Darkheart Review 2026: Legit or Waste of Money?
The DarkHeart dating app is a legit, small app for goth, alt and emo singles, run by DarkHeart LLC and live on both the App Store and Google Play. The catch is that it is not free: you have to buy a membership before you can browse a single profile, from $19.99 a week up to $99.99 for lifetime access. It is worth paying for only if you want a goth-only space and take a longer plan, because the weekly and monthly plans are expensive for a community this size.
What the DarkHeart dating app is and who runs it
DarkHeart describes itself as dating “for goth, alt, emo, and dark-romantic souls seeking connection with intention.” The developer is DarkHeart LLC, a US company with an address in Springfield, Illinois on its Google Play listing, and its terms are governed by Illinois law. The app was first released on December 10, 2024, so it is not yet two years old.
It is an app only: there is no desktop dating site. You can get it from the App Store (iPhone, iOS 17.5 or later) and from Google Play. The website at darkheart.app hosts a blog, city pages and the help pages. If you search for a “DarkHeart APK,” use Google Play instead: download mirrors are not where you want to hand over photos and payment.
Who DarkHeart is for
The app is built for people who live the subculture: trad goths, deathrock and darkwave fans, emo and alt kids who grew up, witchy and dark-academia types. Its listing speaks to queer users too, and since version 3.7.6 (September 2026) you can discover people of any gender, not just one. Members are adults only: the terms require you to be 18 or older, and the App Store rates it 18+.
It suits you if you are tired of explaining your style on mainstream apps, and you live in or near a city with a scene. It suits you less if you are in a small town, on a tight budget, or want to look around before paying. DarkHeart’s own FAQ admits that “some areas have fewer members nearby.”
How matching and messaging work
DarkHeart skips the swipe. You browse profiles that show photos, age, subculture tags (goth, alt, emo and more), interests and mood, and you filter by gender, distance, age and interests. When someone catches your eye, you send a Black Rose. If they accept, a private chat opens. If they decline, that is the end of it. The app frames it as consent first: “Desire can knock, but only consent opens the door.”
That design matters more than it sounds. Nobody can message you unless you said yes, which cuts down on the flood of unwanted openers women describe on bigger apps. Paid plans give you more Roses, and the Rose balance is tied to your account.
Beyond one-on-one chat there is a community side. Older descriptions, like the one most directories still copy, talk about a forum-style “Gothic Wall.” The current version (3.7.8, September 12, 2026) instead adds a photo Feed where members share pictures; its community guidelines say feed photos are moderated and deleted automatically after 7 days.
Is DarkHeart free? Plans and prices
No. Downloading is free, but DarkHeart is a membership app. Its FAQ answers the question “Why do I need to pay before using the app?” directly: after signup you see membership options “so you can browse and connect.” In a September 2026 reply on Google Play, the developer confirmed that “membership is currently required before browsing.” So there is no free tier where you can look around, only the onboarding.
The website does not publish prices (the FAQ says they are shown in the app and vary by store, region and promotions). The US App Store lists these in-app purchases:
| Plan | Price | Cost per month |
|---|---|---|
| Week | $19.99 | about $87 |
| Month | $39.99 | $39.99 |
| 3 Months | $34.99 | about $11.66 |
| Year | $79.99 | about $6.67 |
| Lifetime | $99.99 once | n/a |
| Profile Boost (24 hours) | $2.99 | add-on |
Prices checked October 2026 on the US App Store listing. Google Play does not show its price list publicly, and DarkHeart says prices can differ by store and promotion, so check the screen in the app before you tap buy.
Seen per month, the gap between plans is huge:

Two things stand out. The 3-month plan ($34.99) costs less than one month ($39.99), and the weekly plan works out to roughly $87 a month if it keeps renewing. Every subscription renews automatically for the same length at the then-current price unless you cancel, per DarkHeart’s terms. My advice: if you want to test it, the 3-month plan is the cheapest way in; the yearly plan or lifetime only make sense once you know there are people near you.
What paying gets you, per the store listing: access to browse and chat, more (unlimited) interactions and Roses, and the list of who viewed your profile. The Profile Boost puts you in front of more people for 24 hours.
Safety and verification
DarkHeart’s store listing says every new profile is manually reviewed and that “strict human moderation” keeps scammers and bots out. The terms add an automated layer: every uploaded photo is screened by AI models that check for a real human face, reject AI-generated images, drawings and explicit content, and try to detect minors. Human moderators review reports.
Here is the part the directory pages get wrong. They call DarkHeart profiles “verified,” and the homepage talks about a “verification system,” but the terms say plainly that DarkHeart does “not verify user identities, backgrounds, or intentions” and does not run background checks. Some store screenshots show a “Verified” badge, yet no DarkHeart help page explains how you earn it. So treat “manually reviewed” as a spam filter, not proof that the person is who they say.
The tools you do get:
- Consent-first chat: no message reaches you unless you accept their Rose.
- Block and Report from any profile or chat menu. Reports can cover fake profiles, spam, harassment and conduct that started on the app and continued elsewhere.
- Timed suspensions: when enough different users report an account, it is locked for 5 minutes, then 30 minutes, 1 hour and 24 hours, before manual review or a ban. Child-safety violations skip straight to removal.
- Hide Profile to go invisible while keeping your matches, and Snooze for notifications.
The usual rules still apply: keep the chat in the app until you have video-called, meet in public, tell a friend where you are going, and never send money to someone you have not met. DarkHeart bans promoting services and commercial sex, so report anyone who tries to sell you something or move you to another platform fast.
Fake profiles, complaints and ratings
On the App Store, DarkHeart has 4.4 stars from about 1,100 ratings, and on Google Play 4.2 stars from 290 reviews with 5,000+ downloads (October 2026). Those are respectable scores, but the written reviews tell a different story from the stars, and that gap is worth knowing about:
- The paywall comes at the end of signup. The most common complaint is building a profile, uploading photos, then hitting a screen with no way to continue without paying. Several reviewers call it a scam for that reason. It is a business model, not a scam, but it is a real downside.
- You cannot check local activity first. One Google Play reviewer asked to see if anyone is around before paying; the developer replied that membership is required before browsing.
- Location bugs. An App Store reviewer in late 2025 reported the distance filter greyed out even with location on; the developer said it would look into it.
- Doubts about the star rating. One App Store reviewer argued the many wordless 5-star ratings did not match the mostly negative written reviews. That is an accusation I cannot verify either way, but it is a good reason to read the written reviews, not just the stars.
To its credit, the developer answers almost every review, publicly and politely. On the size question, the honest picture is small: 5,000+ Android downloads, around 1,100 iPhone ratings, and an Android usage rank of #1,094 in the US Social category on Similarweb (October 2026). DarkHeart’s pages say “thousands of goth singles,” which fits those numbers. Spread across the world, that is thin in most towns.
Pros and cons
Pros
- A real goth, alt and emo community instead of a filter inside a mainstream app.
- Consent-first Black Rose system: nobody can message you uninvited.
- Manual review of new profiles, AI photo screening and a clear reporting ladder.
- Long plans are cheap: about $6.67 a month on the yearly plan, or $99.99 once.
- Clear help pages on cancelling, refunds and deleting your data, and an active, responsive developer.
Cons
- No free tier: you pay before seeing a single profile.
- Small user base, so few or no people near you outside big cities.
- The weekly plan costs about $87 a month if it renews.
- No identity verification, despite “verified” wording in some places.
- Prices are not on the website, only in the app and on the App Store.
How to cancel DarkHeart and delete your account
Cancelling and deleting are two separate steps, and the order matters. DarkHeart’s billing help page warns that deleting your account does not cancel your subscription, and you may keep getting charged.

- Cancel on iPhone: open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions, pick DarkHeart and tap Cancel Subscription (Apple’s steps).
- Cancel on Android: open the Google Play Store, tap your profile, then Payments & subscriptions, Subscriptions, DarkHeart, Cancel subscription.
- Keep access until the end: you can use the app until the paid period ends.
- Delete the account: in the app, go to Profile, tap the Settings icon, then Account and Delete Account, and confirm. Per DarkHeart’s deletion page, your profile, photos, matches, chats and Rose balance are gone for good; transaction records are kept for 7 years and backups for up to 30 days.
Refunds are handled by Apple or Google, not DarkHeart, and are at the store’s discretion, per its refunds page. If you only want a break, Hide Profile keeps your matches while making you invisible.
DarkHeart alternatives
- AltScene: a long-running website for goths, emos, punks and metalheads that calls itself 100% free, with free unlimited messages. Dated, but the obvious first stop if you will not pay upfront.
- OkCupid: a big, free-to-message app where detailed profiles and questions let your music and style show; good in towns where DarkHeart is empty.
- Boo: personality-type matching with interest communities, handy if you want depth over looks.
- Feeld: for open-minded and alternative people exploring different identities or relationship styles.
- HER and Taimi: if you are queer and want an LGBTQ+ space first.

How I rate it
My 2.5 out of 5 is based on public pricing, features, safety tools, app store reputation and value, not on hands-on use. Value for money 2 (no free tier and an expensive weekly plan, though the yearly plan is cheap at about $6.67 a month), safety and verification 3 (manual profile review, AI photo screening, consent-first chat and a reporting ladder, but no identity verification), evidence of an active user base 2 (5,000+ Android downloads and about 1,100 iPhone ratings, with the company itself warning of few members in some areas), features for its audience 3.5 (Black Rose, subculture tags, photo feed, any-gender discovery), transparency 2.5 (clear cancel, refund and deletion pages, but prices hidden from the website and the paywall revealed only at the end of signup). Average 2.6, rounded to 2.5.
Frequently asked questions
Is DarkHeart a good dating app?
DarkHeart is a legit app with a good idea: a goth, alt and emo community where chat opens only when someone accepts your Black Rose. Its weak points are a small user base and a paywall before you can browse. It is worth trying on a 3-month or yearly plan if you live near a goth scene.
Is the DarkHeart dating app free?
No. The download is free, but DarkHeart requires a paid membership before you can browse or chat. On the US App Store, plans run from $19.99 a week and $39.99 a month to $79.99 a year or $99.99 for lifetime access (October 2026).
Is DarkHeart available on Android?
Yes. DarkHeart is on Google Play as well as the App Store, with 5,000+ Android downloads as of October 2026. Install it from Google Play rather than an APK mirror site, so updates and billing go through the store.
What is the most secretive dating app?
No dating app is truly secret, since your profile is visible to other members. On DarkHeart you can use Hide Profile to go invisible while keeping your matches, and nobody can message you unless you accept their Rose.
Which dating app is the least scammy?
Apps that review profiles, screen photos and let you control who can message you tend to have fewer scams. DarkHeart manually reviews new profiles and uses consent-first chat, but it does not verify identities, so keep chats in the app and never send money to a match.
What is the #1 dating app right now?
Tinder, Hinge and Bumble are the best-known mainstream dating apps in the US. DarkHeart is a niche app, so it will never match their size, but it gives goth and alt singles a space where they do not have to explain themselves.
