BLK Review 2026: Legit or Waste of Money?
BLK is a legit dating app, not a scam: it is a big, actively updated swipe app for Black singles, run by Match Group Americas, with 4.6 stars from 556K App Store ratings and 5M+ Google Play downloads (October 2026). BLK dating app reviews are split, though: plenty of people meet someone, while a loud minority complains about fake profiles, paywalled likes and bans with no explanation. Use it free first, and only pay once you see real, nearby people.
What BLK is and who runs it
BLK is a phone dating app for iPhone and Android that calls itself “the #1 Dating app made for Black Singles”. Its App Store listing describes the mission as creating “an exclusive community where Black men and Black women can find meaningful connections”. The official website now focuses on BLK Events, in-person mixers, more than on the app itself.
Who is behind it matters for the “is it legit” question. The BLK Terms of Use say the service is “operated by Match Group Americas, LLC”, with a business address in Dallas, Texas. The App Store lists the seller as Affinity Apps, LLC. That makes BLK a sister app of Match Group brands such as Tinder, Hinge and Plenty of Fish, and it explains a detail that confuses some users: one developer reply on the App Store sends a complaining user to the POF help center.
The app is maintained. The App Store shows version 12.17.1 released October 2, after updates on September 16 and September 30, and the Google Play listing was updated October 7, 2026, where it also ranks #10 top grossing in dating.
Who BLK is for (and who should skip it)
BLK suits Black men and women who want to date within the Black community and live somewhere with a decent local pool: big metro areas especially. It works for casual dating and for relationships, since nothing in the app forces one or the other. Both store listings and every screenshot are built around Black singles.
Can people who are not Black join? Yes. Nothing in the terms limits sign-up by race; the requirements are being 18 or older and not being barred from the service. Several App Store reviews complain about exactly that, calling the branding misleading when non-Black users are on the app. If you want a space that is explicitly for interracial dating, BLK is not built for that; see the alternatives below.
Skip BLK if you live in a small town (reviewers describe a “dry” pool and matches 150 to 500 miles away), if you want detailed profiles with fields like kids, religion or height, or if you will not tolerate the occasional scam profile.
How matching and messaging work on BLK
BLK works like Tinder. You build a short profile (photos, a short bio, school and work are optional), set who you want to see, then swipe through a daily list of profiles: right (or the heart) for “Yeah”, left (or the X) for “Nah”. If both people like each other, it is a match and you can chat in the app. Free members can chat with anyone who liked them back, per the App Store description.
You can add self-expression stickers to your profile, and the Google Play listing says you can search and match on shared stickers. Super Likes and “Really Likes” let you stand out to someone before they have liked you, and a Boost puts you among the top profiles in your area for 30 minutes.
The weak spot is depth. App Store and user-review complaints repeat the same point: profiles can be just a name, an age and one photo, because the app does not ask the questions other relationship apps ask. Two other recurring complaints are that the distance setting gets ignored after a while and that gender preferences are not always respected; BLK’s developer replies ask users to update the app and contact the help center.
Is BLK free? What you get without paying
Yes, BLK is free to download and to use. Both store listings end with the same line: “If you don’t choose to purchase a subscription, you can simply continue to use BLK.” Free members can create a profile, swipe, match and chat with matches.
The limits are where the money is. Free members have a cap on likes (an App Store reviewer calls it “a pretty generous limit”, others hit it fast), cannot rewind an accidental pass, and cannot see who already liked them. That last one drives most of the anger in BLK reviews: the app shows you have new likes and asks you to pay to see them. Some users say the likes were few, far away or fake once they paid; others say they were real. You cannot check before you buy, so treat the like counter as marketing, not as a promise.
There is no advertised free trial in either store listing. A free way to “see” a like: keep swiping, because anyone who liked you becomes a match the moment you like them back.
BLK prices in 2026: Premium, Elite and Platinum
BLK’s Subscription Package Options page lists three paid tiers, each sold for 1 week, 1 month, 3 months or 6 months:
- Premium: unlimited likes and rewinds, 5 Super Likes per week, 1 Boost each month, no ads (Premium Tier FAQ).
- Elite: everything in Premium, plus See Who Likes You and sorting your likes by Your Type, Last Active and Nearby (Elite Tier FAQ).
- Platinum: everything in Elite, plus extra swiper filters, Priority Likes and message read receipts.
BLK does not publish a price grid. Both store listings say subscriptions start at $9.99, and the App Store shows these in-app purchases:
| Purchase (App Store name) | Price |
|---|---|
| Subscriptions, starting price | $9.99 |
| Elite, 1 week | $17.99 or $19.99 |
| Elite, 1 month | $19.99 or $29.99 |
| Boost, 1 pack | $2.99 or $3.99 |
| Really Like, 5 pack | $2.99 |
| Super Like, 5 pack | $4.99 |
Prices checked October 2026 on the US App Store listing. Several prices appear twice because BLK runs different offers at once; the terms say pricing varies by region, plan length, past purchases and account activity, and that BLK “regularly test[s]” prices. Platinum and Premium prices are not listed by name.
The detail that matters: a one-week Elite plan can cost $19.99, the same as some one-month Elite plans. A week is the worst deal on the menu. If you want to see who liked you, buy one month, check the screen price before you confirm, and turn off auto-renewal right away if you only want that month.
One more thing the listings disagree on. Google Play says Premium lets you “send over 100 Super Likes per month”, while the App Store and the help center say 5 per week, which is about 20 a month. I would plan on the help center figure, since two of BLK’s three sources agree on it.
BLK dating app reviews: ratings, fake profiles and complaints
On the App Store, BLK has 4.6 out of 5 stars from 556K ratings; on Google Play, 4.2 stars from about 138K ratings and 5M+ downloads (October 2026). That is far more reviews than most niche dating apps ever collect, and a strong sign the user base is real and large.
The written reviews tell a more mixed story. The patterns that show up again and again, on the App Store and on user-review aggregators:
- Success stories: users who say they met a long-term partner, some together for years.
- Fake and scam profiles: one-photo profiles with no bio, people who push you to WhatsApp or Hangouts, “military” or overseas profiles, and requests for money.
- Paywalled likes: a pile of likes right after sign-up that dries up, or turns out to be far away, after paying.
- Bans without explanation: accounts disabled or bios blocked, with customer care declining to say what rule was broken.
- Slow support and billing problems: paid features that did not unlock and replies that took days.
On bans, the terms back BLK’s side: they say BLK “may not share information with you regarding your account termination” if it could affect other users’ safety, that banned users get no refund, and that you may not create a new account after a ban. The community guidelines also ban posting phone numbers, social handles and payment app usernames in your profile, which is the reason given in several “banned for no reason” stories. Keep contact details out of your bio.
Safety and verification on BLK
BLK has two safety layers worth knowing about. The first is Face Check. BLK’s Face Check FAQ says it is “requiring that users complete a biometric Face Check scan with a video selfie”, used to estimate age, check that your profile photos match your face, reduce fraud and stop other profiles from using your likeness. Pass it and upload a clear solo photo, and you get a Photo Verified badge. Prefer people with that badge.
The privacy trade-off: the video itself is deleted, but BLK keeps your face data for the life of the account and deletes it within 30 days of closing it, and keeps two audit images until 90 days after closing (one year if you were banned). The only way to delete that data is to delete your account.
The second layer is moderation. BLK’s safety tips say messages go through “Safe Message Filters”: automated tools scan conversations, and trained agents review reported chats and can ban members or alert law enforcement.
What BLK does not do: section 10 of the terms says plainly that “BLK does not conduct criminal background or identity verification checks on its users.” A Photo Verified badge proves a face matches the photos, not who the person is or what their history looks like.
The practical rules, from BLK’s own tips and the FTC’s romance scam advice:
- Never send money, gift cards or crypto to a match, whatever the emergency.
- Be wary of anyone who is “stuck” overseas, in the military abroad, or who will not video chat.
- Stay in the BLK chat until you have met; scammers rush you to text or other apps.
- Meet in a public place, tell a friend, and control your own ride home.
- Report fake profiles and money requests from the profile page or the chat window.
BLK Events: meeting in person
BLK now runs in-person events. The BLK Events site lists mixers and partner events in New York, Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Chicago, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Washington DC, Miami and Detroit. You can save a spot with just a name and an email, no account needed, then use the app to chat with confirmed attendees before you go. If online swiping feels dry where you live, an event is a lower-risk way to meet BLK members face to face.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Large, real user base: 556K App Store ratings and 5M+ Android downloads.
- Free members can match and chat.
- Run by Match Group, with Face Check photo verification and message moderation.
- In-person events in 10 big US cities.
- Frequent app updates.
Cons
- Seeing who liked you needs Elite, and the like counter is the main sales pitch.
- Recurring complaints about scam and fake profiles.
- Thin profiles and a distance filter users say gets ignored.
- Bans with no explanation and no refund.
- No published price grid; one-week plans cost almost as much as a month.
- No criminal background or ID checks.
How to cancel BLK and delete your account
Every BLK subscription renews automatically until you cancel, and canceling keeps your paid features until the end of the period, after which you go back to a free account (Cancel Your Subscription).
- iPhone: Settings, tap your name, Subscriptions, BLK, Cancel Subscription (Apple’s steps are here). In the app you can also go to Profile, the gear icon, Manage Subscription.
- Android: Google Play, your profile icon, Payments and subscriptions, Subscriptions, BLK, Cancel (Google’s steps).
- Delete the account: in the app, go to Profile, the gear icon, then “Delete account”, per section 9 of the terms.
Order matters: deleting your profile does not stop an App Store or Google Play subscription. Cancel the subscription first, then delete.
Refunds: the terms say purchases are “generally” nonrefundable. Subscribers in Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Rhode Island and Wisconsin can cancel for a full refund before midnight of the third business day after subscribing. If you paid through Apple, the refund request goes to Apple, not BLK. Super Likes, Boosts and other virtual items are never refundable.
BLK alternatives
- Hinge: the pick for a serious relationship, with richer profiles than BLK.
- Bumble: a large mainstream pool where women message first.
- Tinder: the same swipe format as BLK with a much bigger pool, but no Black-community focus.
- AfroRomance and Swirlr: sites built for interracial dating, if that is what you are after.

How I rate it
My 3.5 out of 5 is based on public information checked in October 2026: BLK’s store listings, help center, terms and safety pages, and its App Store and Google Play reputation, not on hands-on use. On the five criteria I score every app on: value for money 3 (real free tier, but the key feature sits behind Elite), safety and verification 3.5 (Face Check and moderation, no background checks, persistent scam complaints), evidence of an active user base 4.5 (hundreds of thousands of ratings, top-grossing, frequent updates), features for its audience 3.5 (community focus and events, thin profiles), and transparency 3 (auto-renewal and cancellation are explained, but there is no price grid and the listings contradict each other).
Frequently asked questions
How much does the BLK app cost?
BLK is free to download and use. Paid plans (Premium, Elite and Platinum) start at $9.99 according to both app stores, and the US App Store lists Elite at $19.99 to $29.99 a month and $17.99 to $19.99 a week in October 2026. Prices vary by offer, so check the payment screen before you confirm.
Do you have to pay to see who likes you on BLK?
Yes. See Who Likes You is part of Elite and Platinum, not the free version or Premium. The free workaround is to keep swiping: anyone who already liked you becomes a match as soon as you like them back.
Can white people use BLK?
Yes. BLK is marketed to Black singles, but its terms do not restrict who can join by race; you must be 18 or older. Some App Store reviewers complain about non-Black users for that reason. If you want a site built for interracial dating, an app made for that is a better fit.
Which is better, Tinder or BLK?
Tinder has the bigger pool and works almost everywhere, while BLK gives you a community built around Black singles with the same swipe format. Both are Match Group apps. If you mainly want to date within the Black community in a city, BLK is worth trying alongside a mainstream app.
Why am I not getting any likes on BLK?
Common reasons are a thin profile, a small local pool or a profile that has not been photo verified. Add several clear solo photos, complete Face Check to get the Photo Verified badge and write a real bio. A Boost puts you among the top profiles in your area for 30 minutes if you want more visibility.
What is the least scammy dating app?
No dating app is scam-free, BLK included. Prefer apps with photo or selfie verification and in-app reporting, and never send money to someone you have not met. The FTC says a request for money from an online match is the clearest sign of a romance scam.
