Hornet Review 2026: Legit or Waste of Money?
The Hornet dating app is legit: a real gay social network run by Queer Networks Inc. since 2011, with a free tier you can genuinely use, selfie verification and clear cancellation rules. It is worth paying for only if you live or travel somewhere Hornet is busy, because outside its strongholds the grid is thin and fake profiles remain the top complaint. For most gay, bi, trans and queer men in the US, it works best as a free second app, not your main one.
What is Hornet, and who runs it?
Hornet is a location-based app for gay, bi, trans and queer men. You see a grid of guys nearby, chat by text, audio or video, and follow people whose posts you like in a social feed. Its About page says it was created in 2011, claims more than 100 million users in 150+ countries, and gives a more useful figure for advertisers: 2.5 million+ monthly active users worldwide.
The company behind it is Queer Networks Inc., the seller named on the App Store listing, and its terms of service say the service is offered by Queer Networks, Inc. of California. The same company runs two side products: Hornet Live, a separate live-streaming app, and HornetX, a map-based web platform that is not available in the US.
You can use Hornet on iPhone, Android or the web at hornet.com. Get it from the official stores or the website: the Aptoide and "unlocked APK" pages that show up in search are third-party copies, and nothing on Hornet's own pages points to them.
Who is the Hornet dating app for?
Hornet is 18+ only (21 where 18 is not the age of majority, per its terms). It suits:
- Gay, bi, trans and queer men who want dating, friends or casual meetups in one app.
- Travelers: Hornet says it is used in 150+ countries, and its paid Travel Mode lets you appear in another city before you land.
- Guys who want a community feed and LGBTQ+ news next to the grid, not just a list of torsos.
- Men who need discretion: a face photo is not required under its usage guidelines, as long as the photo is yours.
Skip it if you want a relationship-first app with prompts and long profiles, or if you are a woman looking for women: Hornet's grid is built for men.
How matching and messaging work
There is no swiping and no algorithmic match. You open the grid, see who is online near you, filter, and message whoever you like. The Google Play listing describes the core tools:
- Guys grid: profiles nearby, sorted by distance, with filters.
- Hashtags on profiles to find people with shared interests.
- Chat with text, audio messages, stickers, reactions and video chat.
- Private photos you share on request, with screenshot protection on paid tiers.
- Feed and posts: follow people and post photos, short videos and updates, which is what sets Hornet apart from a pure hookup grid.
Older articles say you can search the whole world for free. That has changed: Hornet's help center now says the free version limits how many profiles you can explore, and unlimited Explore needs Premium or Max.
Is Hornet free? Free vs Plus, Premium and Max
Yes, you can use Hornet for free: create a profile, browse a limited grid, message, follow and post. The paid side is split into three tiers, each billed monthly or yearly, bought in the app or on the web, according to Hornet's help center on Membership features and how to become a Member.
| Tier | What it adds |
|---|---|
| Free | Profile, limited grid, messaging, feed, blocking |
| Plus | No ads, unlimited photo uploads, screenshot prevention, typing indicator, read receipts, face verification |
| Premium | Everything in Plus, unlimited guys in the grid, worldwide Explore, all filters, who viewed you, invisible mode, expiring photos, message deletion, private galleries |
| Max | Everything in Premium, plus each month 5 Travel Modes, 5 Profile Boosts, 3 Moment Boosts, 3 Video Boosts and 180 minutes of video chat (unused extras expire at month end) |
Features from Hornet's help center. Prices checked October 2026.
What Hornet costs in 2026
Hornet does not publish a price list on its website, and its help center says membership prices are adjusted by country and that your renewal price is not guaranteed to match what you paid before. The closest thing to an official US price list is the in-app purchase list on the US App Store:
| Item as named on the App Store | Price (US) |
|---|---|
| Hornet Premium | $9.99, $13.99, $14.99, $19.99 or $39.99 (several listings) |
| Premium Membership 1 Month | $19.99 |
| 3 Months | $21.99 |
| 1 Year | $39.99 |
| Boost Profile for 1 Hour | $9.99 |
From the US App Store listing. Prices checked October 2026. Apple does not say which tier each line belongs to, so check the price on the paywall before you tap buy. On Android, Google Play lists in-app purchases from $0.99 to $199.99 per item.
What that means for you:
- Cheapest way in: stay free. If the ads or the limited grid bother you, the "1 Year" item at $39.99 works out to about $3.33 a month, against $19.99 for "Premium Membership 1 Month", but only commit once you know your area is active.
- Auto-renewal: memberships renew automatically, and Apple, Google or Stripe can charge you up to 24 hours before the new period starts.
- No haggling: support does not give individual discounts; promotions run around New Year and Black Friday.
- Boosts and Travel Mode last one hour each. A Profile Boost works only in select cities and is gone if you cancel it early. Travel Mode shows other users that you are using it.
Is there anyone on Hornet in the US?
This is the real question before you pay. Hornet's "100 million users" counts everyone who has ever signed up worldwide. Its own figure of 2.5 million+ monthly active users is the honest one, and those users are spread across 150+ countries. Google Play shows 10M+ downloads.
In the US, gay dating apps are a small slice of the market. In a Pew Research Center survey (July 2022), the most used dating apps among US online daters were Tinder (46%), Match (31%) and Bumble (28%), with Grindr at 6%. Hornet was not listed. The same survey found 51% of lesbian, gay or bisexual adults have used a dating site or app, against 28% of straight adults. So the audience is there, but in most US cities it is on Grindr first. Expect Hornet to feel busy in big metros and quiet in small towns, and check the free grid before you spend anything.
Safety and verification on Hornet
Hornet's safety tools are better documented than most. Its help center lists the verification types it uses:
- Blue checkmark: you copy a pose in a selfie, and staff compare it with your profile photos, most within 24 hours. You lose it if you remove every face photo. Hornet's own pages disagree on the cost: the checkmark guide mentions no plan, while the Membership page lists face verification as a Plus feature, so expect you may need Plus.
- SMS, liveness selfie and puzzle checks to stop bots, plus AI-assisted age checks in some regions.
- Location protection: the Safety Pledge says Hornet uses location obfuscation and anti-triangulation, and you can turn location services off.
- Privacy tools: private photos, screenshot prevention (Plus), invisible mode (Premium), blocking.
- Health: the Know Your Status feature lets you add your HIV status and testing date if you choose.
What it does not do: Hornet's Colorado safety disclosure says it does not routinely run criminal background checks on members. A blue checkmark proves the photos are the person's, not that he is safe to meet.
If privacy is your top concern (People Also Ask: "what are the most private dating apps?"), Hornet is a reasonable pick among gay apps: no face photo needed, location blurring, and a published pledge not to sell sensitive data. Note that its App Store privacy label still lists identifiers and usage data as data that may be used to track you across other companies' apps and websites.
Fake profiles and complaints
Ratings are middling. On the US App Store, Hornet has 3.8 out of 5 from 3.2K ratings. On Google Play it has 3.4 from 251K reviews, and the split is polarized: about 124,500 five-star reviews against about 80,400 one-star ones (October 2026). The featured App Store reviews (2019 to 2021) complain about fake profiles, romance scammers and spam. A Reddit thread in r/lgbt titled "Exposing the fraudulent practices of the Hornet" ranks for this search too; I could not open it, so I am not repeating its claims.
Hornet admits the problem in its own Spam and Scam Awareness Guide: it blocks thousands of scam profiles and says "some still get through". The patterns it warns about:
- Romance scams: a profile from overseas, staged photos, a heroic job (soldier on a mission, doctor abroad), fast declarations of love, a push to move to another messaging app, then an urgent money request or gift cards.
- "Sugar baby" scams: a too-good-to-be-true young profile asking for money in exchange for intimate photos, sometimes followed by blackmail threats. Do not pay; contact the police.
- Spam bots: messages pushing a link to "my profile" on another site. Do not click.
To report, use the right reason in the app: Fake Identity for someone using another person's photos, Image Violation for stolen internet photos, Commercial Ad for anyone selling something, and Offensive Profile or Abusive Use for abuse in chat, since moderators cannot read private chats. Never send money to someone you met on Hornet, and meet first in a public place after a video call.
Hornet Live: Honey and Diamonds
Hornet Live is a live-streaming side of the brand where viewers buy Honey to send gifts and hosts earn Diamonds they can withdraw. Hornet's payout policy now sets $1 at 600 Honey and gives hosts a 35% base revenue share. The terms say Honey, Diamonds and gifts are non-refundable and are lost if your account is deleted. It is optional, and you do not need it to date on Hornet.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Usable free tier: you can message without paying.
- Selfie verification with human review, plus bot and age checks.
- No face photo required, location blurring, invisible mode on Premium.
- Community feed and posts, not just a grid.
- Clear, dated help center on billing, cancelling and deleting.
Cons
- Thinner in many US areas than the market leader.
- Fake profiles and romance scammers are the most common complaint.
- No price list on the website, and renewal prices can change.
- Free grid and Explore are capped.
- Boosts and Travel Mode last only one hour each.
How to cancel Hornet and delete your account
You must cancel where you paid. Hornet's help center on cancelling a Membership gives these routes:

- iPhone: App Store, tap your profile picture, Subscriptions, Hornet, Cancel Subscription.
- Android, Google Play: Google Play, profile picture, Payments and subscriptions, Subscriptions, Hornet, Cancel subscription.
- Android, other payment: go to pay.google.com, Subscriptions and services, cancel Hornet.
- Web: your confirmation email says whether you paid through Stripe or Authorize. Log in on the matching site (hornet.com for Stripe in most countries), click your profile picture, Account, Cancel Subscription.
Paid features stay on until the end of the period. Then delete your account: Profile, the three-dot menu, Settings, Account, Delete Account. Deletion is permanent and removes photos and chats, but it does not cancel an active membership, so always cancel first.
Hornet alternatives
- Grindr (grindr.com): the same grid idea with a bigger US user base, the default choice if Hornet is quiet near you.
- Taimi: an LGBTQ+ app with dating and social features for all identities. In my Taimi review I rated it 4 out of 5.
- Adam4Adam: a long-running gay dating site with a free tier and a desktop site. See the Adam4Adam review.
- Hinge: if you want dates rather than a grid, it supports men seeking men with longer profiles. In my Hinge review I gave it 4.5.

How I rate it
I rate Hornet 3.5 out of 5. The rating is based on public pricing, features, safety tools, app store reputation and value, from Hornet's website, help center, terms and the App Store and Google Play listings checked in October 2026, not on hands-on use. Scores: value for money 3.5 (a real free tier, but prices vary and are not published), safety and verification 4 (selfie verification with human review, bot and age checks, a detailed scam guide, no background checks), evidence of an active user base 3 (2.5M+ monthly users worldwide, thinner in the US), features for its audience 4.5 (grid, feed, video chat, privacy tools, travel features), and transparency 3 (clear cancellation steps, but no public price list and renewal prices that can change).
Frequently asked questions
Is the Hornet dating app free?
Yes. You can create a profile, browse a limited grid, message, follow people and post for free. Paid tiers (Plus, Premium and Max) remove ads and unlock unlimited guys, worldwide Explore, all filters, who viewed you and invisible mode.
Is Hornet legit or full of fake profiles?
Hornet is a legit app run by Queer Networks Inc. since 2011, with selfie verification and bot checks. Fake profiles and romance scammers are still the most common complaint in app store reviews, and Hornet's own scam guide admits some get through, so look for the blue checkmark and never send money.
Is Hornet better than Grindr?
Hornet has a stronger community side, with a social feed and posts, and lets you skip a face photo. Grindr has the bigger US audience: Pew Research found 6% of US online daters had used Grindr, while Hornet was not listed. In most US cities, Grindr will show you more people nearby.
How do I cancel my Hornet subscription?
Cancel where you paid: the App Store on iPhone, Google Play or pay.google.com on Android, or the Account page of the Hornet web shop you bought from. Deleting the app or your account does not cancel the membership, and paid features stay on until the period ends.
What are the most private dating apps for gay men?
Look for apps that do not require a face photo, blur your exact location and offer invisible browsing. Hornet does all three: its guidelines allow a faceless photo, its Safety Pledge describes location obfuscation, and invisible mode comes with Premium.
Which dating apps do most people in the US use?
In Pew Research Center's 2022 survey, Tinder (46%), Match (31%) and Bumble (28%) were the most used dating apps among US online daters. Gay-focused apps are a smaller slice, with Grindr at 6%.
