Breeze Review 2026: Legit or Waste of Money?

The Breeze dating app is legit, and it is not a waste of money if you live where it operates and hate small talk: there is no subscription, you only pay a date token when a match turns into a real date, and Breeze books the bar for you. The catch for US readers is that it only runs in New York City, and its strict cancellation rules mean you can lose a token if your plans change. It suits busy, decisive daters in NYC, London and the other European cities it covers; everyone else should look elsewhere.

My verdict: Legit and honest about how it charges, with a clever no-chat model that rewards people who actually show up. Worth a try if you are in New York (or one of its 99 European cities) and want dates rather than pen pals. Skip it if you like to chat first, need detailed filters, or cannot commit to a time a few days ahead.

What is the Breeze dating app, and who runs it?

Breeze calls itself the dating app that skips the chat: "if it is a match, you skip the chat", and the app schedules your first date at one of its partner bars. It was founded in the Netherlands in 2020 by a group of students, including co-founders Marco van der Woude and Marsha Goei, and grew to Brussels in 2023, London and Berlin in 2024 and New York City in 2025. Wikipedia reports more than 2 million downloads and over 737,000 dates arranged as of 2026.

The app is published by Breeze Social B.V. in Rotterdam, according to its Google Play listing. If you sign up in the US, your contract is with a separate company, Breeze Social Inc., based in New York (more on that below). The official site is breeze.social.

Where Breeze is available (and is it closing?)

This is the first thing to check. Breeze's about page lists 100 cities in 7 countries: 46 in the UK, 34 in the Netherlands, 12 in Belgium, 5 in Germany, Paris, Dublin and, in the United States, New York City only. If you live in Chicago, LA or anywhere else in the US, there are no partner bars and no dates to book, so the app is useless to you for now.

People Also Ask "why is the Breeze app closing?", but I found no sign of it. The Android app was updated on September 28, 2026, the iPhone app got a new version in early October 2026, and the about page talks about scaling globally. The confusion probably comes from the app's own freezes (your account can be paused after you cancel) or from Breeze not being live in a given city.

    Who Breeze is for

    • Good fit: people tired of conversations that never turn into a date, anyone who finds texting with strangers draining, and busy professionals who would rather block an evening than chat for a week.
    • Poor fit: people who want to vet someone in conversation first, anyone with strict dealbreakers (filters are limited, which both blog reviews in the top results complain about), and anyone whose schedule changes at the last minute.
    • Not for: anyone under 21 in the US. The US terms set 21 as the minimum age, higher than the 18+ shown on the App Store, because dates take place in bars.

    How Breeze works

Every day at 7 PM, Breeze sends you a handful of profiles it predicts you will like, based on both people's profiles, preferences and behavior in the app. You either like a profile or pass. You cannot see new people until you have dealt with the current batch, and the Breeze FAQ says it only shows profiles that have not seen you yet or have already liked you. You get 15 seconds to undo a like.

When two people like each other, it is a match, and a match is a date. Here is what happens next, with the deadlines from the FAQ:

Timeline of a Breeze date: 7 PM profiles, match, pay and set times within 72 hours, bar revealed, confirm 30 hours before, chat 4 hours before
Deadlines from Breeze's FAQ, checked October 2026.
    1. Pay and give your availability within 72 hours of the match, by ticking the times that work for you. If either of you does not, the match expires.
    2. Breeze books a table at a partner bar and reveals the location a few days ahead. You can switch to another partner bar from 7 days up to 30 hours before the date.
    3. Confirm 30 hours before: Breeze asks both of you for a final yes, and you have until 4 hours before the date to give it.
    4. Chat opens 4 hours before the date and stays open for 5 hours, only so you can find each other or say you are running late.
    5. After the date, Breeze asks for feedback and whether you want to swap phone numbers. Numbers are shared only if you both say yes.

A few extras round it out. Matching pools are groups you join around a shared interest or goal; you only see someone's pool if you are in it too. Sleep mode hides your profile, and a date limit holds back new matches until your next date is done. In London only, Group Dates seat 6 to 10 singles at one table for the same one token.

The top results disagree on one detail: a 2025 New York blog review says chat opened 2 hours before the date, while the FAQ and a 2026 UK review say 4 hours. Go by the FAQ, which is the current rule.

    How much does Breeze cost?

Breeze is free to download and has no subscription and no ads. You pay only when you go on a date, with date tokens. The FAQ says a date "usually ranges from €10 to €15 or the equivalent in your local currency", and that the exact price is on the Date Tokens page inside the app. Breeze does not publish a US dollar price on its website, so check in the app before you match.

    WhatCostNotes
Download, profile, daily profiles, likesFreeNo ads, no premium tier
Drinks date1 date tokenUsually €10 to €15 or local equivalent; covers matchmaking, the booking and a deal on your first drink
Self-organised date (US terms)0.5 tokenYou pick the venue yourself
Group Date (London)1 date tokenToken returned if Breeze cannot seat you
Token packagesDiscounted per dateRefundable only while the package is complete

Prices checked October 2026 in the Breeze FAQ and the US User Terms.

What the drink deal actually is depends on the venue. The FAQ only says the partner offers "a deal on your first drink" and to ask staff which drinks are included. One reviewer in the top results says her first drink was included; another, in New York, says it was 50% off and that a bar with app ordering did not apply it unless she asked. Ask when you arrive.

The model is good value next to subscription apps that bill you every month whether or not you ever meet anyone. If you go on one or two dates a month, you pay for one or two tokens and nothing else.

Cancellations, Breeze Freeze and lost tokens

This is where people feel they wasted money, so read it before you like anyone. A match counts as a date, so canceling a match is canceling a date. Here is what happens to your token in each case, from the FAQ:

    What happensYour tokenOther consequence
Your match cancels or does not pay within 72 hoursBack in your wallet (refundable to your bank if bought singly and within 14 days)None
You cancel before the date is plannedBack in your wallet, not to your bankPossible freeze, lose the Breeze Culture badge
You cancel after the date is plannedLostPossible freeze of 3 days to 1 month
You miss the 30-hour confirmation (by 4 hours before)LostDate cancelled, possible freeze
You ask for a second replan, or replan within 24 hours, and your match declinesLostDate cancelled, possible freeze
You swap numbers in the match chatCounts as deliveredNo refund, Breeze cannot check what happened next
You delete your accountUnused tokens lostAll upcoming dates cancelled

A freeze stops you from seeing new profiles but lets you keep existing dates. Cancel very often and you can be banned, with a warning first. Unused tokens can be refunded to your bank account within 14 days of purchase through the helpdesk. The penalties are the point of the app (they are why the homepage claims under 1% no-shows), but they bite: a June 2026 Telegraph review cited on Wikipedia describes an account frozen for a week after a missed availability deadline. Tip: only like people you would genuinely meet in the next week or two.

    Safety and verification

Breeze's safety design is better than most apps' because the first meeting always happens in public, at a venue whose staff know it is a first date. The homepage lists screened and verified daters, bartenders "looking out for you", account freezes for ghosters and a support team. The helpdesk runs every day from 9:00 to 21:00.

Be clear about what "verified" means, though. The FAQ explains the checkmark as a live selfie that matches the profile photos. That proves the person looks like their pictures; it is not an ID check. The US User Terms say plainly that Breeze does not run criminal background or identity checks on users (it reserves the right to screen against public records, without guaranteeing safety). So treat a Breeze date like any first date: tell a friend where you are going, share your location, plan your way home, and tell bar staff if you feel uncomfortable, all of which Breeze's own FAQ recommends. Because nobody can message you before the date, the usual romance-scam pattern (weeks of chat, then a request for money) has little room to start.

    The US fine print

None of the top results mention that US users sign different terms. The US User Terms (last updated August 20, 2025) are with Breeze Social Inc., 228 East 45th Street, New York, and add three things worth knowing:

    • 21+ only. You must be at least 21 to use Breeze in the US.
    • Arbitration. Disputes go to individual binding arbitration in New York under AAA consumer rules, with no class actions. You can opt out by emailing hello@breeze.social within 30 days of accepting the terms.
    • Refunds go back to the card or bank account you paid with, and you must ask while your account still exists. Delete first and you lose the right to a refund.

    Complaints and ratings

Ratings are split depending on where you look (all checked October 2026):

    • App Store (US): 4.3 out of 5 from 596 ratings (listing).
    • Google Play: 3.9 stars from 15.3K reviews, 1M+ downloads (listing).
    • Trustpilot: 2.1 out of 5 from 247 reviews, 70% of them one-star. Breeze claimed the page in August 2026 and replies to about 19% of negative reviews (Trustpilot).

The recurring complaints on Trustpilot are about money and logistics, not fake profiles: refunds refused or slow after cancellations, charges people did not expect, venues that were far away or too loud, matches that cancelled, and slow support. The positive reviews praise the lack of endless chat and say the venues felt safe. Both blog reviews in the search results add that you cannot filter by things like smoking, and that New York's only location setting is "NYC", so you can be sent across town. One also notes critics who found Breeze led to more first dates but fewer second dates.

    Pros and cons

    • No subscription and no ads: you pay only for dates that are booked.
    • No endless chat or ghosting, and penalties keep no-shows low.
    • Dates at public partner venues where staff know it is a first date.
    • A small daily batch of profiles, which cuts swipe fatigue.
    • Clear, published rules on refunds and cancellations.
    • In the US, New York City only.
    • Few filters, so dealbreakers can slip through.
    • Strict deadlines: miss one and you can lose a token or get frozen.
    • US dollar price not published outside the app.
    • "Verified" means a selfie check, not ID or background checks.
    • The standard date is drinks at a bar, which may not suit non-drinkers (the FAQ says costs can vary for other date types, but drinks is the default).

How to delete your Breeze account

There is no subscription to cancel. To delete your profile, open the Account tab on the right of the app, then My account, then Delete account, per the FAQ. Deleting the app alone does not delete your account. Two warnings: you lose any tokens left in your wallet, and any upcoming dates are cancelled. If you have unused tokens bought in the last 14 days, request a refund through the helpdesk before you delete. If you only need a break, Sleep mode hides your profile without deleting anything.

Breeze vs Hinge and other alternatives

Is Breeze better than Hinge? They solve different problems. Hinge works anywhere in the US, has detailed profiles and lets you chat before you commit; Breeze skips all that and puts you across a table within days. If you are in NYC and your problem is conversations that never turn into dates, Breeze is the better tool. If you want to screen people by conversation or you live outside New York, use Hinge. Other options with a live review here:

    • Coffee Meets Bagel: also sends a small daily batch, but keeps the chat, and works nationwide.
    • Bumble: a big mainstream app if you want volume.
    • Happn: shows people you have crossed paths with, for another "real life first" angle.

    How I rate it

My 3.5 out of 5 is based on public pricing, features, safety tools, app store reputation and value, not on hands-on use. Value for money 4 (no subscription, you pay only for booked dates, though tokens can be lost), safety and verification 3.5 (public venues, selfie check, no-show penalties, but no ID or background checks), evidence of an active user base 3 (1M+ Android downloads and over 737,000 dates, but only one US city), features for its audience 3.5 (planning, venue booking, pools, sleep mode, few filters), transparency 3 (refund and cancellation rules are published in detail, but the US price is only shown in the app and Trustpilot complaints focus on refunds). Average 3.4, rounded to 3.5.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the Breeze dating app any good?

It is good at one thing: turning matches into real dates fast, with no chat and penalties for people who cancel. It has 4.3 stars on the App Store and 3.9 on Google Play, but only 2.1 on Trustpilot, where complaints focus on refunds and logistics. It is worth trying if you live in a city where it runs and hate texting with strangers.

How much does Breeze dating cost?

Breeze is free to download and has no subscription. You pay one date token per date, which Breeze's FAQ says usually costs €10 to €15 or the local equivalent, with discounted token packages. The exact US price is shown on the Date Tokens page inside the app.

Why is the Breeze app closing?

There is no sign that Breeze is closing. Its Android app was updated in late September 2026, the iPhone app in early October 2026, and its about page lists 100 cities in 7 countries. It may simply not be available in your city, since New York City is its only US location.

    Is Breeze better than Hinge?

Breeze is better if your problem is chats that never become dates and you live in New York City, because every match becomes a booked date. Hinge is better if you want to talk first, filter more precisely or live anywhere else in the US.

Is Breeze available in the US?

Only in New York City as of October 2026. The other 99 cities on its list are in the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France and Ireland. In the US you must be at least 21 to use it.
