sending messages needs Premium.

The US page also mentions an “intelligent matching system,” but none of Chapter 2’s pages explain what it matches on, and the how-to guidance is all about searching. Beyond dating, there is a forum, a blog with advice on grief and dating again, and free in-person meetups. The forum is free to all members, Premium or not.

Is Chapter 2 free? What it costs in the US

Joining is free, and Chapter 2’s features and pricing page says it takes no card details unless you upgrade. Here is the split it publishes:

    FeatureBasic (free)Premium Access
    Create a profileYesYes
    PhotosUp to 10Up to 10
    Search membersYesYes
    Like membersYes (see note below)Yes
    Forum, blog, eventsYesYes
    Read your messagesNoYes
    Send unlimited messagesNoYes
See who viewed or liked youNoYes

The catch for free members is the important one: you cannot read the messages people send you. In practice, Basic is a way to browse and judge the pool, not to date.

US Premium Access planPriceWorks out to
    2 weeks$22.99about $50 per month
    1 month$34.99$34.99 per month
    3 months$79.99about $26.66 per month
    6 months$119.99about $20 per month

Prices checked October 2026 on Chapter 2’s US page. Every plan renews automatically at the end of its cycle. The App Store listing shows no in-app purchases, and Chapter 2’s pages talk about charging “your card,” so expect to pay Chapter 2 directly rather than through Apple. That matters when you want to cancel (see below).

The cheapest sensible way in: stay on Basic until you have counted real, recently active profiles within driving distance, then buy the 2-week plan as a test. It costs more per day, but it limits your exposure if the pool turns out to be quiet.

Chapter 2 contradicts itself on what is free

Two official pages disagree. The pricing page lists “Like members” and “up to 10 photos” as free Basic features. The older membership tips article says “to like someone or message them, you will need have a Premium Access membership” and that “you can add unlimited photos.” I would trust the pricing page, since it is the one tied to the current plans, but check what the app lets you do before you upgrade expecting a feature.

Is Chapter 2 safe? Verification and safety tools

This is where Chapter 2 stands apart from general dating apps. Its Acceptable Use Policy says applicants may have to:

    • pass an age check through Yoti, a third-party age verification provider;
    • prove they are widowed, with evidence such as a photo of a death certificate, a link to an obituary or death notice, a memorial or fundraising page, or a memorialized Facebook profile;
    • wait for a manual review: applications are “individually reviewed and manually approved,” and Chapter 2 can ask for more information, decline or suspend.
Flow of a Chapter 2 application: free sign-up, Yoti age check, proof of widowhood, manual review, then approved, more info or declined
From Chapter 2’s terms and Acceptable Use Policy, checked October 2026. The wording is “may,” so not every applicant sees every step.

The policy says verification documents are kept separate from your public profile. It also bans asking members for money, loans, gifts, investments, crypto or bank transfers, and says suspected scams are grounds for permanent removal. Members can report profiles inside the platform, and reports or takedown requests can go to nicky@chapter2dating.app.

Chapter 2’s own safety tips are practical: keep early chats on the platform, never send money, video call before meeting, meet somewhere public, tell a friend where you will be, and get yourself there and back. One tip is specific and useful: the platform serves the UK, US, Canada and Australia, so be wary of anyone who says they are somewhere else, and block anyone who claims to be stuck abroad. The policy itself admits no platform can guarantee who someone is, and that is worth taking literally.

    Fake profiles, scammers and complaints

There is very little public feedback, which is itself a signal. On the US App Store, Chapter 2 Dating has 1.8 stars from 12 ratings (October 2026). Of the four written reviews shown on the listing, three are negative:

    • “Just LADEN with scammers” (September 2024) praises the interface but describes constant scam messages.
    • “Not good at all” (May 2025) says all four people the reviewer messaged asked for money or a new iPhone.
    • “Error signing up” (October 2024) describes a sign-up screen with no email field.
    • The one positive review, “Better than expected” (August 2024), likes the forum and says it saw fewer scammers than on other sites.

Twelve ratings cannot tell you much either way, and the reviews predate the Yoti and widowed-status checks now written into the policy. But they line up with how romance scammers work: they target widows and widowers by design. Use the verification as a first filter, not a guarantee. Anyone who asks for money, gift cards or a phone is a scammer, every time.

Is anyone on it? What the public record shows in October 2026

Chapter 2 does not publish US member numbers. Its join page says “thousands of new widows and widowers join every month,” which I could not verify. Here is what can be checked:

    • Android: the Google Play link on Chapter 2’s own site leads to a “not found” page (checked October 12, 2026). Android users are left with the website.
    • iPhone: the app was released in April 2023 and its latest version, 1.1.0, is dated May 30, 2024. Twelve US ratings in over three years is very low.
    • Events: the events calendar lists free meetups, but almost all are in the UK. US events so far: Los Angeles (July 2024), Orlando (August 2024), Elgin, Illinois (February 2025), Las Vegas (April 2025) and Seattle (July 2025). Nothing is listed after December 2025.
    • Staffing: in a forum post, the founder wrote that she runs the site on her own alongside another business and asked members to volunteer to flag suspect profiles.
    • Activity: the website itself is maintained, with blog posts published in spring 2026.

Put together, Chapter 2 looks like a real, small, founder-run community, UK-centered, with a US branch that is still thin. That is not a reason to avoid it. It is a reason to browse free first.

    Pros and cons

    • Only widows and widowers, with age checks and proof of widowhood
    • Manual approval of every application
    • Profiles invite you to talk about your late partner, so no awkward first-date disclosure
    • Free forum and free meetups, useful even if you are not ready to date
    • No card needed to join; prices are published
    • Strong anti-scam rules and sensible safety advice
    • Free members cannot read messages
    • $34.99 for a single month is steep for a small pool
    • No current Android app; iPhone app not updated since May 2024
    • US events are rare, none listed after 2025
    • Few, mostly negative App Store reviews, including scam reports
    • Official pages disagree on free features and on how to cancel

How to cancel Chapter 2 and delete your account

Chapter 2’s pages give three routes, and they do not fully agree:

    1. The pricing page says you can “cancel your renewal online at anytime.” Look for this in your account settings first.
    2. The member enquiries form has “Cancellation” and “Account deletion” options, with a reply promised within 72 hours.
    3. The terms say to cancel by emailing john@m14.industries, the hosting company.

My advice: cancel at least a few days before the renewal date, in writing, and keep the confirmation. Under the terms, cancelling stops the next renewal but you keep access until the period ends, with no refund. The one exception: you can cancel within 14 calendar days of your first subscription and get a full refund, by emailing that same address. The terms also say Chapter 2 will contact you before a renewal so you can stop it.

Is there a right time to date again after losing a partner?

People searching for Chapter 2 also ask whether a widow can love again, which year is hardest, and how many years to wait before remarrying. There is no rule and no standard waiting period. Chapter 2’s own guide on when to start dating again says the same: some people feel ready within a year, others need several, and readiness matters more than the calendar. Grief does not follow one timetable, so no single year is “the hardest” for everyone. Signs you might be ready include curiosity about meeting people, enjoying social plans again and being able to talk about your late partner without it overwhelming you. If you are unsure, the forum and meetups are a low-pressure place to start, and plenty of members join for friendship first.

Chapter 2 alternatives for widows and widowers

If the Chapter 2 pool near you is quiet, these have live reviews on this site:

    • Widows or Widowers: another site aimed only at widowed singles.
    • EliteSingles widow dating: the widow dating section of a serious-dating service, if you want a bigger pool and do not need a widow-only space.
    • OurTime: a dating site for singles over 50, if you are open to meeting people who are not widowed.
    • SilverSingles: another option for singles over 50.

For the full comparison, see my widow dating sites ranking and the senior dating sites page.

    How I rate it

I rate Chapter 2 2.5 out of 5. The rating is based on public information, not hands-on use: Chapter 2’s published pricing, features, terms and safety policies, its App Store reputation, and the state of its apps and events in October 2026. On my five criteria: value for money 2.5 (a free tier you cannot really date on, and $34.99 for one month), safety and verification 3.5 (age checks, proof of widowhood and manual approval, offset by scam reports), evidence of an active user base 1.5 (12 App Store ratings, no Android app, few US events), features for its audience 3.5 (widow-specific profiles, free forum and meetups) and transparency 2.5 (prices and auto-renewal published, but conflicting pages on free features and cancellation). The idea is excellent; the US execution is not there yet.

    Frequently asked questions

Is Chapter 2 a safe dating site?

It is safer than most general apps on paper: its policy allows a Yoti age check, proof of widowhood such as a death certificate or obituary link, and manual approval of every application. It bans asking members for money and removes suspected scammers. Still, a few App Store reviews report scam messages, so never send money and video call before meeting.

Is the Chapter 2 dating site free?

Joining, creating a profile, searching and liking are free, and so are the forum and meetups. Reading and sending messages, and seeing who viewed or liked you, need Premium Access. No card is needed to sign up.

How does the Chapter 2 dating site work?

You create a detailed profile that can mention your late partner, your application is checked and approved by hand, then you search members by age and location. You like people and message inside the platform, which needs Premium. A free forum and in-person meetups sit alongside the dating side.

How much does Chapter 2 dating cost?

In October 2026 the US Premium Access prices are $22.99 for 2 weeks, $34.99 for 1 month, $79.99 for 3 months and $119.99 for 6 months. All plans renew automatically. The terms allow a full refund within 14 days of your first subscription.

Is there a Chapter 2 dating app for Android?

Not currently. The Google Play link on Chapter 2's website led to a not found page in October 2026. iPhone users can download the app from the App Store, and everyone can use the website.

Can a widow truly love again?

Many do. There is no set timeline: some widows feel ready within a year, others need several years, and readiness matters more than the calendar. A new relationship does not replace the love that came before.
