Match vs eHarmony: Which Is Better in 2026?
Match vs eharmony comes down to control: pick eharmony if you want marriage or a long-term partner and would rather have a compatibility quiz choose who you see; pick Match if you want to search and filter the pool yourself, start on a short plan, and talk to your matches before paying. Match is the cheaper and more flexible of the two, eharmony is the more structured and more expensive one.

How matching works on each
This is the real difference between the two sites. One asks you to do the choosing; the other does most of it for you.
eharmony: a quiz first, then a curated list
eharmony makes everyone take its Compatibility Quiz before matching starts. Its quiz page says it takes around 20 minutes and covers your personality, communication style, attitude to relationships and the boundaries you prefer, with some picture-pair questions. Your answers build a Personality Profile and a Compatibility Score from 60 to 140 shown on every match; eharmony calls 110 and up an “off-the-charts result”.
You then work through the people eharmony suggests rather than an open directory. You send Likes and a first message, and a mutual Like creates a match, as the App Store listing describes. Premium adds “enhanced search” and changing your search settings, according to eharmony’s cost page, but the site is built around its own suggestions. In my eharmony review the whole process, quiz plus profile, took about an hour, and I got fewer messages than on swipe apps, but better ones.
Match: browse, filter and reach out
Match works like a searchable catalog with recommendations on top. You build a detailed profile, set your preferences, then rate the profiles in your recommended stack, run searches and like people. Paid tiers widen this: Platinum adds unlimited search, advanced filters and read receipts, Diamond adds a filter by dating intent, according to Match’s package page. The trade-off is effort: nobody pre-sorts the pool for you. In my Match review I found that a fully completed profile got noticeably better matches than a thin one, and that match quality swung from great to random.
The rule of thumb: if decision fatigue is what killed online dating for you, eharmony removes most of the browsing. If you know exactly what you want (age, distance, kids, religion, height) and want to look for it yourself, Match gives you the controls.
What you get for free
Both sites are free to join, but the free versions are very different, and many comparisons are out of date on this point.
- Match free: Match’s help center now says “all of our free members are now able to chat with every match”. Once you and someone like each other, either of you can start the conversation for free. Free members can also rate up to 50 profiles a day in their recommended stack and see curated profiles. Older reviews (mine included) and some top-ranking pages still say you need to pay to message; that was true before this change.
- eharmony free (Basic): Basic has no time limit. After the quiz you can view profiles, send Likes and send a first message, says the cost page. The terms spell out the limits: Basic members generally see only blurred photos, can send unlimited predefined messages such as a smile, and have “only a limited ability to send and read personalized messages”. Turning off a Premium plan also means losing the ability to read and write custom messages and view photos, per its cancellation help page.
In practice, Match is the one you can genuinely test before paying. eharmony’s free tier tells you whether your matches look promising on paper, then asks you to pay to actually talk.
What each one really costs
Neither site prints a public price list. Match shows prices inside the app and at checkout; eharmony shows them only on its Subscription page after you log in. The closest thing to published prices is each app’s App Store listing.
| Match | eharmony | |
|---|---|---|
| App Store in-app purchases | $19.99, $42.99, $74.99, $129.99; 1 Month Basic $44.99; 1 Month Standard $44.99; 6 Month Bundle $129.99 | “eHarmony Basic” items $59.99 to $179.99; “PREMIUM light” items $179.99 to $349.99 (lengths not shown) |
| Add-ons | Boost $5.99, Top Spot $2.99, Top Spot 10-Pack $19.99 | Match Unlocks in some locations |
| Google Play price range | $0.99 to $299.99 per item | $4.49 to $399.99 per item |
| How you are billed | Full package charged at purchase; pick 1 month for monthly billing | Full term or installments; installments stay due if you cancel |
| Auto-renewal | All packages auto-renew | Plans renew for consecutive 12-month terms unless you agreed otherwise |
| Refunds | Generally non-refundable | No refund for unused days; 3-day cancellation right in 11 states |
Prices checked October 2026 on the Match and eharmony App Store listings and on Google Play. Billing rules from Match’s refund policy and eharmony’s terms.
What that means for your wallet:
- The cheapest way to try Match properly is the free tier first, then one month ($44.99 on the App Store) if you want the extras. The 6 Month Bundle at $129.99 works out to about $21.67 a month, but you pay it all on day one, and Match’s help center says the monthly figure shown at checkout is for comparison only.
- eharmony has no one-month option in its terms. Its terms list Premium light, Premium plus and Premium UNLIMITED in 6, 12 and 24-month terms, while its cost page says 3, 6 or 12 months: what you see at checkout is what counts. The cheaper plans let you message a limited number of matches through monthly Match Unlocks; UNLIMITED lets you talk to all of them.
- Watch the renewal on eharmony. Its terms say plans “automatically renew for consecutive 12 month terms” unless you agreed to another length at purchase, and auto-renewal must be cancelled at least 24 hours before your term ends. A 6-month plan you forget about can turn into a year.
- Introductory prices vary. Both companies run discounts that depend on location, age and timing. A low monthly figure quoted in a review is one person’s checkout, not a price you are guaranteed.
Who you will meet on each
Both sites aim at people who want a relationship, not a hookup, and both skew older than swipe apps. The difference is how they get there.
- Match has the bigger reach among older online daters. In a Pew Research Center survey (July 2022), 50% of online daters aged 50 and older had used Match, against 24% of those under 50. Across all ages, Match had been used by 31% of online daters and eharmony by about one in five, according to Pew’s key findings. Intent on Match is mostly serious, but you set a dating intention and others can be looking for something lighter.
- eharmony filters by effort: a 20-minute quiz and a multi-month plan put off people who are not serious. Pew found no significant differences in eharmony use between age groups within the 50-plus crowd. eharmony says it has helped over 2 million couples find love (App Store listing); it publishes no current US member count.
If you are over 50, both are on my shortlist of the best dating apps over 50, and for a wider list of sites built for commitment, see my serious dating sites page.
Numbers you will see elsewhere (and which to trust)
The pages ranking for this question disagree with each other, sometimes wildly. Here is what I could and could not confirm at the source:
- Member counts. Third-party pages give eharmony anywhere from 15.5 million to 66 million members and Match anywhere from 4 million to 21.5 million. Neither company publishes a current US member count on its pricing pages, help center or app listings. Treat these figures as guesses.
- Quiz length. Reviews say 72 questions and “32 dimensions” or “29 dimensions”. eharmony’s own pages say 70 questions on one page and both 80 and 39 on another. What is consistent: about 20 minutes, and you can save and finish later.
- “eharmony is behind 4% of US marriages.” This is repeated everywhere without a primary source I could open. I would not base a purchase on it.
- Super-low monthly prices. Figures like $3 a month for Match or $13.95 for eharmony are promotional checkouts that some reviewers saw. Neither company lists them, and your price can differ.
Safety and verification
Both are legitimate, long-running companies with real safety teams, and neither runs criminal background checks on every member. Their verification tools differ:
| Match | eharmony | |
|---|---|---|
| Photo verification | Yes: a video selfie with a liveness check and 3D face matching earns a “Photo Verified” status | No selfie verification; every photo is reviewed before it goes live |
| Phone verification | SMS verification | SMS Verified badge on your profile |
| ID checks | Optional ID verification in some markets; may ask for ID if an account looks fake | Not mentioned in its help pages or terms |
| Background checks | Not on all users; checks sex offender registries when it has enough information | “Does not currently conduct criminal background screenings” |
| Reporting | From a profile or chat: three dots, then Report | Trust and Safety team, Customer Care |
Sources: Match’s Photo Verification, safety policy and reporting articles; eharmony’s SMS Verification FAQ and terms. Checked October 2026.
On Match, ask for the Photo Verified status before you meet: it is the stronger signal of the two sites’ tools. On eharmony, the SMS badge only proves a phone number, so a quick video call before a first date is worth more. On both, the scam to watch for is the one Match’s own safety tips describe: someone who wants to move off the app fast, will not video call, and weeks later has an emergency, an investment tip or a plane ticket that needs money. Never send it. My online dating safety guide covers the red flags in more detail.
How to cancel each one
Cancelling stops the next renewal on both sites; it does not refund the term you are in, and deleting the app or your profile does not stop billing.
- Match: go to Settings, Manage Subscription, enter your password and turn off auto-renewal. If you subscribed through Apple, cancel in the App Store (profile icon, Subscriptions, Cancel Subscription); for Google, cancel in Google Play. Cancelling a free trial ends your access immediately. Steps from Match’s cancellation article.
- eharmony: on the web, click the arrow next to your photo, Data & settings, then Amend subscription (labeled Cancel auto renewal in the US). Do it at least 24 hours before your term ends. Apple and Google subscriptions are cancelled in the store. If you paid in installments, the remaining payments are still due. If you live in Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, New York, North Carolina, Ohio or Rhode Island, the terms give you until midnight of the third business day after purchase to cancel for a refund, by emailing subscriptions@eharmony.com.
Pros and cons
Match
- Free members can chat with every match
- Full search and filters, one-month plans
- Strongest pull among daters over 50 (Pew)
- Photo Verification with a video selfie
- You do the sorting, which takes time
- Four tiers plus add-ons make pricing confusing
- Generally non-refundable, every package auto-renews
- Mixed intent: not everyone wants marriage
eharmony
- Compatibility Quiz and score do the filtering for you
- Long sign-up and long plans put off casual daters
- Guided, lower-volume inbox
- 3-day cancellation right in 11 states
- Prices hidden until you log in
- No one-month plan; renewals run in 12-month terms
- Free tier: blurred photos, limited messaging
- Verification limited to SMS and photo review
Which should you pick?
| If you… | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Want marriage and hate endless browsing | eharmony | The quiz and score narrow the pool for you |
| Want to test before you pay | Match | Free members can chat with every match |
| Have specific must-haves (distance, kids, religion) | Match | Search and advanced filters on Platinum |
| Only want to pay for one month | Match | eharmony has no one-month plan in its terms |
| Are 50 or older | Match first, eharmony second | Half of online daters 50+ have used Match (Pew) |
| Live in a small town | Both, free, for two weeks | Count how many real, nearby profiles fit before paying |
| Want photo-verified matches | Match | Video-selfie Photo Verification; eharmony has SMS only |
The tie-breaker most people skip: before paying either one, use the free tier to count how many people in your age range and distance show up, and whether new faces keep appearing after a week. A big national brand means little if your local pool is thin.
If neither fits
If eharmony feels too slow and Match too much work, Hinge is the app people most often try next: detailed profiles, no long quiz, and age is a range you set rather than a cut-off. Hinge does not publish its gender ratio, so any figure you read is an estimate. I compare it with the big swipe app in Tinder vs Hinge. For eharmony-style matching with a professional crowd, read my EliteSingles review; for a 50-plus only site from the Match family, my OurTime review. All the head-to-heads live in my dating app comparisons.
Frequently asked questions
Is eharmony a legitimate dating platform?
Yes. eharmony has operated since 2000, is run by eHarmony, Inc., and has its app in both the App Store (4.1 stars from 49K ratings) and Google Play. It reviews every photo and offers an SMS Verified badge, but its terms say it does not run criminal background screenings, so verify matches yourself before meeting.
What is the average age of Match users?
Match does not publish an average age. Pew Research Center found in its 2022 survey that 50% of online daters aged 50 and older had used Match, against 24% of those under 50, so Match skews older than swipe apps like Tinder.
Can you message for free on Match or eharmony?
On Match, yes: its help center says all free members can now chat with every match. On eharmony, Basic members can send unlimited predefined messages such as a smile, but only have a limited ability to send and read personalized messages, and most photos stay blurred until you pay.
Is eharmony more expensive than Match?
Usually, yes. eharmony shows prices only after login and its terms list 6, 12 and 24-month plans; its App Store items run from $59.99 to $349.99. Match sells 1 to 12-month packages, with a one-month plan at $44.99 on the App Store (October 2026).
What are some alternatives to eharmony?
Match is the closest mainstream alternative if you want more control over who you see. EliteSingles also uses a personality test and targets professionals, OurTime is limited to people over 50, and Hinge suits people who want detailed profiles without a long quiz.
Is 40 too old for Hinge?
No. On Hinge, age is a range you and other daters set in your preferences, not a cut-off. If you are 40 or older and want something serious, Match and eharmony are also worth a look, since both skew older than most apps.
