Hinge vs eHarmony: Which Is Better in 2026?

Hinge vs eharmony comes down to who does the choosing: pick eharmony if you want marriage or a long-term partner and would rather answer a compatibility quiz and let the site pick your matches; pick Hinge if you want to browse profiles yourself, start a conversation by reacting to a photo or prompt, and use a free tier that actually lets you chat. Hinge is cheaper, more flexible and skews younger; eharmony is more structured, more expensive and locks you into a longer plan.

My verdict: Both are legit and relationship-focused. I rate Hinge 4.5/5 in my Hinge review and eharmony 4/5 in my eharmony review. Start on Hinge’s free version if you are under 40 or live in a city. Choose eharmony when you know you want something serious, find swiping draining, and are fine with a 6 to 24 month plan that renews automatically.

How matching works on each

This is the real difference. On Hinge you do the choosing; on eharmony a questionnaire does most of it for you.

eharmony: a quiz first, then a curated list

eharmony makes everyone take its Compatibility Quiz before matching starts. Its quiz page says it takes roughly 20 minutes and covers your personality, communication style, attitude to relationships and the boundaries you prefer, with some picture-pair questions. Your answers build a Personality Profile and a Compatibility Score from 60 to 140 shown on each match; eharmony suggests messaging anyone at 110 or above.

You then work through the people eharmony suggests, send Likes and a first message, and talk once there is mutual interest. Profiles are long: the App Store listing says every profile must be at least 50% complete. In my eharmony review the whole process, quiz plus profile, took about an hour, and I got fewer messages than on swipe apps, but better ones.

Hinge: browse, react, start talking

Hinge shows you one profile at a time in its Discover feed. Each profile is built from photos and written prompts, and you send a Like on a specific photo or answer, with an optional comment that Hinge says makes a reply more likely, as its Likes help page explains. If they like you back, you match and chat. Hinge says it learns your type over time and, after you exchange phone numbers with a match, asks how the date went to tune its recommendations.

One rule surprises new users: Your Turn Limits. When too many matches are waiting for your reply, Hinge stops you from sending or accepting new Likes until you answer or close some chats. It applies to paying members too. It is Hinge’s answer to ghosting, and it nudges you toward fewer, real conversations.

The rule of thumb: if decision fatigue killed online dating for you, eharmony removes most of the browsing. If you trust your own taste and want to see who is out there, Hinge gives you the feed and the tools.

What’s free on each

Both are free to join, but only one of the free versions lets you hold a real conversation.

  • Hinge free: Hinge says the regular version is free to use. You can match and message without paying. The limits, per its subscription benefits page: a select number of Likes per day, incoming Likes shown one at a time, 1 Undo Skip per week, and 1 free Rose per week. In my Hinge review the daily allowance was eight Likes, which goes fast in a busy city.
  • eharmony free (Basic): Basic has no time limit. After the quiz you can view matches and Discover profiles, send Likes and a first message, says the cost page. The terms spell out the catch: Basic members “generally only” see blurred photos, can send unlimited predefined messages such as a smile, and have “only a limited ability to send and read personalized messages”.

In practice, Hinge is the one you can genuinely test for free. eharmony’s free tier shows you whether your matches look promising on paper, then asks you to pay to see faces and talk.

What each one really costs

Neither company prints a public price list. Hinge shows prices inside the app when you tap Subscribe; eharmony shows them on its Subscription page after you log in. Prices can differ by person and location, so the closest thing to published prices is each app’s App Store listing.

Prices checked October 2026 on the Hinge and eharmony App Store listings and Google Play. Plan lengths and renewal rules come from Hinge’s billing help page and eharmony’s terms.

The monthly rate matters less than the commitment. Hinge lets you pay for a single week or month, so you can try Hinge+ during a busy stretch and stop. eharmony’s terms list Premium plans in 6, 12 and 24-month terms that renew automatically for 12 months at a time. Put the cancellation date in your calendar the day you subscribe.

What paying adds: Hinge+ gives unlimited Likes, all your incoming Likes at once, unlimited Undo Skips and advanced filters such as height, children, family plans, education and politics; HingeX adds an always-on boost, “Priority Likes” that stay at the top of someone’s list for 7 days, and earlier access to compatible profiles. eharmony Premium unlocks photos, unlimited messaging, who viewed you, your full Personality Profile and changing your search settings.

Who you’ll meet on Hinge and eharmony

Neither company publishes a US member count that can be checked. The best neutral data is Pew Research Center’s survey of 6,034 US adults (July 2022): about one in five Americans who have dated online have used Hinge, and about one in five have used eharmony, behind Tinder (46%) and Match (31%), per its key findings. Its 50-and-up report found no significant age difference among older daters for either app, while Match was far more common with them.

The store data hints at scale: Hinge has 1.1M App Store ratings to eharmony’s 49K, although eharmony also runs a full website that the store counts miss. eharmony says it has helped “over 2 million couples” find love; that is the company’s own claim, not an audited figure.

  • Hinge is built around phones, prompts and quick replies, and in my Hinge review it fit millennial and Gen Z daters who want something serious and will put effort into a profile. Hinge’s own about page says its community includes a diversity of genders and sexualities.
  • eharmony asks for time up front and then charges for a long plan, which filters for people who want commitment. It is open to anyone 18 and up and works on a computer as well as the apps, which suits daters who prefer a bigger screen. If you are over 50, my list of the best dating apps over 50 compares it with the alternatives.

Safety and verification

Both are mainstream, legit services. eharmony’s terms say it runs no criminal background checks, and Hinge’s help pages describe none either, so the verification tools are worth knowing.

  • Hinge: optional Selfie Verification, a short video that goes through a liveness check and a 3D face match against your photos, then adds a badge. Anyone can see which profiles are verified. To report someone, tap the three dots on their profile or chat, then Report; the report is confidential and you will not see each other again.
  • eharmony: an optional SMS Verified badge that confirms a phone number. Its terms state plainly that eharmony “does not currently conduct criminal background screenings”, and that it may delete messages from profiles identified as spam or romance scams. The long quiz and paywall do keep out many low-effort fake accounts.

A text-verified number proves less than a face check, so on eharmony lean on a video call before meeting. On either app, a match who quickly wants to move to another messaging app, has an emergency, or brings up money or crypto is following a scam script; my guide to online dating scams lists the patterns.

How to cancel or get a refund

  • Hinge: cancel where you paid: Apple subscriptions in your iPhone settings, Google Play under Subscriptions, Hinge payment (Stripe) under Manage subscription. Most purchases are nonrefundable and Roses or Boosts are final; Apple handles refunds for App Store purchases, per Hinge’s refund page. Deleting the app does not delete your account; use Settings, then Delete Account, after you cancel the subscription.
  • eharmony: on the web, open Data & settings and choose Amend subscription (“Cancel auto renewal” in the US); app store purchases are cancelled in Apple or Google settings, per its cancellation help page. Your Premium runs to the end of the term, and the terms say there is no refund for unused days.
  • Both: if you live in Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Rhode Island or Wisconsin, both companies let you cancel for a full refund within about three business days of subscribing. Hinge asks for a signed written notice for web and Android purchases; check the exact steps on each refund page and in eharmony’s terms.

Numbers you’ll see elsewhere (and which to trust)

Comparisons of these two disagree with each other and with the companies. One AI-cited page lists Hinge at $9.99 in its text and $19.99 in its table on the same page, and eharmony at $35.90 a month; another blog gives eharmony as $35.90 to $65.90 a month. Neither company publishes those figures today, so treat any fixed monthly price as dated: check the price on your own Subscription screen. Even eharmony’s own pages describe its quiz as 39, 70 or 80 questions depending on the page; what is consistent is the time, about 20 minutes. When in doubt, the App Store listing and the company’s terms are the sources that stay current.

Nothing stops you from using both: Hinge’s free tier costs nothing while you run eharmony’s quiz and see what your matches look like. Frequently asked questions

Is Hinge or eharmony better for a serious relationship?

Both are built for relationships. eharmony filters harder, with a 20-minute compatibility quiz and long paid plans, so it suits people who want marriage and prefer curated matches. Hinge suits people who want something serious but would rather browse and choose for themselves.

Is eharmony a legitimate dating platform?

Yes. eharmony has run for over 20 years, has a 4.1 rating from 49K ratings on the App Store, and offers an optional SMS Verified badge. Its terms say it does not run criminal background checks, so verify matches with a video call before meeting.

Is anyone still using eharmony?

Yes. In Pew Research Center's 2022 survey, about one in five Americans who have dated online had used eharmony, roughly the same share as Hinge. It is smaller than Hinge on the app stores, but it also runs a full website.

What age group is Hinge best for?

Hinge works best for daters in their 20s and 30s who want a relationship and will write a thoughtful profile. Pew found no significant age difference among daters over 50 for Hinge, so older daters do use it too.

Which is better, Hinge, Match or eharmony?

Hinge is the best free start and suits younger city daters, Match gives the most search control and is popular with daters over 50, and eharmony does the matching for you with a compatibility quiz. My Hinge vs Match and Match vs eharmony comparisons cover the other two pairings.

Is it true that 75% of Tinder users are men?

I could not find a primary source behind the 75% figure, so treat it as unverified. Pew Research Center's 2022 survey found men somewhat more likely than women to have tried online dating (34% vs 27%), but it does not give a gender split for Tinder in the findings checked for this page.
