If it's not clear by now, I have a hard time with labels and I change my mind constantly about EVERYTHING. I'm still figuring out who the heck I am, and sometimes that includes figuring out who I like and where I fall in the gender spectrum - it's a real emotional rollercoaster tbh!
As I was PMSing/venting to my friend about how I get matched with so many men vs women, even though I have my preferences open to both, they suggested I try out some dating apps for queers. I may have told you that in another review but since you may not have read the others, it’s worth mentioning again. As I looked at my friend waiting for an answer on which one to try, I finally heard it escape from their lips - Lex, like one of my fave avenues in Manhattan! (Hellooooo Bloomingdales 😘)
Without asking any more questions, I pulled out my phone and downloaded the Lex app! I’m a bit “take action now, ask questions later” kinda gal.
Lex is a queer-owned and operated dating app for members of the LGBTQ+ community that launched in 2019. From what I was able to learn of its past, it was more of a thirsty hookup app that had a lot of postings for events, meetups, to share writing/thoughts, etc. Somewhat similar to an old magazine, AND it didn’t include pictures!!
It’s since changed and focuses on dating and friendship and allows photos. It’s also pretty VC-backed with a number of investors, including the women-focused Bumble Fund (yes, that Bumble app, led by their COO).
The community it serves is (but not limited to) those who identify as:
Who isn't Lex for? Cisgender men and cis straight couples - I'll catch you on Tinder!
The Lex app is really easy to use. Once I went through one of the fastest signup processes ever (which we’ll get to in a bit), I was automatically in the main feed where I could post, comment, or react to others' posts.
It's not a picture-focused dating app which I loved, because I got to know people based on what's in their hearts and not on their faces. Which, by the way, is the complete opposite of the dating show Naked Attraction that just started airing here in the States! Have you seen it?
Anyway, back to the Lex dating app review.
To use the Lex app:
Right at the jump, Lex screams legit to me at the top of her lungs.
The first step in the signup process was for me to agree to Lex's community guidelines that are based on treating others kindly. Lex's no-nonsense approach to safety, coupled with the fact that it was created by those in the LGBTQ+ gives this app an A+ in my book for legitimacy.
For those who are new to Lex like me, let me introduce it by saying that it's got a great format.
It's laid out to look like old personal ads from the newspapers, so you're left laughing at a bunch of cool posts rather than being left alone with carpal tunnel at the end of the night from swiping so much!
Here's what else I found about Lex:
Posts vs. photos on Lex: These are your ways of connecting in the Lex-iverse. Besides the profile pic you select for yourself, posts are pretty much the only way someone can see who you are - so get out there! You can say what you're looking for or post a missed connection from someone that you met IRL. Throwback to Craigslist, anyone?
I thought Lex didn’t have photos, did that change? Yup, I’ll talk about this later on but you can add photos now. You can still stay anonymous with something called a Lexmoji if you want though!
What is a missed connection: Did you see someone you liked in the outside world, but were too scared to let them know? Lex lets you get a grip on your insecurities and gives you another chance to let the person know how they feel. Hopefully they have the Lex dating app!
How to delete Lex dating app: This is super easy to do! Here's how:
Is Lex a lesbian dating site only? It's not exclusively a lesbian dating site, but there are lesbians on here!
Yes Lex does! Both Android and iOS users can download the app. There is a Lex website, but you can't log in - you can only find out info about the app and company.
I am in love with Lex already due to their easy n’ quick signup process! It was extremely simple to do and I breezed through it! I love how the questions they asked were important but short, and there weren't a ton of them. You get to see for yourself below!
Before I can begin the actual registration process, I get a memo advising me to treat others with dignity and respect. I love this little reminder, even tho it makes me a bit sad that we still need it.
I added my phone number for verification purposes only. No one else will see it, including annoying spammers.
Next up, I had to enter a verification code that was sent to my phone # to prove it's me - which is awesome for safety reasons! And also prevents your friends from signing you up for an account using your info.
Aaaaand enter my email in case I manage to lock myself out - which does tend to happen… oops.
I type in my name for my profile. I notice I have the option to change it later which I don't always see, so yay!
I like how I can also change my username later on if I want to…girl, if you only knew the number of times I wanted to change my OWN name IRL!
Lex asks me to fill in my pronouns. I can choose more than one option, or even type my own in. These can also be changed later on.
I add my DOB knowing that my age and astro sign are gonna show 😬Lex even makes me double down and confirm my age - which makes me question WHO AM I??!!
Next up, I have to add a photo. It doesn’t require more than that like some other apps, and I find comfort in knowing that I can change my profile pic later if I change my mind.
When it asked me to add my location, I clicked on "Don't Allow" to see what happened and got asked if I was sure. I was told that I won't be able to make a post, or see posts from my area. We all know by now how limited free dating memberships are, so I'm choosing to allow my location and take advantage of every post!
And just like that (Did you get the reference there?) I'm in the main feed!
Love how it has a Reddit-inspired feel to it and you can instantly get involved with the Lex community - win/win for me!
Once you’re in, you can also edit your Lex profile and customize things like…
When it comes to filters, Lex keeps it short and sweet which I can appreciate.
I can filter by:
Honestly, this is the most FREE I've felt with any other app. Seriously tho. I haven’t been given any annoying reminders that I'm using a free membership like “PLEASE UPGRADE NOW TO USE ALL THE SHINY THINGS” and I feel like I have access to everything. Which makes me question… IS there even a paid subscription tier?
I was searching and searching, and I couldn't find a payment tier for Lex? It looks like I have access to pretty much everything, and the only paying subscription I could find was Lexplore - a weekly or monthly subscription that lets you create and view posts from anywhere, so you can have new friends before you even arrive at your destination!
If you want to take advantage of this, the pricing is $4.99 for a 1 month pass, and $2.99 for a 1 week pass (at the time of my reviewing it.)
Since there wasn't a paid tier that I could find outside of Lexplore (not mad about THAT!), I'm only going to write about the free tier. I couldn't find anything that was off-limits to me as a free user - YAY!
Here's what I could do:
The main thing that sets Lex apart from other dating sites, is that it's a dating app for the LGBTQ+ to meet and communicate on safely.
Here's what else sets Lex apart:
This dating app was a lot of fun to use, and the posts were interesting enough to keep me around! There were a few things that could be improved on, but Lex did a really good job with this app. So let’s see here…
Here is what really stood out to me (in a good way) about the Lex dating app:
There's not much I didn't like about the Lex app, but here's what I could find:
I absolutely loved this app! I wasn’t around in its heyday, which a lot of people preferred who were OGs, but it was fine for a newbie like me. The sentiment from old users seems to be that they liked the non-photo, text-based, hook-up style
This was the first app where I could do everything without a paid subscription and I sooo took advantage of it. I really liked how this app wasn't pic heavy and instead focused on what others were saying. It felt more interesting to use than just swiping or looking at faces all day long, and reminded me of a social network.
I'm gonna stick around a lil’ more on this app as I love reading all the posts!
