BestDates Review 2026: Real Profiles or Scam?
BestDates is a real, working dating site run by a US company, so it is not a fake website, but it is a pay-per-message chat platform, not a place to meet local singles cheaply. Searching is free, while every chat minute, letter and private photo costs credits, prices are only shown after you sign up, and its own rules split members into paying "Users" and verified "Top Users" who use the site for free. I would not spend money on the BestDates dating site if your goal is to meet someone in person.
What BestDates is and who runs it
BestDates (bestdates.com) describes itself as a social and dating platform for "friendship, conversation, or connection". It works only in a web browser. I found no BestDates app on the App Store or Google Play in October 2026, and the apps with similar names there ("Best Date Ever", for example) are unrelated products.
The company behind it is MMA Digital Corp., 7251 West Lake Mead Boulevard, Suite 300, Las Vegas, Nevada, according to the footer of its Terms of Use, which also names it as the controller of your data in the privacy policy. Google's AI Overview says BestDates is based in Limassol, Cyprus, which matches nothing on the site's own legal pages, so go by the terms: your contract is with a Nevada company, under binding arbitration.
One more thing worth knowing before you read other reviews: the Space Coast Daily article that ranks for this search, the one that calls BestDates "one of the safest online dating sites", states at the bottom that it "is sponsored by Bestdates".
How BestDates works
Sign-up is free and 18+ only. You give your gender, name, date of birth, email and a password, or use a Google account, per the site's FAQ for Newbies. From there:
- Search and People page: browse profiles with filters, or like and skip the suggested Top Users on the People page.
- Newsfeed: members post photos and updates; much of it is free to view.
- Winks and follows: free ways to signal interest, per the Tools & Features guide.
- Chats and mails: instant chat (billed by the minute) and longer letters (billed per letter). Both cost credits.
- Let's Talk: ready-made opening messages you can send to start a chat.
- Private photos: some Top User photos stay locked until they reply to your first message.
Two lines in the terms explain a lot of what reviewers describe. Section 7.3 says "Icebreakers" are the same messages sent "to the other randomly matched users", with no limit on how many you receive, so a flood of friendly openers on day one is a feature, not proof of interest. Section 7.1 says some users are offered automatic chat translation, a sign that many members do not write in English. The terms also say the platform "is designed for entertainment".
Real profiles or scam? How the Top User system works
"Real or fake" is the wrong question for BestDates. Its FAQ says there are two kinds of members:
- Users sign up in a minute and "pay for some functions". The FAQ describes their use of the platform as "aimed at content consumption".
- Top Users apply through a form, must meet requirements on identity verification, activity and "communication with other users", and "may use our platform for free". The terms add that Top Users can use the paid features "free of charge".
So one group pays by the minute to talk, and the other is screened, held to activity rules and talks for free. BestDates' page on how it prevents deception says Top Users must send ID documents, usually with a video of themselves holding the ID and reading a text, and that everything they post is pre-moderated. That makes the profiles more likely to belong to real, verified people than on many chat sites. It does not tell you why each person is there. The FAQ itself warns that "not all users aim for romantic relations" and that the verification is only "a basic check of their name, age and appearance".
That is the setup Trustpilot reviewers are reacting to when they say chats feel scripted or that they could not tell if they were talking to "a real person or an AI". Google's AI Overview also summarizes Reddit users as describing "bots and fake profiles" (I could not open Reddit to check the threads directly). I cannot prove any individual profile is fake, and BestDates bans bots and impersonation. What I can say from its own documents: paying members are the customers, Top Users talk for free, and the site earns from every minute of the conversation.
Free vs paid: what BestDates costs
BestDates publishes no price list you can see before joining. Its Payment and Refund Policy says prices appear "on the Credits page" and next to each paid feature once you are a member. Here is what is free and what costs credits, per the FAQ and the policy (checked October 2026):
| Feature | Free or paid |
|---|---|
| Sign-up, profile, search, People page | Free |
| Winks, likes, follows, most of the newsfeed | Free |
| Welcome credits | 20 credits on sign-up |
| Chat messages | Paid, charged per minute (Chat Gems used first: 1 gem = 1 minute) |
| Mails (letters) | Paid, per letter |
| Opening photos in mails, viewing profile videos | Paid |
| Stickers and virtual gifts | Paid |
| Subscription | None offered: credits packages only |
Prices checked October 2026: not published. One Trustpilot reviewer says a mail costs 10 credits and a photo 50, which I could not confirm at the source. Other details from the policy that matter for your wallet:
- Credits are bought in US dollars with cards, Google Pay or PayPal (no gift or prepaid cards). Your bank may add currency fees.
- A failed payment is automatically retried once.
- BestDates can change the price of any feature, or make a free one paid, "at its sole discretion".
- Credits have no cash value and BestDates can "reduce the number of Credits" on your balance.
Because there is no subscription, there is nothing to auto-renew. The risk is the opposite: a per-minute chat has no ceiling, and one Trustpilot reviewer says the 20 free credits "ran out within minutes".
Can you get a refund from BestDates?
Rarely. The policy says purchases "in most cases" are nonrefundable, then lists the exceptions:
- Unspent credits bought by mistake: ask within 3 calendar days.
- Unspent credits when you close your account: only if they are worth more than $20, and never from your fifth request on.
- Spent credits: only if BestDates failed to provide the service, if another member scammed you, or if someone used your card without permission, and you must ask within 30 days of finding out.
- Some US states: state law may let you cancel a purchase before midnight of the third business day.
- EU and EEA residents: unspent credits within 14 days of registering.

All requests must arrive within 120 days of a card payment or 180 days of a PayPal payment, go to support@bestdates.help, and the decision is "final and non-negotiable". The policy says outright that you are unlikely to get credits back because another member stopped replying. Be careful with chargebacks: under section 10.2 of the terms, one disputed charge can get your account soft-blocked, several can get it deleted, and restoring access can require uploading your ID and a photo of you holding your card. Disputes go to individual arbitration, with a class action waiver, and BestDates caps its liability at what you paid or $100, whichever is greater.
Safety and verification
On paper, BestDates' safety work is more detailed than most chat sites. Its page on how it enforces the rules describes machine-learning moderation, a keyword filter in chats and a Trust & Safety team "of over 50 professionals". Top Users pass ID and video checks. You can block members and send an abuse report in the site or by email.
The gaps: regular Users are not ID-verified, and BestDates "does not conduct criminal background checks", says its scam prevention page. Contact details are not allowed in profiles, which keeps you on paid chat. Standard romance scam advice from the FTC applies here, especially on an international site: never send money or gift cards to someone you have not met in person, be wary of anyone who cannot meet or video call, reverse-search profile photos, and report fraud at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
BestDates dating site reviews: what members complain about
On Trustpilot, BestDates has a 3.7 TrustScore from 3,446 reviews (October 2026): 54% five-star and 23% one-star, with few in between. The company claimed its profile in July 2021, pays for a Trustpilot subscription, invites customers to review and replies to 99% of negative reviews, mostly with a template pointing to support. Recent reviews repeat the same points:
- Cost: the most common complaint. Credits are "costly", chat time is short, and reviewers call the per-action charges a rip-off.
- Doubts about who is chatting: several one-star reviews say profiles behaved like bots; others say they could not tell.
- Location: some men looking for local women report messages from outside the US and distance filters that show people far away.
- Bugs: search filters that reset, messages sent twice, error pages, logouts in the middle of a long message.
- Accounts: accounts frozen or "on hold" during verification with no clear reason.
- Support: praised by name in many five-star reviews, called slow and scripted in others.
The positive reviews mostly praise friendly conversations and attentive staff. Very few describe meeting someone offline.
Pros and cons
Pros
- A real US company with detailed, public terms and safety pages.
- Free sign-up, search, winks and 20 welcome credits.
- ID and video verification for Top Users, pre-moderated content.
- No subscription, so nothing auto-renews.
Cons
- Pay-per-minute chat and pay-per-letter mail, with no public prices.
- Two-tier model: paying Users chat with Top Users who use it free.
- Refunds limited to narrow cases, arbitration only.
- No mobile app, and reviewers who wanted local matches got messages from abroad.
- Regular members are not ID-verified, no background checks.
How to delete your BestDates account
- Spend or request your unspent credits first. Closing the account is one of the cases where unspent credits worth over $20 can be refunded, so ask in the same email.
- Deactivate if you only want a break: profile settings, deactivate. Per BestDates' account guide, this hides your profile and stops emails but does not delete anything.
- Delete permanently by email: write to support@bestdates.help from your account's email address and ask for permanent deletion. You can also ask for a copy of your personal data.
- Turn off notifications in Settings while you wait, and keep the support reply as proof of your request.
BestDates alternatives
If you want dates rather than paid chats, a mainstream site with a flat subscription and a real local pool will cost less per conversation. With a live review here:

How I rate it
My 2 out of 5 is based on public pricing, features, safety tools, app store reputation and value, not on hands-on use. Value for money 1.5 (per-minute chat and per-letter fees, no published prices, few refunds), safety and verification 2.5 (ID and video checks for Top Users, a 50+ person moderation team, but no checks for regular members and no background checks), evidence of an active user base 2 (3,446 Trustpilot reviews, but no app, reviewers who get messages from abroad and repeated doubts about who is chatting), features for its audience 2 (search, chat, mail, icebreakers and translation, but browser only), transparency 1.5 (the company and its rules are named in detail, but prices are hidden until sign-up and the paying vs free member split is only explained deep in the FAQ). Average 1.9, rounded to 2.
Frequently asked questions
Is BestDates a real dating site?
Yes, BestDates is a real website run by MMA Digital Corp. of Las Vegas, Nevada, with public terms and safety pages. But it works as a pay-per-message chat platform: paying Users are charged per chat minute and per letter, while verified Top Users use it for free. I would not pay for it if you want to meet someone in person.
How much does BestDates cost?
Sign-up, search, winks and 20 welcome credits are free. Chats are charged per minute, letters per message, and photos, videos and stickers cost credits too. BestDates publishes no price list before you join, and it has no subscription, only credit packages.
What are people saying about BestDates.com on Reddit?
Google's AI Overview summarizes Reddit users as reporting a paid credit system, profiles they believe are automated or fake, and trouble deleting accounts without contacting support. Trustpilot reviews, which I could read, repeat the cost complaints and doubts about who is chatting, alongside praise for the support staff.
Can I get a refund from BestDates?
Usually not. Unspent credits can come back if bought by mistake and reported within 3 days, or on account closure when worth over $20. Spent credits are refunded only for scams, unauthorized use or a service failure, reported within 30 days.
What's the best 100% free dating site?
No big dating site is fully free, but some give you a lot without paying. Plenty of Fish and OkCupid let you message for free, and Hinge has a useful free version. All three are cheaper per conversation than any pay-per-minute chat site.
