Dateability Review 2026: Legit or Waste of Money?

The Dateability dating site is legit: it is a real app and web app built by Dateability, Inc. in Denver for disabled and chronically ill singles, and the free tier already includes unlimited swipes, likes, matches and messages. It is not a waste of money either, because the paid upgrade costs $4.99 a month. The catch is size: with 10K+ downloads on Google Play, the pool near you may be tiny, so treat it as a second app next to a mainstream one unless you live in a big city.

My verdict: Legit, kind and cheap. Start free, fill in Dateability Deets only as far as you are comfortable, get the verified badge, and only pay for Dateability+ if you have more likes than you can sort or you need filters by disability or values. Best for disabled and chronically ill adults who are tired of explaining themselves on Tinder; skip it as your only app if you live somewhere rural and want to meet in person soon.

What is Dateability, and who runs it?

Dateability calls itself “the only dating app created by and for disabled & chronically ill people”. Its About page says it was founded in 2022 by sisters Jacqueline and Alexa Child, who are co-founders and co-CEOs. Jacqueline is disabled due to chronic illness and started it after running into ableism and offensive comments on mainstream apps. The legal company is Dateability, Inc., 1312 17th Street, Denver, Colorado, per its terms and conditions (last updated January 1, 2026).

You can use it on iPhone, Android and the web at dateabilityapp.com. Google Play lists the first release on October 10, 2022 and the latest update on August 4, 2026, so it is actively maintained. It has had a lot of press (People, The Washington Post, CBS Mornings, BBC, and a New York Times feature in August 2026), which tells you it is real, not that it is busy near you.

Who the Dateability dating site is for

    • Good fit: adults with physical, intellectual or psychiatric disabilities or chronic illness who want to skip the “so what’s wrong with you” conversation. The Dateability FAQ says non-disabled people may join too, as long as they respect the community.
    • LGBTQIA+ daters: welcome, and you can set who you are interested in. If that is your main need, see also my LGBTQ+ dating sites guide.
    • Location: the FAQ lists 21 countries, including the US, Canada, the UK, Australia and much of Western Europe. The app is English only.
    • Not for: anyone under 18 (the FAQ and terms require 18+; Google Play rates it Mature 17+ while the App Store says 18+, and the terms are what count), and anyone who fetishizes disability. Dateability’s safety page says “devotees” are not allowed.

    How matching and messaging work

It works like a swipe app with a gentler setup. You build a profile with 4 to 6 photos, basics such as pronouns, religion, politics and education, what you are looking for (from friendship to monogamy or polyamory), and an optional section called Dateability Deets: a long list of terms such as wheelchair user, chronic pain, deaf, immunocompromised or service animal. Deets are always optional, and the safety page suggests keeping anything beyond broad descriptors private until you trust someone.

    • Search tab: Like (heart), X or Skip. Per the FAQ, X’d profiles come back after 30 days and skipped ones right away.
    • Matching: Dateability uses a compatibility algorithm, and people outside your radius can appear if the score is high. Everyone, free or paid, can search within up to 500 miles or across the whole app, and a “Location Dealbreaker” toggle limits you to your area.
    • Messaging: you can only chat once you have both liked each other. Nobody sees that you liked them until they like you back.
    • Likes list: free users see the people who liked them one at a time, oldest first, and must decide on each before seeing the next. There is no cap on how many you can answer.
    • Sparks: a Spark puts you unlocked at the top of someone’s Likes list, whatever their plan.

    Accessibility features

This is Dateability’s strongest point. Members can add image descriptions (alt text) to every profile photo, which the FAQ explains for people who cannot see images or have a sensory processing disorder, and the company posts YouTube tutorials for each feature. On the App Store, the developer lists support for VoiceOver, Voice Control, Larger Text and Reduced Motion. Profiles also ask for vaccination status, which matters if you or your date is immunocompromised.

Free vs Dateability+: plans and prices

Dateability says it will always have a free version. Here is what each tier gets, from the FAQ and the App Store in-app purchase list.

    PlanPriceWhat you get
Free$0Unlimited swipes, likes, matches and messages; age, gender and location filters (up to 500 miles or all); locked Likes list (one at a time)
Dateability+ monthly$4.99 / monthFilters by Deets, verification status, interests, religion, politics, education and more; full Likes list sorted newest first; 3 Sparks per week
    Dateability+ annual$54.99 / yearSame as monthly
    Sparks (à la carte)1 for $0.99, 10 for $6.99, 30 for $16.99Jump to the top of someone’s Likes list

Prices checked October 2026 on the App Store listing and the Dateability FAQ. Google Play shows in-app items from $0.99 to $54.99. You must first subscribe from the iPhone or Android app; the web app cannot sell the subscription, but Dateability+ then works on the web when you log in with the same account.

    What Dateability actually costs

None of the pages that rank for Dateability does the math, so here it is:

    • Cheapest way in: free. Messaging is never behind a paywall, which is rare. Most people never need to pay.
    • Annual vs monthly: $54.99 a year works out to $4.58 a month. Twelve months at $4.99 is $59.88, so the annual plan saves you about $5. Only take it if you know you will stay a year.
    • Sparks: $0.99 each on their own, about $0.70 each in the 10-pack and about $0.57 in the 30-pack. Dateability+ includes 3 a week, but the FAQ warns they expire each week if you do not use them. Twelve Sparks a month for $4.99 beats buying them, if you would send them anyway.
    • Auto-renewal: both store listings say the plan renews automatically unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the current period ends.
    • Refunds: the FAQ says Dateability does not offer refunds; payments and refund requests go through Apple or Google. If Dateability removes your account, the Acceptable Use Policy says you get no refund. UK users get a 14-day withdrawal right under the terms.

Is Dateability safe? Verification and what it does not check

Dateability offers an optional verified badge. Per the FAQ, you go to your profile, tap “Verify Profile” and submit 3 photos copying example poses; the team compares them with your profile photos. The selfies are not public, and if you change your profile photos, you can lose the badge. A 2024 user review on Bezzy noted that the verify step offered help for people who cannot take a selfie because of their condition. Paid members can filter by verification status.

What it does not do matters just as much. The safety page says in capitals that Dateability does not conduct criminal background checks or identity verification, and makes no guarantee about who users are. The Acceptable Use Policy bans fake identities, lying about your age, commercial use and anyone currently incarcerated or convicted of certain sexual or violent crimes, and lets you appeal a ban by email.

Its own safety advice is the right one: never send money to anyone, be wary of long-distance matches who refuse a phone or video call, run a reverse image search on photos that look off, keep your last name, address and routine private, and meet in public and get there on your own. To report someone, use the report or block button at the bottom of their profile (you must give a reason), or email contact@dateabilityapp.com about discriminatory language or harassment. The safety page also lists US hotlines, from the National Domestic Violence Hotline (800-799-7233) to the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.

Fake profiles, complaints and the small pool

The ratings tell a clear story. On the App Store, Dateability has 3.9 stars from 101 ratings; on Google Play, 3.3 stars from 281 reviews and 10K+ downloads (both October 2026). That is a very small app next to the giants.

The recurring complaints in the store reviews are not about scams. They are about size and bugs: “there’s not enough people” (a reviewer in Utah), seeing “the same 30 people” over and over, crashes, slow photo loading and phantom notifications. The Bezzy reviewer, writing in 2024 from a big metro area, found only a couple of profiles near her after three weeks and made her real connections with people in other states. She also saw the usual suspected troll accounts. So: the people are mostly real, but there may be few of them where you live.

Should you use it? A quick decision guide

    • You are disabled or chronically ill and tired of ableist messages: join free, today. It is the main reason the app exists.
    • You live in a small town or rural area: use it alongside a bigger app, set the radius to “All”, and be open to long-distance chats and video calls first.
    • You get more likes than you can sort, or you need dealbreaker filters (Deets, politics, verification): Dateability+ monthly at $4.99 is fair. Skip the annual plan until you have used it for a while.
    • You are a non-disabled partner looking to date someone disabled: you may join, but the community rules are strict, and inappropriate demands get you deleted.
    • You want to meet someone this week: a mainstream app will give you more people; see below.

    Pros and cons

    • Built by and for disabled and chronically ill people, with optional Deets
    • Free tier includes unlimited likes, matches and messages
    • Cheap upgrade: $4.99 a month or $54.99 a year
    • Real accessibility work: photo alt text, VoiceOver and Voice Control support
    • Devotees banned, verified badge, clear safety page
    • Small user base: 10K+ Android downloads and few people in many areas
    • Store reviews report bugs, crashes and the same profiles repeating
    • No ID or background checks; the badge is a photo match only
    • Subscriptions can only start in the phone app, and there are no refunds
    • English only

How to cancel Dateability+ and delete your account

Deleting or pausing your account does not stop the subscription, so cancel first. The Dateability FAQ gives these steps:

    1. iPhone: Settings, your name, Subscriptions, Dateability, Cancel.
    2. Android: Google Play, your profile picture, Payments & subscriptions, Subscriptions, Dateability, Cancel subscription. You can also tap “Manage Subscription” in the app’s Account tab.
    3. Do it at least 24 hours before renewal. Dateability+ stays active until the end of the period you paid for.
    4. Delete: Account, scroll down, Delete Account. Your account is permanently deleted after 7 days; log back in before then to undo.
    5. Pause instead: Account, Deactivate Account hides you from everyone and keeps your profile until you log back in.
Flowchart: cancel Dateability+ in iPhone Settings or Google Play first, then delete the account, which is final after 7 days
Steps from Dateability’s FAQ, checked October 2026.

Name or birthday wrong? You cannot change them yourself; the FAQ says to email contact@dateabilityapp.com.

    Dateability alternatives

Because the disability-focused pool is small, most people pair Dateability with a mainstream app that has more users nearby:

    • Hinge: prompts give you room to explain your life in your own words before anyone likes you, and it suits people who want a relationship.
    • OkCupid: long profiles and many questions, useful if you want to filter for values before disclosing anything health-related.
    • Bumble: a big, relationship-leaning app with its own rules on who makes the first move; my review explains how they work now.

For more relationship-minded options, see my serious dating apps list, or browse all my reviews.

    How I rate it

I give Dateability 3.5 out of 5. That rating is based on public pricing, features, safety tools, app store reputation and value, not on hands-on use. Value for money: 4 (messaging is free and the upgrade costs $4.99). Safety and verification: 3 (optional photo verification, devotee ban and clear reporting, but no ID or background checks). Evidence of an active user base: 2.5 (10K+ downloads and fewer than 400 ratings across both stores, with repeated complaints about the small pool). Features for its audience: 4.5 (Deets, photo alt text and screen reader support are rare). Transparency: 4 (prices, auto-renewal, cancellation and the no-refund rule are all spelled out in the FAQ and store listings).

    Frequently asked questions

    How much does Dateability cost?

Dateability is free to join and free users get unlimited swipes, likes, matches and messages. Dateability+ costs $4.99 a month or $54.99 a year on the App Store, and Sparks cost $0.99 each or $6.99 for 10 and $16.99 for 30 (October 2026). Subscriptions renew automatically unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the period ends.

    Is Dateability safe?

It has sensible safety tools: an optional photo-verified badge, report and block buttons, a ban on devotees who fetishize disability, and a clear safety page. But its own safety page says it does not run criminal background checks or identity verification. Never send money to a match and meet in public the first few times.

    Is Dateability free?

Yes. The FAQ says there will always be a free version, and messaging is never paywalled. Dateability+ only adds detailed filters, a full Likes list sorted newest first and 3 Sparks a week.

Is there a Dateability website, or only an app?

Both. Dateability runs on iPhone, Android and the web at dateabilityapp.com. You have to start a Dateability+ subscription from the phone app, but it then works on the web with the same account.

What is the best disability dating site?

Dateability is the best-known app built by and for disabled and chronically ill people, and it is free to message. Its pool is small, so many people use it alongside a larger mainstream app such as Hinge or OkCupid.
