BlackGentry Review 2026: Legit or Waste of Money?

BlackGentry is a legit dating app, not a scam: it is a members-only app for ambitious, relationship-minded Black singles, run by ZeelTech LLC in Atlanta, with 4.7 stars from 27K App Store ratings and 500K+ Google Play downloads (October 2026). The free version is worth trying because chatting with matches costs nothing. Paying is a closer call: prices are not published per plan, every purchase is non-refundable, and recent Android reviews describe few active profiles after upgrading.

My verdict: A real, actively maintained app with a clear niche and a manual approval step that most Black dating apps skip. Try it free first, check how many active people are near you, and if you upgrade, buy one month at a time. It is a 3 out of 5 for me: good idea, thin transparency.

What is BlackGentry, and who runs it?

BlackGentry describes itself as “a members-only dating app designed for ambitious and intentional singles”. Its Google Play listing states its mission as making it “easier for Black singles to establish healthier connections and relationships”, with four community values: kindness, respect, integrity and growth.

The company behind it is ZeelTech LLC, a Georgia company. Google Play lists its address as 1445 Woodmont Ln NW, Atlanta, GA 30318, with a US phone number and a support email at contact@blackgentryapp.com. The official website says the app launched in 2020. It is a phone app only: one version for iPhone on the App Store and one for Android on Google Play. There is no desktop site where you can log in and date.

The app is alive and updated often. The App Store shows version 3.30.146 released on September 22, after more than 20 updates since May, and the Google Play listing was updated on October 12, 2026.

Who BlackGentry is for (and who should skip it)

BlackGentry suits Black singles who want a serious relationship, who like the idea of a vetted community, and who care about career and ambition in a partner. The “Professionals” section, where members verify their LinkedIn profile, is aimed squarely at people who want to date someone with a similar professional life.

One detail many people miss: the current App Store description no longer says the app is only for Black singles. It now reads “BlackGentry is open to everyone”, while the Google Play text still talks about Black singles. In practice the branding, the screenshots and the community are built around Black daters, so if that is not what you want, look elsewhere.

Two more things to know before you download. Both store listings note that the images and videos in their marketing “may be AI-generated or feature models” and do not show real users. And the App Store rates it 18+ while Google Play rates it Mature 17+; the Terms of Service are clear that the service is only for people 18 and older.

Skip it if you live in a small town (some reviewers say the local pool is thin), if you want a large casual pool, or if you are not willing to wait in a queue before you can use the app.

The waitlist: how getting accepted works

You download the app, build a profile and submit it as an application. It goes on a waitlist and a “membership committee” reviews it. The App Store listing says the committee prioritizes “detailed, polished profiles with classy photos” and that acceptance is not guaranteed.

The BlackGentry FAQ lists what gets a profile rejected or left on the waitlist: photos with middle fingers, gang signs, grills, money or sexual content, low-effort profiles, low-quality pictures, heavy filters, memes and group photos. BlackGentry does not give feedback or an estimated review time, so if you are stuck, improve your photos and answers from the edit profile page and wait for the next review. You also need to complete 75% of the profile questions before you can send likes.

How matching and messaging work on the BlackGentry dating app

Matching works like most swipe apps: you like or pass on profiles, and when two people like each other they match. A few BlackGentry rules change how that plays out, all from its FAQ and store listings:

    • Free chat with matches. Every member can message matches without paying.
    • Direct Messages. You can also message people you have not matched with, but free members get a limited number per day. If you only want messages from matches, the developer says you can turn DMs off in settings.
    • 24-hour timer. After a match, one of you must start the conversation within 24 hours or the match is disabled. A “time token” adds 24 hours. New profiles get one; more cost money.
    • Daily limits. Free members have a cap on profiles seen and likes sent. The swipe limit resets every 12 hours and the DM limit once a day.
    • Professionals. A separate section where everyone must verify their LinkedIn profile, so you can browse professionals near you.
    • Gentry Lounge. A feed of the profiles getting the most attention, curated from your preferences and recent activity. Searching it is a VIP feature.

Filters are basic. A Google Play review from May 2026 says you can only set distance, gender and age, and that the app did not respect those settings. If height, kids or religion filters matter to you, that is a real limitation.

Is BlackGentry free? What you get without paying

Yes, you can use BlackGentry free: create a profile, browse, match and chat with matches. What you do not get free is volume and visibility. Here is what each paid tier adds, according to the store listings and the FAQ:

    • Deluxe: unlimited likes, unlimited Direct Messages, rewind, no ads, see who likes you, change your location, search, and “Second Chance” (the last 100 people you passed on).
    • VIP: everything in Deluxe, plus incognito mode, Gentry Lounge search and priority placement.

The FAQ is honest on one point worth repeating: “Subscriptions do not guarantee matches, or finding someone.” A June 2026 Google Play review describes exactly that: likes piling up on a free account, paying to see who sent them, then finding few active people to talk to.

BlackGentry prices in 2026: what is (and is not) published

BlackGentry does not publish a price list. The website and FAQ show no prices, and both store descriptions only say there are 1-month, 3-month, 6-month and 12-month plans, in US dollars, “subject to change without notice”. The closest thing to a price list is the in-app purchase section of the App Store listing, which shows these items without saying how long each lasts:

    In-app purchase (App Store name)Price
    BlackGentry Premium$14.99
    Deluxe 1 Month Disc$17.49
    Deluxe 1 week$19.99
    BlackGentry Deluxe$34.99
    VIP Subscription$44.99
    BlackGentry Deluxe$74.99
    1 VIP Token$4.99
    5-pack Crush Tokens$4.99
    5-pack Time Tokens$4.99
    5 VIP Tokens$19.99

Prices checked October 2026 on the US App Store listing. This list shows the most popular purchases, not every plan, and Android prices are not listed on Google Play.

A few download sites still reprint an older store description with a full price grid per plan length. The current App Store and Google Play descriptions no longer carry those numbers, so I would not rely on them. The only price that counts is the one on your payment screen, so check the plan length there before you tap buy.

The cheapest sensible way in: stay free until you know there are active people near you, then buy the shortest Deluxe plan. Since nothing is refundable (see below), a 12-month plan is a big bet on an app you have not yet seen work in your city.

What the fine print says (and where it contradicts itself)

BlackGentry's Terms and Privacy Policy were both updated on June 22, 2026. The parts that matter for your money and data:

    • No refunds. The Terms say “all purchases are final and non-refundable”, except where the law or Apple and Google policies require otherwise. Tokens “have no cash value”.
    • Auto-renewal. Subscriptions renew at the end of each period unless you cancel at least 24 hours before. Free or discounted trials turn into paid plans.
    • Arbitration. Disputes go to binding individual arbitration under Georgia law, not to court, with a class action waiver (small claims court remains an option).
    • Bans. ZeelTech can suspend or close an account “at any time and for any lawful reason”, and you generally get nothing back for the time left on a plan.

Some of BlackGentry's own pages disagree with each other, which is not a sign of a scam but is a sign of a small team:

    • The homepage says the app has “passed 2 million downloads” and, a few lines down, “Over 3 Million+ Downloads”. Google Play shows 500K+ Android downloads; Apple publishes no download count.
    • The FAQ says in one answer that deleting your account ends your subscription immediately, and in another that it does not. The Terms settle it: deleting your account does not cancel a subscription.
    • The Google Play description tells Android users to manage their plan in “iTunes Account Settings”, a leftover from the iPhone text. On Android you cancel in Google Play.
    • Google Play's data safety section says “No data shared with third parties”, but the Privacy Policy says BlackGentry shares app usage data and advertising identifiers with partners including Meta, Google and TikTok. You can opt out in the app settings or by emailing contact@blackgentryapp.com with the subject “Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information”.

Real profiles or a ghost town? Ratings and complaints

The ratings are good on paper: 4.7 out of 5 from 27K ratings on the App Store and 4.4 from 6.91K reviews on Google Play (October 2026). Positive App Store reviews praise the quality of the men and the manual approval; one from September 2025 calls it the only dating app the reviewer still uses.

The most-read Android reviews tell a different story, and they are recent. A June 2026 review says the app felt “like a ghost town” after paying, even in the Professionals section. A May 2026 review calls Deluxe “not worth the money” because of the basic filters and lag. The most helpful review on Google Play (168 people) complains of being shown and messaged by men outside the reviewer's preferences and asks for a refund. ZeelTech replied to each of these reviews, pointing to settings or asking for details by email.

My read: the community is real and the approval step keeps out the worst profiles, but the active pool depends heavily on your city. A big metro area is a safer bet than a small market. Use the free tier to find out before you pay.

    Safety and verification on BlackGentry

BlackGentry does more vetting than most apps in its niche, but less than its “members-only” pitch suggests. Its safety policy page says every user submits a selfie that the team reviews by hand during registration, and the Privacy Policy says human moderators compare it to your photos without facial recognition. Then the honest part: BlackGentry “does not conduct criminal background checks or identity verifications” and does not guarantee anyone's identity. The LinkedIn check only applies to the Professionals section.

To report someone, use “Report User” at the bottom of a profile or under the three dots in a chat; a reason is required. You can also block, or email the company. Consequences range from a warning to a permanent ban, and violence, threats or sexual misconduct lead to an immediate ban.

BlackGentry's Safe Dating Guidance lists the scam patterns to watch for, which match the FTC's romance scam advice:

    • intense feelings or talk of commitment very early;
    • always an excuse to avoid a video call;
    • money problem stories: medical bills, travel fees, customs, a locked account;
    • requests for gift cards, wire transfers, crypto or cash app payments;
    • pressure to move to WhatsApp or text right away.

Never send money to someone you have not met in person. Do a video call before a first date, meet in a busy public place and arrange your own ride. If you lose money, report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and call your bank.

    Pros and cons

    Pros

    • Built for Black singles who want something serious, with a clear community standard.
    • Every profile is manually approved and selfie-checked before it goes live.
    • Chatting with matches is free.
    • LinkedIn-verified Professionals section for career-focused daters.
    • Actively maintained, with frequent updates and a developer who replies to reviews.

    Cons

    • No published price list, and every purchase is non-refundable.
    • Waitlist with no feedback and no time estimate.
    • Basic filters (distance, gender, age) that some reviewers say do not work well.
    • Thin user base in smaller cities, by several reviewers' accounts.
    • Contradictions across its own pages on downloads, deletion and data sharing.

How to cancel BlackGentry and delete your account

Cancel first, then delete. Deleting the account does not stop billing, and anything left on your plan is forfeited when the account is gone.

    1. iPhone: open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions, choose BlackGentry and tap Cancel Subscription (Apple's steps).
    2. Android: open Google Play, tap your profile icon, then Payments & subscriptions, Subscriptions, BlackGentry, Cancel (Google's steps).
    3. Cancel at least 24 hours before the renewal date. You keep access until the end of the period you paid for.
    4. Delete the account: in the app, go to Settings and scroll to the bottom for the delete option. If you only want a break and plan to come back, hide your profile instead, because subscriptions cannot be moved to a new account.

According to the Privacy Policy, a deleted account is kept for up to three months for safety reasons and transaction records for up to ten years. To ask for your data to be erased, email contact@blackgentryapp.com; the company aims to answer within 45 days.

    BlackGentry alternatives

    • The League: the closest match for the “ambitious professionals” idea, also with LinkedIn and a waitlist, but not focused on Black daters.
    • Hinge: the biggest relationship-focused app, with ethnicity preferences and a much larger pool, which matters if your city is thin on BlackGentry.
    • eHarmony: for people who want a slower, questionnaire-based approach to a long-term relationship.
    • Bumble: a large mainstream option where women message first.
    • AfroRomance: a website for interracial dating, if you want to meet people of other races rather than date within the community.

For more options focused on commitment, see my list of serious dating apps.

    How I rate it

I give BlackGentry 3 out of 5. This rating is based on public information, not on hands-on use: its store listings, FAQ, Terms, Privacy Policy and safety pages, its App Store and Google Play reputation, and value for money, all checked in October 2026. Scored 1 to 5 on each: value for money 2.5 (useful free tier, but unlabeled prices and no refunds), safety and verification 3.5 (manual approval and selfie check, no ID or background checks), evidence of an active user base 3 (strong ratings and steady updates, but recent “ghost town” complaints), features for its audience 3 (Professionals and Gentry Lounge, weak filters), transparency 2 (no price list and several contradictions in its own pages). The average rounds to 3.

    Frequently asked questions

    Is BlackGentry a dating app?

Yes. BlackGentry is a members-only dating app for iPhone and Android, run by ZeelTech LLC in Atlanta, for ambitious and intentional singles, mainly Black daters looking for a serious relationship. Every profile goes on a waitlist and is reviewed by a membership committee before it is accepted.

    Is BlackGentry legit?

Yes, it is a real app from a US company, with 4.7 stars from 27K App Store ratings and 500K+ Google Play downloads in October 2026. The catch is cost, not fraud: plan prices are not published, purchases are non-refundable, and some recent Android reviews describe few active profiles after paying.

    Is BlackGentry free?

You can create a profile, browse, match and chat with your matches for free. Free members have daily limits on likes, profiles seen and Direct Messages. Deluxe and VIP subscriptions remove those limits and add features like seeing who likes you, incognito mode and the Gentry Lounge.

    How much does BlackGentry cost?

BlackGentry does not publish a price list. In October 2026 the US App Store lists in-app purchases such as Deluxe at $34.99 and $74.99, VIP at $44.99 and tokens from $4.99, without saying how long each plan lasts. Check the plan length on the payment screen before you buy.

    What does "black gentry" mean?

Gentry traditionally means people of good social standing, just below the nobility. BlackGentry borrows the word for its brand to signal a selective community of accomplished, intentional Black singles. In searches, it almost always refers to the dating app.

Which dating app do black men use?

Black men use the big mainstream apps like Hinge and Bumble, which have the largest pools, as well as apps built for Black singles such as BlackGentry. BlackGentry suits men who want a vetted, relationship-focused community, while a mainstream app gives more choice in smaller cities.
