Grindr vs Scruff: Which Is Better in 2026?

Grindr vs SCRUFF comes down to this: pick Grindr if you want the most men near you and the fastest route to meeting tonight, pick SCRUFF if you want verified profiles, events and travel tools, and a crowd that leans older, hairier and more masc. Both are free, location-based grids for gay, bi, trans and queer men, and both lean toward hookups, so neither is a relationship app. If you only install one in a US city, I’d start with Grindr for the numbers and add SCRUFF when a verification badge or a trip matters to you.

My verdict: Grindr wins on size and speed, SCRUFF wins on safety tools and value. Grindr’s free grid shows only “dozens” of men and its top tier costs the most, while SCRUFF lets any member verify with a photo badge, something Grindr does not offer at all. Many men run both: the two apps answer different questions.

Ratings from the Grindr App Store listing, the SCRUFF App Store listing, Grindr on Google Play and SCRUFF on Google Play, checked October 2026.

Who uses each app

Grindr is the default gay app: it launched in March 2009 as one of the first location-based apps for gay men and is the one nearly every man on the other apps also has. Its reputation is hookups first, and its features back that up: Right Now lets you post a one-hour status saying you are available, whether you can host, with an optional photo that Grindr moderates. Plenty of men use Grindr to chat, make friends while traveling or find dates, but the grid is built for “who is close, right now.”

SCRUFF launched in 2010 and built its name on the bearded, hairy and muscular end of gay culture and still draws a crowd that skews older and more masc, though anyone can join. It is a hookup app too: the same nearby grid, the same direct messaging. What changes is what surrounds the grid. SCRUFF adds events, travel planning and a swipe-style Match stack, which makes it easier to use for dates or for meeting locals in a new city. Several comparisons in Google’s top results say SCRUFF is for “serious relationships”; nothing in SCRUFF’s own description says so, and I would not choose it on that basis.

If you are mostly here because you are tired of Grindr, my guide to the best Grindr alternatives sorts the options by the reason you want to leave: the paywall, privacy, or hookup fatigue.

How big is each app (and does anyone still use SCRUFF?)

Grindr is much bigger. In its Q2 2026 shareholder letter, Grindr reports 15 million average monthly active users and 1.4 million average paying users. SCRUFF is private and publishes no monthly figure: its App Store listing claims “30+ million users,” and its website says “40M+ members,” which are lifetime sign-up counts, not people active this month.

The app stores give a fairer side-by-side: Grindr has about 13 times as many App Store ratings and 14 times as many Google Play ratings as SCRUFF. So yes, people still use SCRUFF (both apps were updated in October 2026), but in most US towns you will see more men on Grindr. SCRUFF is strongest in big cities and gay travel destinations, where its event listings fill up.

How browsing and matching work

Grindr: the grid, Right Now and For You

Open Grindr and the Grid shows the men closest to you, plus anyone paying for a Boost. You can filter by tags and other criteria, tap a profile to say hi, or message directly; chat supports photos and private albums you can share or take back. On top of the grid sit:

  • For You, six curated profiles a day. Anyone sees them, but only Unlimited subscribers can message them.
  • Right Now, one-hour “I’m available” sessions. Your free sessions reset every Friday at 5 PM local time, and you can buy more. A Discreet option posts without linking your profile.
  • Map View, a map of nearby avatars being tested in select cities. Grindr says your pin is placed at a random point near you, not your exact location.

SCRUFF: grid, Woofs, Match and Explore

SCRUFF’s grid works the same way: men nearby, search and filters, chat. A “Woof” is its version of a tap. Per its App Store listing, SCRUFF also has:

  • Match, a daily stack you swipe through, with both people notified when it is mutual, and an “I’m Interested” button on profiles.
  • Explore, a calendar of LGBTQ parties, prides and festivals where you can RSVP, see who else is going and chat with locals before you arrive. The website now presents trip planning as Cities, so older articles calling it “Venture” describe the same idea under an older name.
  • Video chat, profile hashtags, and fields for pronouns, gender identity and safer-sex practices.

Three of the comparison pages ranking for this search end by selling GPS-spoofing software to “unlock” profiles elsewhere. Skip that: faking your location breaks both apps’ rules and can get you banned. SCRUFF’s Cities and Grindr’s Explore (on XTRA, up to five global chats a day) are the legitimate ways to talk to men in another city.

Free vs paid: what each free tier really gets you

Both apps are free to download and use, and both put their biggest limit on how many men you can see.

  • Grindr free: per its help center, free users “can view dozens of nearby profiles.” You can chat, share private albums, use some filters and tags, block and report, and you see third-party ads.
  • SCRUFF free: grid, search, filters, chat, Woofs, Match and events. SCRUFF says “you’ll never see banner ads” and that it does not share data with third-party ad networks, but SCRUFF Pro lists “no fullscreen ads” as a perk, so the free app does show full-screen ads.

In practice, a free Grindr grid runs out fast in a busy city, which is the main reason people pay. SCRUFF’s free tier is more generous on features, but its pool is smaller to begin with.

What you pay: Grindr XTRA and Unlimited vs SCRUFF Pro

Neither company publishes a US price list on the web: prices appear on the subscribe screen in the app and vary with plan length. Here is what each tier adds, from the official pages, and the in-app purchase prices the US App Store lists.

TierWhat it addsPrices listed on the US App Store
Grindr XTRANo third-party ads, up to 500 nearest profiles, more filters (online now, photos only, position), read receipts, 5 expiring photos a day, 5 global chats a day via Explore, Grindr Web$14.99, $14.99, $22.99
Grindr UnlimitedEverything in XTRA, plus every profile on the grid, Viewed Me, Incognito, typing status, unsend within 24 hours, chat translation, messaging For You picks$27.99, $27.99, $44.99; Unlimited Day Pass $9.99
Grindr extrasBoost (more visibility); two items labeled only “1 MONTH”Boost $11.99; 1 MONTH $24.99 and $27.99
SCRUFF ProUp to 1,000 nearby members, stealth mode, browse anonymously, read receipts, more filters, no full-screen ads, unlimited private album unlocks, full message history, video sending$9.99, $12.99, $12.99, $14.99, $16.99, $19.99, $39.99, $119.99 (30-day, 90-day and 1-year plans)
SCRUFF Browsing Pro / Messaging ProSmaller add-ons for browsing or messaging$3.99 / $4.99

Prices checked October 2026. Grindr tiers from its help pages on XTRA and Unlimited; SCRUFF Pro features from scruff.com; prices from the App Store listings linked above, which show amounts without matching each one to a plan length. On Google Play, Grindr lists in-app items from $0.99 to $769.99 and SCRUFF from $0.99 to $169.99.

Grindr also tests Grindr Edge, an AI tier with everything in Unlimited plus daily recommendations and chat recaps, in select US cities, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Grindr says testers may see “different randomized prices,” so two people can be quoted different amounts.

The useful comparison is what you are paying to fix. On Grindr, XTRA fixes the small grid and the ads; Unlimited is for seeing everyone, browsing invisibly and seeing who viewed you. On SCRUFF, Pro mostly widens the grid to 1,000 men and adds stealth, and most of its listed items cost less than Grindr Unlimited’s. If you only want to see more men, compare Grindr XTRA with SCRUFF Pro; if you want to browse unseen, both offer it, at very different prices.

Why the numbers you read about Grindr and SCRUFF disagree

The top results for this search contradict each other and the apps themselves. Here is what is current, and why.

  • Prices. Pages quote Grindr Unlimited at $29.99 a month and SCRUFF Pro at $19.99, or a 2019 table with SCRUFF Pro at $14.99 and Grindr XTRA at $13. Today’s App Store items range from $14.99 to $44.99 on Grindr and $9.99 to $119.99 on SCRUFF Pro, and Grindr tests randomized Edge prices. Trust the price in your app’s subscribe screen, not an article.
  • How many profiles XTRA shows. Grindr’s help center says XTRA shows up to 500 profiles; its App Store listing says up to 600. Plan on 500 and treat anything more as a bonus.
  • User counts. The “27 million users” and “15 million users” figures repeated across the results are old totals. Grindr now reports 15 million monthly active users; SCRUFF claims 30+ million users on the App Store and 40M+ members on its site, neither a monthly figure.
  • Who has incognito. Some pages say you cannot browse SCRUFF invisibly. SCRUFF Pro lists both stealth mode and “browse anonymously,” so you can.

Safety: verification is the biggest difference

This is where the apps differ most, and none of the top-ranking comparisons mention it. SCRUFF offers optional photo verification: a live selfie that, per its App Store listing, takes seconds and adds a badge other men can see. Perry Street’s dating safety policy is clear about its limits: the badge shows that a live photo matches the profile photos, and it “is not a background check, an identity-document check, or a guarantee that a person is safe.” Bans for fraud, violence or exploitation apply across SCRUFF, Jack’d and GROWLR at once.

Grindr has no member-facing verification badge. It checks phone numbers by SMS for accounts made with an email (at most five accounts per number), asks for an identity selfie only when a profile is reported for impersonation, and runs a video-selfie age check where the law requires it (the UK, Australia, Brazil) or when an account looks underage. Neither company runs criminal background checks, and Grindr says so on its safety policy page.

Faceless and blank profiles are common on both apps, especially outside big cities, where many men stay discreet for good reasons. A badge cannot tell you who someone is, but on SCRUFF it at least tells you the face in the photos is real.

Red flags on Grindr and SCRUFF

Grindr’s scam awareness guide lists the patterns to watch for, and they apply on SCRUFF too:

  • Anyone asking for money, gift cards, crypto or an “investment,” or asking you to pay before you meet.
  • A “sugar daddy” offering to pay you, or asking you to create app accounts for him.
  • A request for a verification code sent to your phone: that is an account takeover attempt.
  • Links to other apps or sites, or a message claiming to be Grindr support.
  • Sextortion: explicit photos traded early, then a demand for money. Do not pay; report it to the app and to the FBI at ic3.gov.

Before meeting anyone from either app: ask for a short video call (SCRUFF has video chat built in), meet in a public place first, tell a friend where you are going, and arrange your own way home. To report on Grindr, open the profile, tap the block icon, then Report; Grindr’s reporting guide notes that reporting does not block, so block too. On SCRUFF, use the menu at the top right of the profile. For a wider look at warning signs, see my guide to online dating scams and the online dating safety hub.

Privacy and ads

Grindr’s free app runs third-party ads, and its App Store privacy label lists location, identifiers and usage data as used to track you, with sensitive info and health data among the data linked to you. Grindr says sensitive health data is excluded from its AI features, which you can turn off in Privacy Settings. SCRUFF says it does not share data with third-party ad networks and lets you keep or disable analytics tracking. For invisible browsing, Grindr puts Incognito behind Unlimited; SCRUFF puts stealth mode behind Pro.

Canceling either subscription

Both apps bill through the App Store or Google Play and renew automatically unless you turn renewal off at least 24 hours before the period ends.

  • Grindr: cancel in your App Store or Google Play subscriptions, not in the app. Grindr’s cancellation guide warns that deleting your profile or the app does not cancel the subscription. Its refund policy says all purchases are final; for iPhone purchases only Apple can refund, through reportaproblem.apple.com.
  • SCRUFF: turn off auto-renew in Settings, your Apple ID, Subscriptions (or in Google Play). The App Store terms say you cannot cancel a SCRUFF Pro period in progress, so a 1-year plan runs to the end.

Grindr or SCRUFF: pick by what you want

If you are still undecided, start from what matters most to you this month.

Decision chart: the most men nearby or meeting within the hour point to Grindr; verified profiles, events and travel, or bears and older men point to SCRUFF
  • You want the most men nearby: Grindr. With 15 million monthly users, its pool is far bigger almost everywhere.
  • You want to meet within the hour: Grindr and its Right Now feed.
  • You want to know he is real: SCRUFF, and favor men with the verification badge.
  • You are traveling or love a party: SCRUFF, for Explore and Cities.
  • You are into bears, daddies or older men, or are one: SCRUFF is built around that crowd.
  • You want to pay as little as possible: start free on both, then pay for SCRUFF Pro or Grindr XTRA, not Unlimited.
  • You want a boyfriend: neither is ideal. Look at the dating-first options in my LGBTQ+ dating sites guide, or my best gay hookup apps ranking if you just want the right hookup app.

How I compared them

This comparison is based on public information, not on hands-on use of either app: Grindr’s help center and SEC filings, SCRUFF’s website, Perry Street’s safety policy, and both apps’ App Store and Google Play listings, all checked in October 2026. I weighed size of the user base, what the free tier allows, what each paid tier fixes and costs, safety and verification tools, and how clearly each company explains renewals and refunds.

Frequently asked questions

Is SCRUFF better than Grindr?

It depends on what you want. Grindr has far more users (15 million a month) and is faster for meeting nearby, while SCRUFF offers a photo verification badge, event listings and travel tools, and its crowd skews older and more masc. Many men use both.

Does anyone still use SCRUFF?

Yes. SCRUFF was updated in October 2026, has 4.4 stars from 29K ratings on the App Store and more than 10 million Google Play downloads. It is much smaller than Grindr, so it is busiest in big cities and gay travel destinations.

What are red flags on Grindr?

Grindr's scam guide warns about anyone asking for money, gift cards, crypto or investments, pay-before-you-meet offers, sugar daddy offers, requests for verification codes, links to other apps and messages pretending to be Grindr support. Sextortion is another: never pay, block and report the profile.

Did Tinder start as Grindr?

No. Grindr launched in March 2009 as its own company, and Tinder launched in 2012 out of Hatch Labs, an incubator owned by IAC. They are separate apps from separate companies: Tinder belongs to Match Group, Grindr to Grindr Inc.

What is the Grindr app used for?

Grindr is a location-based app for gay, bi, trans and queer people that shows the profiles closest to you. Most people use it for quick meetups and chatting, though some use it to make friends or find dates, especially when traveling.

What does "dirty" mean on Grindr?

In Grindr's own tag glossary, the Dirty tag refers to someone's interests in sex, such as kinks or dirty talk. Grindr says it does not refer to hygiene, STI status or substance use.
