Best Craigslist Personals Alternatives in 2026 (Honest Picks)
The best Craigslist personals alternatives in 2026 are Doublelist if you want the same short text ads sorted by city, Reddit’s r4r communities if you want something free and anonymous, and Feeld or Tinder if you are fine with an app and a profile. AdultFriendFinder suits explicit hookups, FetLife suits kink, and Happn is the app version of missed connections. Nothing has fully replaced Craigslist personals, so pick by the section you used to browse.
Below: the picks side by side, what Doublelist really costs (prices checked October 2026 in its help center), which “replacements” from older lists no longer have personals at all, and the safety rules that matter more on classified-style sites than on apps.
Craigslist personals alternatives compared
Ratings are out of 5 and come from my reviews, linked in each row; Doublelist, Reddit and Pernals have no review on this site yet. Prices checked October 2026, every source linked in the sections below.

Why Craigslist personals shut down
Craigslist did not drop personals because they were unpopular. Its own statement on FOSTA says it took the section down after Congress passed HR 1865, because the law could make websites criminally and civilly liable when users misuse personals, and it could not take that risk without putting the rest of the site in danger. FOSTA, the Allow States and Victims to Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act, became Public Law 115-164 on April 11, 2018. Craigslist says it hopes to bring personals back someday; eight years later, it has not.
That history explains every site on this page. Any platform that runs personal ads now has to police paid services hard, which is why Doublelist bans escorting and “code words”, and why the sites that do not police them are the ones to avoid.
Why people still look for a replacement
The lists and forum threads that rank for this search agree on what made Craigslist personals special, and it was not the design.
- No profile, no swiping. You wrote a few lines about what you wanted and who you were, and people answered. No photos required, no algorithm.
- Anonymity. Replies went through a relay address, so nobody saw your real email. Many gay, bi and curious users relied on that.
- Free. Posting and replying cost nothing.
- Sections for every intent. Casual encounters, dating and romance, strictly platonic and missed connections sat side by side in every city.
No single alternative does all four. Doublelist comes closest on the first three, an app wins on crowd size, and a forum wins on price.
Pick by the Craigslist section you used
The fastest way to choose is to think about which part of Craigslist personals you actually browsed.

- If you used casual encounters: Doublelist, with AdultFriendFinder as the paid, more explicit option.
- If you used dating and romance: Tinder for volume, Feeld if you are open or curious.
- If you used strictly platonic, or a bit of everything: Reddit r4r and its city subreddits.
- If you used missed connections: Craigslist itself still has it (see below), and Happn turns the idea into an app.
- If you used it for kink: FetLife, which is a community first and a dating site second.
1. Doublelist: the closest thing to Craigslist personals
Doublelist looks and works like the old casual encounters board: text posts by city, sorted by who is looking for whom. Its homepage says it started in 2018, claims 3 million US users, and is run by Interlaced Social, LLC in San Francisco. You browse listings by city and by pairings such as “guys for women” or “couples for couples”, then reply to a post or write your own.
Three details from its help center matter before you join:
- You need a real phone number. Sign-up asks for an email and a working mobile or landline number, and VoIP numbers are not accepted. That cuts down on throwaway accounts, and it also means your number is on file.
- Replies stay anonymous by default. With email reply, Doublelist’s anonymous relay generates a temporary proxy address, so neither side sees the other’s real email unless you choose to share it. There is also an in-app messenger.
- Posts are moderated. Most ads are screened by an AI system, with human moderators reviewing anything reported, per the help center.
Its guidelines ban escorting and prostitution, including “code words” or trying to sell later, anything involving minors, drugs, contact details inside the ad, posting in several cities at once and more than 2 to 3 posts a day. They also say plainly: never share financial information or pay anyone.
Who it suits: anyone who misses writing a short ad and reading replies, especially gay, bi and curious men, who the lists ranking for this search say make up much of its crowd. The catch: it is still a classified board, so expect bots and copy-paste replies, and the free plan limits how often your ad returns to the top.
What Doublelist really costs
Doublelist is free to post, browse and reply. Paying buys visibility, mainly more “renewals”, which push an old post back to the top of its section. None of the pages ranking for this search list these numbers, so here they are from Doublelist’s own help center. Prices checked October 2026.
| Plan | Annual price (paid upfront) | Renewals per post |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 1 |
| Hookup | $45 a year | 3 |
| Hardcore | $90 a year | 10 |
Sources: subscription plans and renewing posts. Both plans also come as monthly billing, but the help center does not publish the monthly price, so check it on the checkout page before you pay.
- It auto-renews. Monthly plans renew each month and annual plans each year. The terms of use say to cancel at least one day before the next term, online in your account settings or by email to billing@doublelist.com. If you paid through Apple or Google, cancel in that store at least 24 hours before renewal.
- No partial refunds. The refund policy says refunds usually cannot be issued once a plan has started, and cancelling mid-term does not refund unused time.
- The charge shows as “dl-billing” on your statement, per the terms.
- Deleting is slow on purpose. You can delete your account in settings, but it sits in a queue for 6 months, during which you can reactivate it; only then is the data permanently deleted.
My take: start free. A paid plan only makes sense if you post often in a busy city and your free renewal is not enough.
2. Reddit r4r: free and anonymous
r/r4r (“Redditor for Redditor”) and its local spin-offs, usually named after a city plus r4r, are the most Craigslist-like thing that costs nothing. You write a text post with a tag such as [M4F] or [F4M] in the title, and people reply by direct message or chat. Google’s own AI Overview for this search names it as an alternative, and it covers every intent, from a hiking buddy to a date.
Who it suits: people who liked strictly platonic and dating ads, and anyone who wants a throwaway username instead of a profile. The catch: each subreddit sets its own rules, some ban explicit posts, and smaller cities can be quiet. Read the sidebar rules of the subreddit before you post, and treat anyone who pushes you to another app right away with suspicion.
3. Feeld: best for open-minded dating
If what you liked about Craigslist was that people said what they wanted without judgment, Feeld is the app built on that idea, for singles and couples. On the App Store it has 4.3 stars from 102K ratings and offers 20+ gender identities and 20+ sexualities; Majestic Membership costs $29.99 for 30 days, $49.99 for 90 days or $149.99 for a year (October 2026). Majestic adds seeing who liked you, private photos and one free Ping a day.
I rated it 4 out of 5 in my Feeld review. Who it suits: couples, queer and curious people, and anyone who wants a casual crowd with real profiles. The catch: it is app-only and profile-based, so it is not anonymous like a text ad. More apps like this are on my swinger dating sites page.
4. Tinder: best for the biggest crowd
If you just want the most people near you, nothing on this list comes close. Tinder has 4.2 stars from 1.8M ratings on the App Store, where Tinder Plus is listed at $9.99 and Tinder Gold from $13.99 to $24.99 (October 2026). Swiping, matching and chatting are free. The listing says Tinder offers several ways to verify profiles and a way to share your date plans with a friend.
I rated it 4 out of 5 in my Tinder review. Who it suits: anyone in a city who wants dating or casual and does not mind photos. The catch: you need mutual matches before anyone can write, so it is slower than replying to an ad. If casual is the goal, my best dating apps for casual dating ranking compares Tinder with the other casual apps in more detail.
5. AdultFriendFinder: best for explicit hookups
AdultFriendFinder is the paid, explicit version of casual encounters: frank profiles, forums, live chat, and a crowd that is there for sex, not romance. My AdultFriendFinder review rates it 3.8 out of 5 and lists Standard at about $19.95 a month and Gold at about $39.95, with joining, browsing and the forums free. You can find it at AdultFriendFinder.
Who it suits: adults in a big metro who are willing to pay to message. The catch: free accounts attract bots, plans auto-renew, and it is far less private than a relay-email ad. Use a separate email and no recognizable face photos. More options are on my hookup dating sites page.
6. FetLife: best for kink
Plenty of Craigslist users browsed for kink. FetLife is where that community moved: a social network of groups, events and writing rather than a matching app. My FetLife review rates it 3.5 out of 5 and notes it is mostly free, messages included, with an optional Supporter membership at $5 a month. It is at fetlife.com.
Who it suits: people who want to learn, go to munches and events, and meet locals over time. The catch: it is not built for quick meetups, and it is not a dating site, so vet people the same way you would anywhere else. Dedicated sites are on my BDSM and kink sites page.
7. Happn: missed connections as an app
Happn shows you people you have physically crossed paths with, which is the closest any app gets to a missed connections board. On the App Store it has 4.3 stars from 49K ratings, subscriptions listed from $14.99 to $24.99, and a badge for certified profiles (October 2026). Matching and chatting are free.
I rated it 3 out of 5 in my Happn review. Who it suits: city dwellers who walk, commute and go out. The catch: in small towns the feed can be empty.
Does Craigslist still have dating?
No personals, but not nothing. On the New York Craigslist page, “missed connections” is still listed under community, and the section had live posts in October 2026 (“We spoke on the F train”, “You picked up my bluetooth earbud case”). There is no casual encounters, dating or strictly platonic section. So if you are hoping to find the person you saw on the train, Craigslist is still the first place to look; for anything else, use the alternatives above.
Pernals: the app that calls itself a Craigslist replacement
Pernals ranks for this search with its own homepage, and it used to be called Cragly. Its App Store listing describes a local personals app for iPhone, rated 18+, with 4.5 stars from 11K ratings; VIP costs $14.99 for 1 month, $34.99 for 3 months or $59.99 for 6 months, and renews automatically unless you turn it off at least 24 hours before the end of the period (October 2026). The developer says it manually reviews every post.
I would be careful: several reviews on that same listing describe scammers, and the seller’s name on the store is an individual, not a company. Try it free before you pay for VIP, and never move to another app or pay anyone because a match asks.
Old “replacements” that no longer have personals
Many lists that rank for this search were written in 2018 to 2021 and never updated. Before you go looking:
- ClassifiedAds.com is still a free classifieds site, but its category list (October 2026) has jobs, vehicles, pets, real estate, services and community, and no personals section at all.
- Hoobly is a pets-and-goods classifieds site; even the lists that recommend it admit it has no personals.
- Locanto and Oodle both blocked automated access to their personals sections during this October 2026 update, so their current offer could not be confirmed at the source. If you try them, assume nothing is moderated.
Sites I would not use
Older lists also recommend Bedpage, iBackpage and AdultSearch, which those lists present as replacements for Backpage. A board built for that market is not a dating site, and paying for sex is illegal in most of the US. Every option ranked above bans paid services. If a site’s listings read like advertisements with rates, leave.
The same goes for sugar dating: Seeking appears on some lists, but it is a different thing. If that is what you want, start with my sugar daddy sites page, which explains the rules. And if you were using Craigslist for an affair, my Ashley Madison alternatives page covers discreet sites.
Safety on classified-style sites
A text ad tells you less about a person than a profile with verified photos, so do more of the checking yourself.
- Keep the relay as long as you can. Use Doublelist’s anonymous email or in-app messages, or Reddit chat, before you give out a number.
- Ask for a recent photo or a short video call before meeting, and run the photo through a reverse image search.
- Meet in public, get there on your own, and tell a friend where you are and who you are meeting.
- Never send money, gift cards or crypto. The FTC’s romance scam guide lists the warning signs: moving off the platform fast, “true love” from someone who cannot meet, and requests for money for travel, emergencies or investments. Report scams at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and to the site where you met.
- Report bad ads. Doublelist has a report form in its help center, and Reddit lets you report posts to the subreddit moderators.
For more ideas beyond this list, the dating app alternatives hub collects every alternatives page, and my LGBTQ+ dating sites page covers the apps many former Craigslist users moved to.
How I ranked them
This ranking is based on public information, not on new hands-on use: each site’s help center, guidelines, terms and app store listings (checked October 2026), plus the ratings from my original reviews where they exist. I ranked first what most closely reproduces Craigslist personals (short ads, anonymity, low cost), then the apps that serve each old section best. Doublelist, Reddit and Pernals are not rated because I have not reviewed them; their position reflects how closely they match what Craigslist personals did and what their own policies say.
Frequently asked questions
Are there other sites like Craigslist personals?
Yes. Doublelist is the closest copy, with short text ads sorted by city and an anonymous email relay. Reddit's r4r communities are a free alternative, and apps like Feeld, Tinder and Happn cover dating, casual and missed connections with profiles instead of ads.
Why did Craigslist personals shut down?
Craigslist removed personals in 2018 after Congress passed FOSTA (HR 1865), which became law on April 11, 2018. Craigslist said the law could make websites criminally and civilly liable for users' misuse of personals, a risk it would not take for the rest of the site.
Does Craigslist still have dating?
Not personals. There is no casual encounters, dating or strictly platonic section in the US, but missed connections is still listed under community and had live posts in October 2026.
What is like Doublelist?
Reddit r4r and its city subreddits work the same way, with text posts and replies, and cost nothing. If you are fine with an app, Feeld and Tinder have bigger crowds, and AdultFriendFinder suits explicit hookups.
Is there a free Doublelist?
Doublelist itself is free to post, browse and reply. Paid plans, Hookup at $45 a year and Hardcore at $90 a year per its help center (October 2026), mainly add more post renewals. They auto-renew, and unused time is not refunded.
