AfroIntroductions Review 2026: Real Profiles or Scam?
AfroIntroductions is a legit dating app, not a scam: it is run by Cupid Media, an Australian company behind 30+ niche dating sites, and the AfroIntroductions dating app has 5M+ downloads on Google Play. But free members can barely message each other, scam profiles are a common complaint, and one month costs $33.99 to $39.99 on the US App Store. It is worth paying only if you want a serious relationship with someone in Africa or the African diaspora and will check every match yourself.
What is AfroIntroductions, and who runs it?
AfroIntroductions is a website and app for meeting African singles. Its About page says it is used by people living in African countries and by people of African heritage in the USA, Canada and Europe. The home page calls it the "Largest African Dating Site With Over 4.5 Million Members" and lists members from the USA, UK, Germany, France, Kenya, Cameroon, South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana and other countries.
The numbers do not all agree. The home page says "since 2002", the contact page says it has been part of Cupid Media "since 2004", and the company's own blurb on Trustpilot says "over 2.5 million members" rather than 4.5 million. Either way, the count is accounts ever created, not people active today, and Cupid Media does not publish an active-user figure.
The Terms of Use (last updated 28 September 2026) name the operator: Cupid Media PTY LTD, registered in Queensland, Australia, at 21 Crombie Avenue, Bundall. The same company runs ThaiCupid, FilipinoCupid, InternationalCupid and PinkCupid, so the tiers, rules and help center work the same way across all of them. Google Play lists team@afrointroductions.com as the support email.
Who AfroIntroductions is for (and who should skip it)
- Good fit: singles in the US, UK or Europe who want a long-term relationship with someone from an African country and are ready to travel to meet.
- Also a fit: Africans living abroad who want to meet people from home, and singles in Africa who want to meet the diaspora.
- Poor fit: anyone who wants a quick local date in the US, anyone who will not pay, and anyone who expects every profile to be checked. A widely upvoted Google Play review (January 2021) complained of "tons" of messages from other countries and none from nearby.
- Not for: anyone looking for a "mail order bride" or a sugar arrangement. The terms say the service is not a marriage broker, mail order bride or matchmaking service, and the Community Guidelines ban "sugar daddy" and dowry profiles and any request for money or gifts. Members must be 18 or older.
How matching and messaging work
There is no swiping and no personality test. You sign up free, add photos, and wait for approval: the help center says new profiles are reviewed, usually within 24 hours, to make sure they follow the rules and contain no contact details. Then you meet people four ways:
- Search: filters for age, location and profile details. The help center's membership table says the "exclusive" filters (location, lifestyle, ethnicity, dating intention) need Platinum or Diamond.
- Matches: a list built from your match preferences. Platinum and Diamond add mutual and reverse matching.
- Likes: a free way to show interest, and the one thing free members can do without limits.
- Messages and Instant Messenger: written messages plus one-to-one live chat. The site runs in 23 languages, and Platinum and Diamond members can translate any message; Gold and free members can translate only messages from Platinum or Diamond members, per the translation article.
One missing feature matters for safety: the Instant Messenger does not support audio or video. You cannot video-check a match inside AfroIntroductions. As for how to introduce yourself, a short first message that mentions something specific from their profile beats a copy-paste "hi dear", which is also what many scam accounts send.
Is AfroIntroductions free? What the free tier allows
Joining, building a profile, browsing, searching and sending likes are free. Messaging is where the limits hit:
- A free (Standard) member cannot read or reply to messages from other free members, only from paying members, according to the help center's membership article.
- Free members can start only 3 new conversations per 24 hours; paid members can start up to 500, per the daily limits article (updated July 2026).
- The free app shows ads: Google Play labels it "Contains ads", and every paid tier removes third-party ads.
So how do you unlock messages on AfroIntroductions? Either you upgrade, or the person writing to you is a paying member. Two free members cannot hold a conversation. There is no free trial: a Google Play reviewer asked for one in August 2026, and Cupid Media replied that the basic membership is free and the premium fee "supports our anti-scam endeavors".
AfroIntroductions prices and plans
AfroIntroductions shows web prices only after you log in, and the help center says there are four grades: Standard (free), Gold, Platinum and Diamond. The clearest public list is the US App Store:
| Plan | 1 week | 1 month | 3 months | 12 months |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard (free) | $0 | $0 | $0 | $0 |
| Gold | $17.99 | $33.99 | $67.99 (about $22.66/month) | not on the US list |
| Platinum | $19.99 | $39.99 | $79.99 (about $26.66/month) | $169.99 (about $14.17/month) |
| Diamond | Not priced publicly on the App Store | |||
Prices checked October 2026 on the US App Store listing. That list also carries lines it does not explain: a second "Gold Membership (1 Month)" at $43.90 and two more Platinum 12-month entries at $51.90 and $104.99, likely promotional or older offers. The App Store pages that rank for this search are foreign storefronts with different prices: Saint Lucia's lists Gold for 12 months at $134.99, and Iceland's charges $42.15 for a month of Gold and $199.99 for a year of Platinum. On Android, the Google Play listing shows only a range: $17.00 to $204.99 per item. Check the plan name, length and total before you confirm.
What each tier adds
- Gold: unlimited messaging with all members, Instant Messenger chat, no ads, a profile boost, the option to hide your profile and photos, and virtual gifts.
- Platinum: everything in Gold, plus message translation, the advanced search filters, mutual and reverse matching, and ranking above Gold and free members.
- Diamond: everything in Platinum, plus ranking above all members, priority placement in the inboxes you message, a Diamond icon and premium support.
That breakdown comes from the help center's benefit table and section 2.8 of the terms. The table promises "up to 1400 Coins" with eligible plans. Coins pay for virtual gifts, which cost 10 to 4,990 Coins each, and unused Coins expire 365 days after purchase.
How to pay, and the cheapest sensible way in
On the website, the help center lists credit card, debit card, Google Pay, vouchers and country-specific methods, which vary by country. In the apps, you pay through Apple or Google. If you paid and your account did not upgrade, the payment article says non-instant methods can take 2 to 5 business days and lists what to send support.
Skip the weekly plans: Platinum at $19.99 a week comes to about $87 a month if it renews, and Gold weekly to about $78. To try AfroIntroductions, 3-month Gold ($67.99) is the cheapest way to unlock messaging for a real stretch. If you will write to members whose first language is French or Amharic, 3-month Platinum ($79.99) adds translation for $12 more, and that is the one I would pick. Commit to 12 months only once you know the site is working for you.
Is there an AfroIntroductions app?
Yes, on both stores, and it uses the same account as the website. On the US App Store it has 4.5 stars from 13K ratings, is rated 18+ and needs iOS 15.6 or later; version 10.71.1 came out in October 2026. On Google Play it has 4.4 stars from 219K reviews and 5M+ downloads, is rated Mature 17+, has been on the store since June 2017 and was updated October 9, 2026. Download it only from those two stores: an APK from a third-party site is not a Cupid Media release you can trust with your login and card.
Real profiles or scam? Complaints and ratings
AfroIntroductions is not a scam business: you get the service you pay for, from a registered company with a public help center. The trouble is scammers using it. The ratings show the split (all checked October 2026):
- App Store (US): 4.5 stars from 13K ratings.
- Google Play: 4.4 stars from 219K reviews.
- Trustpilot: 2.3 out of 5 from 798 reviews on its AfroIntroductions page, with 45% five-star and 22% one-star. Trustpilot notes the company has not replied to negative reviews.
The negative reviews repeat the same themes: profiles that look fake, matches asking for money, cancellation that is hard to complete, charges after a plan ended, accounts suspended without explanation, and slow support. The Reddit thread that ranks for this search is summed up in its preview: "75% of the pictures are fake". The positive reviews praise the filters, the quick sign-up and real connections. A July 2026 Google Play review describes an app that crashed and then refused login with "Error (Not Authorized)" during a paid 3-month plan; Cupid Media pointed to the contact form.
Cupid Media's side: the help center says a dedicated Fraud Prevention team works on scams, and section 4 of the terms bans asking for money or bank details, promoting crypto schemes, and running AI chatbots or undisclosed AI profiles. Suspensions are part of that: the terms let Cupid Media terminate accounts that break the rules, and the guidelines say dormant accounts are closed from time to time.
Safety and verification on AfroIntroductions
- ID verification is optional. You can upload a color copy of a valid government photo ID. The help center says it checks name, gender, date of birth and photo, shows the result on your profile, and destroys the document after processing (verification article). Since it is optional, many profiles have no badge.
- No routine background checks. Section 2.3(c) of the terms says Cupid Media "does not routinely undertake background checks" or criminal screening. Profile approval only checks that content follows the rules.
- Report and block: a Report Abuse button (the ! icon) on photos, messages and profiles, and in the Instant Messenger's "More" menu (how to report). Add screenshots and detail.
- The site's own advice: the Dating Safety page says to keep conversations on the platform, warns about people "stuck" abroad who need money to get home, and calls someone who avoids phone or video calls a red flag.
- Privacy: the App Store privacy label says purchases, location, contact info, identifiers and sensitive info may be linked to you, and usage data may be used to track you across other companies' apps.
How to tell a real profile from a scammer
With no video inside the app, the checking is on you. The FTC's romance scam guide lists the signs AfroIntroductions reviewers describe: a quick push to talk on another app, fast talk of love, reasons they can never meet (working abroad, on an oil rig, in the military), then a request for money by wire, gift card, money app or crypto. My checklist:
- Look for the verified badge and several everyday photos, not only studio shots.
- Run a reverse image search on the photos. A face that appears under other names is a fake.
- Ask for a live video call on a video app early on. A camera that is always "broken" is your answer.
- Never send money, gift cards, airtime, visa fees or crypto, whatever the story. A request breaks the site's rules, so report it.
- Stay on the platform until you are sure. A push to WhatsApp in the first messages is the pattern the site's own safety page warns about.
- Report it with Report Abuse, and at ReportFraud.ftc.gov if you lost money.
- When you travel to meet, meet in a public place, tell someone your plans, and keep control of your own transport and return ticket.

How to cancel AfroIntroductions and delete your account
Cancel where you paid, then switch off your profile. Deleting your profile does not stop an App Store or Google Play subscription, and the help center recommends changing auto-renewal at least 48 hours before your plan ends.

- Paid on the website: log in, click the gear icon, choose Billing, click the slider next to "Your membership auto-renewal is ON", then Confirm (auto-renewal guide).
- Paid in the iPhone app: Settings, your name, Subscriptions, AfroIntroductions, Cancel Subscription.
- Paid in the Android app: Play Store, your profile picture, Payments & subscriptions, Subscriptions, AfroIntroductions, Cancel.
- Deactivate or delete: open the member menu, choose Switch Off Profile, then pick Deactivate (hidden until you click "Reactivate Me") or Delete (permanent after 30 days, and you can still reactivate within those 30 days), per the switch-off guide.
Refunds: when you can get your money back
The refund policy promises a full refund only if your account had technical problems, the site was down, or you ask before you have contacted or been contacted by any member. There are no partial refunds for unused time, and anything else is at Cupid Media's discretion. Residents of some US states, including California, New York and Illinois, get 3 business days under section 16.3 of the terms to cancel for a refund, by a signed, dated notice sent by registered or certified mail. If you see a charge you did not make, the billing article says fraudulent card use is refunded in full. App Store and Google Play purchases go through Apple's or Google's own refund process.
AfroIntroductions alternatives
What is the best African dating site? For cross-border dating with Africa, AfroIntroductions is the specialist option, and Cupid Media's sister site InternationalCupid works the same way for international dating in general. Other options with full reviews on this site:
- Interracial dating in the US: AfroRomance, a different company that focuses on interracial dating.
- International chat with a large pool: Dating.com or Badoo, which has a usable free tier.
- Local Black singles in your city: mainstream apps such as Hinge and Bumble are built for meeting people nearby. No public data says which app Black Americans use most, so be wary of anyone who claims to know.
- A serious relationship at home: eHarmony.

How I rate it
I give AfroIntroductions 3 out of 5. That rating is based on public pricing, features, safety tools, app store reputation and value, not on hands-on use. Value for money: 2.5 (one month costs $33.99 to $39.99, and free members can hardly talk). Safety and verification: 3 (optional ID check, a fraud team and clear report tools, but no routine checks, no in-app video and many scam complaints). Evidence of an active user base: 4 (5M+ Google Play downloads, about 232K ratings across both stores, app updates in October 2026). Features for its audience: 3.5 (23 languages, translation and detailed search suit cross-border dating). Transparency: 2.5 (auto-renewal, cancellation and deletion are well documented, but web prices sit behind a login, the App Store list is confusing and refunds are narrow).
Frequently asked questions
Is AfroIntroductions a good dating site?
It is a legitimate site run by Cupid Media, with 5M+ downloads on Google Play and 4.4 to 4.5 stars on both app stores. It works best for people who want a serious cross-border relationship with someone in Africa or the diaspora. Scam profiles are a common complaint, so verify every match with a video call and never send money.
Is AfroIntroductions free?
Joining, browsing, searching and sending likes are free. Free members cannot read or reply to messages from other free members and can start only 3 new conversations a day, so in practice one person has to pay. Paid plans start at $33.99 for a month of Gold on the US App Store (October 2026).
How do I unlock messages on AfroIntroductions?
Upgrade to Gold, Platinum or Diamond, which unlocks messaging with all members. As a free member you can still read and reply to messages sent by paying members. There is no free trial of the paid tiers.
How can I pay for AfroIntroductions?
On the website you can pay by credit card, debit card, Google Pay, vouchers or country-specific methods, depending on where you live. In the iPhone or Android app you pay through Apple or Google Play, and you cancel there too.
What is the best dating app for Black Americans?
No public data shows which app Black Americans use most. For local dating in the US, mainstream apps like Hinge and Bumble have the largest pools near you, and AfroRomance focuses on interracial dating. AfroIntroductions is the better fit only if you want to meet people in Africa or the African diaspora abroad.
How do I cancel AfroIntroductions?
On the website, go to Settings, Billing and switch off auto-renewal, then confirm. If you paid in the app, cancel in your iPhone Settings or the Google Play Store. Do it at least 48 hours before renewal; deleting your profile does not stop the subscription.
