Swirl Review 2026: Legit or Waste of Money?

The Swirl dating app is a real interracial dating app, not an outright scam, but in October 2026 it is not worth your time: it has 1.4 stars from just 28 Google Play reviews, it has not been updated since March 2025, users report they cannot get a verification code or log in, and there is no iPhone app. It costs nothing to try, so the risk is wasted effort and shared data rather than money. If you want interracial dating, a large mainstream app with ethnicity filters will give you far more people to meet.

My verdict: Legit in the sense that a registered company runs it and it does not charge you, but close to a ghost app. Tiny user base, broken sign-up reports, contradictory privacy claims and two company names in its own terms. I would skip it and use a bigger app instead.

What is the Swirl dating app, and who runs it?

Swirl calls itself "the worlds leading interracial dating app". It is an Android app on Google Play plus a website at swirldatingapp.com, where the footer reads "ยฉ 2023 Swirl Group".

The Google Play listing names the developer as Swirl Group LLC, with an address at 30 N Gould St in Sheridan, Wyoming, and an Australian (+61) phone number. That Sheridan address is a common registered-agent address for small LLCs, so it tells you where the company is registered, not where anyone works. The support email on Google Play is a Gmail address. The app's terms and conditions (last updated September 1, 2026) add to the confusion: the first paragraph says the agreement is with "Starr Group Holdings LLC", and the same paragraph later calls it "a contract between you and Swirl Group LLC". None of this makes it a scam, but it is a very small operation with little public accountability.

Two different Swirls: make sure you have the right one

Search "Swirl dating" and you will run into at least three unrelated products:

    • Swirl Dating App (swirldatingapp.com): the Android app this review covers, from Swirl Group LLC.
    • Swirl Dating (swirl-dating.com): a separate black and white dating website that claims "1,709,100+ registered members". Its "Join Now" button does not open a sign-up form of its own: it sends you to interracialromance.com through an affiliate link. This is the site behind the Trustpilot page Google's AI answer cites, which has a single review, from 2017, and is unclaimed.
    • Swirl - Video Dating: an unrelated iPhone app from Cookie Technology Pty Ltd. Its App Store listing has no ratings and its last version dates from December 2022.

So a good review or a big member count you see for "Swirl" may be about a different site entirely.

What does "swirl" mean in dating?

"Swirling" is an informal term for interracial dating, most often between Black and white partners (picture chocolate and vanilla ice cream twisted together). Some people use it proudly; others find the label dated and prefer to just say interracial dating. Either way, demand is real: Pew Research found that 17% of US newlyweds in 2015 had a spouse of a different race or ethnicity, up from 3% in 1967. You do not need a niche app to meet people open to it.

    Who it is for

The developer's FAQ says Swirl is for singles looking for "friendship, casual or serious relationships", with no particular pairing in mind beyond interracial dating. Its terms require you to be 18 or older.

The public members page gives a glimpse of who is there: in October 2026 it showed six profiles, two from Kenya and four from the US, aged 25 to 86. Combined with 10K+ downloads in total, that points to a very small, widely scattered pool. If you live outside a big city, the odds of a match nearby are slim.

    • Might suit: someone curious enough to spend ten minutes on a free app and happy to chat with people anywhere in the world.
    • Skip it if: you use an iPhone, you want local dates, or you want any kind of verified profiles.

    How Swirl works

The Google Play screenshots show a familiar setup: a username and password login, a swipe card asking "Want to date me?" with a heart and a cross, and a "Virtual Gifts" feature for sending small gifts to profiles. The FAQ adds Facebook login, profile photos, audio and video, private photos that only your "friends" can see (others see a locked picture), and audio and video calls. The website has its own search by gender, age, country, state and city.

There is no compatibility quiz or matching algorithm described anywhere. It is a swipe-and-browse app with a small directory behind it.

How to get it (and why iPhone users can't)

The Swirl dating app download is Android only. The developer's own download page says "The Swirl Dating app is currently being updated" and links only to Google Play. Its FAQ says iPhone users get Swirl "through our Progressive Web App", which means using the website in Safari, not an App Store app. The App Store app called "Swirl - Video Dating" is not this one.

    Is Swirl free?

Yes, as far as anything public shows. The Google Play listing shows the app as free with no in-app purchases listed. The homepage advertises "JOIN NOW โ€“ 100% Free Full Access Premium Membership for a limited time only", and the download page says "Download before July 30 and stay 100% free for life", without saying which year.

Prices checked October 2026 on the Google Play listing and swirldatingapp.com.

The website footer has a "Pay with Paypal" link, and the site's code includes PayPal subscription and credit buttons, so paid membership may switch on later. If it ever asks you for money, check the price on the payment screen and remember that a PayPal subscription is cancelled in your PayPal account, not by deleting the app.

    Safety, privacy and verification

Swirl's listing, FAQ and terms describe no verification badge, photo check or ID check. The terms say the company "may monitor and review new accounts" before they go live, ban nudity and unsolicited explicit photos, and promise a permanent ban for breaking those rules. There is no published reporting guide or safety center.

Its privacy claims contradict each other:

    • Google Play's data safety section (filled in by the developer) says "No data collected", "No data shared with third parties" and "Data isn't encrypted".
    • The privacy policy says it collects your name, email, location (latitude and longitude), payment information, and access to features such as contacts, calendar and gallery, and uses data to "deliver targeted advertising".
    • The FAQ says Swirl uses an "advanced encryption system", while the Play label says data isn't encrypted.

Both cannot be true. Treat anything you upload as not well protected: use a photo you do not use elsewhere, do not connect your contacts, and do not reuse a password.

With a small, international, unverified user base, the usual romance scam patterns apply. The FTC's romance scam guide lists the red flags: someone who wants to move off the app fast, cannot meet in person (lives abroad, works on an oil rig, serves in the military), or asks for money, gift cards, wire transfers or crypto. Never send money to someone you have not met, reverse-image search their photos, video call before meeting, meet in a public place, and report scams at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

    Complaints and app store ratings

On Google Play, Swirl has 1.4 stars from 28 reviews and 10K+ downloads, rated Mature 17+, with its last update on March 18, 2025 (checked October 2026). The written reviews describe an app that struggles to let people in:

    • May 2026: sign-up never sends the verification code, and the screen asks for a username where the code should go.
    • February 2025: the app keeps saying the username or password is wrong; the only way in is the website.
    • September 2024: hard to register, could not upload a photo, and deleting the account was "still more hassle".

These are not complaints about fake profiles or billing, which is what you would expect from a pay-to-chat trap. They are complaints about an app that barely works. For a "legit or waste of money" question, that matters: you are unlikely to lose money, but likely to lose time.

    Pros and cons

    Pros

    • Free, with no published paid plan or in-app purchases.
    • Clear focus on interracial dating.
    • Terms ban nudity and unsolicited explicit photos.
    • Private photos and audio and video calls, according to the FAQ.

    Cons

    • 1.4 stars on Google Play, with reports of failed sign-ups and logins.
    • No update since March 2025.
    • Android only; iPhone users get a web version.
    • Tiny, scattered user base (10K+ downloads, a six-profile public preview).
    • No profile verification; privacy label and privacy policy contradict each other.
    • Two company names in its own terms, and other sites using the same "Swirl" name.

How to delete your Swirl account

The privacy policy says you can permanently delete your account "on the settings page of your account in the Mobile Application". If that fails (one reviewer found deletion a hassle), email the developer at admin@swirldatingapp.com or swirldatingapp@gmail.com and ask for account and data deletion; Google Play's data safety section also says you can request deletion. Uninstalling the app does not delete your profile. Since there is no published paid plan, there is normally nothing to cancel; if you did pay through PayPal, cancel the automatic payment in your PayPal account.

    Swirl alternatives

For interracial dating, the bigger the pool, the better your chances, and the big apps let you browse everyone or filter as you like. The ones with a live review here:

    • Hinge: my pick for dating with intent; 4.4 stars from over 1.1 million ratings on the App Store (October 2026).
    • OkCupid: detailed profiles and questions, good if you want to see someone's views before you match.
    • Plenty of Fish: a huge, free-friendly app; 4.3 stars from over 1.8 million ratings on the App Store (October 2026).
    • Match and eHarmony: paid sites for people who want something serious.
    • Tinder: if you are asking which app is most used for hookups, this is the usual answer.

For more options, see my serious dating apps rankings, the hookup dating sites page, or browse all my reviews.

    How I rate it

My 1.5 out of 5 is based on public pricing, features, safety tools, app store reputation and value, not on hands-on use. Value for money 2.5 (free, but reports say you may not get past sign-up), safety and verification 1.5 (no verification, no published reporting process, privacy label and policy contradict each other), evidence of an active user base 1 (10K+ downloads, 28 reviews, no update since March 2025, a six-profile public preview), features for its audience 2 (swipe, gifts, private photos and calls, but Android only), transparency 1.5 (no prices, two company names in the terms, a "limited time" free offer with no dates). Average 1.7, rounded to 1.5.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the Swirl dating app legit?

Swirl is run by a registered company, Swirl Group LLC, and does not charge you, so it is not an outright scam. But it has 1.4 stars from 28 Google Play reviews, no update since March 2025, and reports of sign-up codes that never arrive. It is legit but barely working.

    Is Swirl free?

Yes. The Google Play listing shows it as free with no in-app purchases, and the website advertises free full-access premium membership for a limited time. No paid plan prices are published.

What is a swirl in dating?

Swirling is an informal term for interracial dating, most often between Black and white partners. Some people find the label dated and simply say interracial dating.

Is Swirl on the iPhone App Store?

No. The Swirl Dating App is Android only; its FAQ says iPhone users can use the website as a Progressive Web App. The App Store app called Swirl - Video Dating is an unrelated app from another company.

What is the hottest dating app right now?

By size, the big mainstream apps lead: Hinge has over 1.1 million ratings and Plenty of Fish over 1.8 million on the US App Store (October 2026). For interracial dating, a large app where you can browse everyone usually beats a small niche one.
