Best Gay Hookup Apps in 2026: Ranked

The best gay hookup apps in 2026 are Grindr if you want the biggest pool of men near you, Sniffies if you want to cruise on a live map without showing your face, and SCRUFF if you want a Grindr-style grid with photo verification and travel features. Adam4Adam is the pick if you refuse to pay, Jack’d, GROWLR and Daddyhunt serve specific communities, and Hornet works best when you travel.

Below: the ranked list with what each app really costs (from the US App Store listings and official help pages, checked October 2026), how to pick by what you want tonight, and the safety steps that matter most for gay hookups, including a lure-and-rob pattern that federal prosecutors have documented on these apps.

The best gay hookup apps at a glance

Ratings are out of 5 and come from my full reviews, linked in the table; apps without a review on the site yet are marked “not rated”. Store ratings and prices are from each app’s US App Store listing, linked in its section.

How I ranked these gay hookup apps

This ranking is built from public information, not from new hands-on testing: each app’s App Store listing and rating count, its help center and pricing, its safety and verification tools, and company announcements, all checked in October 2026. For a hookup list, the first question is simple: are there enough active men near you? So the size of the pool weighs most, then what the free version lets you do, then verification and privacy tools, then how clearly the app explains its prices and renewals. Where I have a full review, the rating in the table is the one from that review, so the two never disagree.

1. Grindr: best gay hookup app overall

Grindr is still the default, and the numbers explain why: its App Store listing has 4.5 stars from 389K ratings, more ratings than every other app on this list combined. It opens on a grid of the men closest to you, and for hookups it now has a dedicated tool: Right Now, a one-hour session where you post what you are in the mood for, say whether you can host, and optionally show on a Right Now map. Free sessions reset every Friday at 5 PM local time, and a Discreet option lets you post without linking your profile.

What free gets you: nearby profiles, chat, private albums, tags and basic filters. The catch is the size of the grid. Grindr’s help page on the Grid says free users “can view dozens of nearby profiles”, XTRA subscribers up to 500 and Unlimited subscribers all of them. Only Unlimited users can message the six daily For You picks.

What it costs: on the App Store, XTRA items run $14.99 to $22.99 and Unlimited $27.99 to $44.99, with a $11.99 Boost. The smartest buy for a single night is the Unlimited Day Pass at $9.99: 24 hours of every Unlimited feature, and it “does not auto-renew”.

Who it suits: almost everyone, at least as a first app. The catch: a small free grid, ads, and a privacy record many men still worry about (more on that below). If those are your reasons for wanting out, my list of Grindr alternatives sorts the options by what each one fixes.

2. Sniffies: best for cruising on a live map

Sniffies replaces the grid with a map of men nearby, groups and cruising spots. It runs in the browser as a web app with nothing to download, and its own HUSH blog stresses anonymous sign-in and discreet profiles, and pitches itself to bi and straight-curious men as much as to gay men. Its Group feature lets people organize group meetups, which no grid app here does as directly.

It is no longer a niche: in April 2026 Match Group, the owner of Tinder and Hinge, invested $100 million for a significant minority stake, and the release estimates about 3 million monthly active users and more than 20 million messages a day.

What it costs: the map, profiles and chat are free. Sniffies Plus prices only appear inside the web app after you log in; my Sniffies review lists what Plus adds (discreet mode, travel mode, unlimited profiles) and its no-refund rule.

Who it suits: men who want spontaneous, local, low-profile meetups. The catch: there is no app in the App Store or Google Play, most profiles are unverified, and your approximate position sits on a live map.

3. SCRUFF: best for verified profiles and travel

SCRUFF works like Grindr (a grid of men nearby, search, chat) but adds a daily Match stack, events and trip planning. Its App Store listing claims “30+ million users, no spambots”, has 4.4 stars from 29K ratings, and offers photo verification “in seconds” with a badge other members can check. For hookups, that badge is the main reason to pick it over Grindr.

What it costs: SCRUFF Pro comes in 30-day, 90-day and one-year plans, with Pro items from $9.99 to $119.99, plus Browsing Pro at $3.99 and Messaging Pro at $4.99. The listing does not say which price matches which length.

Is Scruff better than Grindr? For verification, events and a slightly older, hairier crowd, yes. For sheer numbers, no: Grindr has more than ten times as many App Store ratings. The catch: it is the same kind of hookup grid, so it will not change the culture if that is what bothers you.

4. Adam4Adam: best free gay hookup app

Adam4Adam has the most generous free tier here. Its App Store listing promises unlimited profiles across five location-based grids, more than 20 filters, unlimited messages and photos, and a list of who visited you, all free. It has 4.7 stars from 49K ratings.

What it costs: VIP is $9.99 a month, $24.99 for 3 months, $44.99 for 6 months and $77.99 a year per the description (the purchase list shows $79.99 for the year). VIP mainly adds invisible browsing, no publicity and longer chat history.

Who it suits: men who want to chat and meet without a subscription. The catch: as my Adam4Adam review explains, there is no profile verification and bot reports go back years, so treat too-good profiles as fake until a video call proves otherwise.

5. Jack’d: best for a more diverse crowd

Jack’d is known for a diverse community with a focus on gay men of color, and it comes from Perry Street Software, the company behind SCRUFF and GROWLR. Its App Store listing lists search and filters, an “I’m Interested” mutual match, private albums, profile verification with a badge, video chat and a link to a Safety Center.

What it costs: Jack’d Pro 1 Week is $7.99 and Jack’d Pro 1 Month is listed at $9.99, $12.99 or $16.99; a 60-minute Boost is $5.99.

Who it suits: men of color who want a crowd that looks like them. The catch: 3.7 stars from 6.4K ratings, a fraction of Grindr’s pool, so it is quieter in most US cities.

6. GROWLR: best for bears

GROWLR is built for bears, cubs and the men who like them. Its App Store listing claims over 10 million members worldwide, lists private messages and photos, galleries, check-ins and an events section with bear runs and bear bars, and has 4.3 stars from 50K ratings.

What it costs: PRO is $9.99 for a month, $23.99 for 3 months, $44.99 for 6 months and $71.99 for a year, per the description.

Who it suits: men who want a body-positive niche rather than a general grid. The catch: outside bear-friendly cities, expect long distances on the grid.

7. Daddyhunt: best for older men and their admirers

Daddyhunt is for daddies and the guys who like them, and its homepage pitches it as a place where “you never have to lie about your age”. The App Store listing says over 70% of members are photo-verified, the highest share any app here claims, and the app has 4.3 stars from 6.2K ratings. Its sister app Mr X comes from the same seller, DH Services.

What it costs: Premium items are $9.99 for a week, then $14.99, $39.99 and $119.99 for the longer plans; Premium adds unlimited profiles, 20+ filters, travel mode and invisible mode.

Who it suits: men over 40 tired of age filters, and younger men looking for them. The catch: a small pool next to Grindr.

8. Hornet: best when you travel

Hornet mixes a nearby grid with a social feed. Its App Store listing lists identity verification, screenshot protection for private photos, video chat, live streaming and Travel Modes, and it has 3.8 stars from 3.2K ratings.

What it costs: Premium Membership 1 Month is $19.99 and 3 Months $21.99, with other Premium items from $9.99 to $39.99 and a one-hour Boost at $9.99.

Who it suits: men who travel to cities where Hornet is busier than Grindr. The catch: in most of the US the grid is thin, which is why my Hornet review calls it a good free second app rather than your main one.

9. Squirt: old-school cruising on the web

Squirt is a hookup and cruising site built around listings of cruising spots, chat, message boards and video chat rooms. Its homepage says “Basic membership is always free” and needs no credit card, members must be 18 or older, and a phone app is now offered through SQ Dating with “no geographic restrictions” on chat, which helps if you want to line things up before a trip.

What it costs: the homepage does not publish premium prices, so check the plan and renewal terms on the payment page before you enter a card. The catch: it is a website first, explicit by design, and smaller than the apps above.

Which gay hookup app should you use tonight?

  • You want the most options right now: Grindr, with a Right Now session; buy the $9.99 Day Pass only if the free grid runs dry.
  • You want to stay anonymous or you are bi or curious: Sniffies, no face picture needed.
  • You want to know he is real: SCRUFF or Daddyhunt, and only meet men with a verification badge.
  • You will not pay a cent: Adam4Adam, or the free tiers in my list of best free hookup apps.
  • You want your community: Jack’d for men of color, GROWLR for bears, Daddyhunt for daddies.
  • You are traveling: SCRUFF or Hornet for trip planning, Squirt for chatting before you land.
  • You want dates more than hookups: skip the grids and browse my LGBTQ+ dating sites list.

What gay hookup apps cost, and the cheapest way in

None of the readable pages ranking for this search puts the prices side by side, so here they are. Every number comes from the App Store listing or official page linked in each app’s section above.

Prices checked October 2026. Three rules save the most money:

  • Skip weekly plans. Daddyhunt’s $9.99 week and Jack’d’s $7.99 week cost almost as much as a month. Grindr’s Day Pass is the exception, because it does not renew.
  • Cancel in the store, not in the app. Grindr’s cancellation guide says deleting your profile or the app “will not automatically cancel your subscription”. On iPhone: App Store, your profile icon, Subscriptions. On Android: Google Play, Payments & Subscriptions, Subscriptions. The same goes for every app bought through Apple or Google.
  • Do not count on a refund. Grindr’s refund policy says all purchases are final; for iPhone purchases only Apple can refund, through reportaproblem.apple.com.

Where the other lists get gay hookup apps wrong

Two things in the current results do not hold up when you check the source.

  • Brand-owned rankings. One page ranking for this search is published by Splashd, a new app, and it ranks Splashd first with an “optional Plus” at $9.99 a month. Its own App Store listing also sells Premium at $19.99 a month and Unlimited at $29.99 a month, and it has only 51 ratings. The same page puts Grindr Unlimited at about $49.99 a month, above anything on Grindr’s App Store listing ($44.99 is the highest Unlimited item). A free map and grid is a real draw, but it is too early to rank an app with 51 ratings for hookups, where the size of the local pool is everything.
  • Grindr’s XTRA limit. The App Store listing says XTRA lets you view up to 600 profiles; the help center says up to 500. The help page was updated in October 2026, so I go with 500, but either way XTRA is a bigger grid, not the full one.

Staying safe on gay hookup apps

Hookup apps put strangers in your home within the hour, so the risks are sharper than on a dating app. For the general rules (verification, scams, first dates), my online dating safety guide covers the full picture. These are the specifics for gay hookups.

The lure-and-rob pattern

Federal prosecutors have documented men using Grindr to target gay men. In a 2022 Los Angeles case, the US Attorney’s Office says a man was sentenced to 111 months for robbing five victims he met on Grindr between June 2021 and March 2022. He met them at their homes or hotel rooms “under the pretense of sexual encounters”, asked to use their phones, then used them to send himself money through Venmo, open a line of credit through Apple Pay and text their families for cash. The judge applied a hate-crime enhancement.

The lesson is practical: never hand an unlocked phone to a hookup, keep payment apps behind a separate PIN or Face ID, and leave cash and valuables out of sight when you host. Grindr’s safety tips add a PIN Lock for the app itself and say to avoid bringing valuables when you go to someone else’s place.

Five checks before you meet

Run through these before every first meetup, whichever app you use.

Five checks before a hookup: verify with a video call, keep the chat in the app, never pay first, tell a friend, guard your phone
Based on Grindr’s safety tips and the FTC’s romance scam advice, checked October 2026.
  1. Verify him. Prefer men with a verification badge (SCRUFF, Jack’d, Hornet, Daddyhunt) and ask for a short in-app video call. Grindr recommends video chat before meeting “whenever possible”.
  2. Keep the chat in the app. Grindr warns that scammers push you to email or other messaging apps to avoid detection.
  3. Never pay before you meet. Grindr’s scam awareness guide describes the pay-before-you-meet scam: a gift card, gas money, or a sign-up on another site, then a fake address. It also flags fake “security app” verifications where someone asks you to register on a third-party site before meeting. Real users do not need either.
  4. Tell a friend where you are going and when you expect to be back, and keep control of your own ride home.
  5. Guard your phone and your drink. Do not accept drinks or drugs from strangers, and do not lend your unlocked phone.

Sextortion and the discreet scam

Grindr’s scam guide describes scammers who record video calls or save nudes, then threaten to send them to your contacts, and says they “often specifically target people who are married or looking for discreet interactions”. A variant claims, after an exchange, that the other person was underage, then demands money from “the parents”. The advice is the same in both cases: do not pay, do not send more pictures, save the messages, report the profile, and report the threat to the FBI or local police. If someone you met online asks for money in any form, the FTC’s romance scam page says it plainly: “Never send money or gifts to a sweetheart you haven’t met in person.” Report fraud at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Your location and your privacy

  • Distance is close. Grindr says it collects location to about 100 meters, and that even with Show Distance off, the grid is still sorted by proximity, so someone can estimate how far away you are.
  • Hide the app. Grindr offers discreet app icons that look like a utility app, useful if you share a phone or are not out.
  • Read the privacy label. Under “App Privacy” on the App Store, Grindr says location, identifiers and usage data may be used to track you across other companies’ apps, and it links sensitive info and health data to you. If your HIV status or PrEP use is on your profile, decide whether you want that stored.
  • Traveling abroad: Grindr warns that in some countries authorities use apps to identify and arrest LGBTQ+ people. Check local laws before you open a grid app there.

Grindr also reminds users to talk about safer sex and to test regularly for HIV and other STIs. For more on meeting safely on casual apps of every kind, see my hookup dating sites guide.

Other apps gay men use for hookups

  • Tinder: a huge mainstream pool (4.2 stars from 1.8M ratings on the App Store, Tinder Plus from $9.99), but the gay crowd there leans toward dates and the swipe format is slow for tonight.
  • Feeld: for open relationships, couples and kink-curious men; better for adventurous plans than for a quick meetup.
  • ROMEO: a European app (the seller is PlanetRomeo B.V.), worth a look when you travel in Europe; 4.4 stars from 9.4K ratings in the US App Store.
  • Mr X: Daddyhunt’s sister app from DH Services, with 3.9 stars from 443 ratings in the US App Store.
  • MenNation: an adult website for gay and bi men; as my review explains, messaging needs a paid plan, so try the free apps above first.
  • Hinge and Bumble: relationship-first apps. If you are asking which is better for gay men, Hinge has the stronger reputation for dates, but neither is built for hookups.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best gay hookup app?

Grindr has the most men nearby in most US cities, with 389K ratings on the App Store, so it is the best first app. Sniffies is the best choice for anonymous map-based cruising, and SCRUFF is better if you want verified profiles.

Is Scruff better than Grindr?

SCRUFF is better for photo verification, events and travel planning, and its crowd skews a little older and hairier. Grindr is better for sheer numbers, with more than ten times as many App Store ratings. Many men keep both.

What is replacing Grindr?

Nothing has replaced Grindr, but Sniffies is the fastest-growing rival: Match Group invested $100 million in it in April 2026 and estimates about 3 million monthly active users. SCRUFF, Jack'd and Adam4Adam are the other common switches.

Which gay hookup app is free?

Adam4Adam has the most generous free tier, with unlimited messages and profiles. Sniffies is free for the map, profiles and chat, and Grindr's free version shows dozens of nearby profiles. Paid plans mainly add more profiles, filters and privacy modes.

What does GGG mean on a dating app?

GGG stands for good, giving and game: someone who is a good partner, generous and open to trying things. You see it in profiles on hookup and kink apps as shorthand for being open-minded and attentive.

Is Hinge or Bumble better for gay men?

For dates and relationships, Hinge generally has the stronger reputation among gay men. Neither is built for hookups, so for casual meetups a grid or map app like Grindr, SCRUFF or Sniffies works much faster.
