Amata Review 2026: Legit or Waste of Money?
The Amata dating app is legit: a real, funded AI matchmaking app that skips swiping and chat, pitches you a few people at a time and books a first date for both of you. Whether it is a waste of money depends on where you live and how you date. It is iPhone only, its user base is concentrated in New York City, you pay per date (a token, reported at $16 to $20) or by subscription (Amata Plus, from $34.99 on the App Store), and the Terms make every purchase non-refundable.
What is the Amata dating app, and who runs it?
Amata calls itself a "Matchmaking Club" for "intentional daters only". Instead of a profile you fill in and a deck you swipe, you talk to an AI matchmaker (also called your "Amata"), which builds your bio, pitches you people it thinks fit, and handles the date logistics if you both say yes.
The app is run by Wingmate SAS, the company named in Amata's Terms of Service and listed as the seller on the App Store. Its CEO and founder is Ludovic Huraux, who founded the French dating site Attractive World in 2007 and later the networking app Shapr. Business Insider reported in September 2025 that he founded Amata in 2023, raised $6 million in pre-seed funding led by the VC firm Cassius, tested a beta in Australia, then launched in the US starting with New York, with a team split between New York and Paris. Amata's LinkedIn page lists 17 employees and says the company has organized 15,000 dates in NYC; that last number is Amata's own claim, not an audited figure.
How Amata works
The Amata homepage and App Store listing describe four stages: The Discovery, The Search, The Date and The Debrief. In practice, according to the Terms and the published reviews:
- Sign up and wait: you give your name, contact details (a code is sent to your phone or email) and photos, then land on a waitlist. Two magazine reviewers in the top results were let in within a day or half a day, so the wait looks short in New York; Amata does not publish how it vets people.
- Pick your matchmaker: you choose a cartoon avatar for your AI from a small set (nine, in one reviewer's account). Per ELLE Australia's reviewer, you cannot change it later.
- Talk instead of filling a profile: the AI asks about your life, your values, kids, drinking, deal-breakers and what you want, then writes a short bio it shows to others.
- Intros: it pitches a few people at a time (up to three, per ELLE's reviewer), with a short AI-written description and photos. You can ask it questions about them. Saying yes means agreeing to a real date if they say yes too.
- The date: if it is mutual, each of you uses a token, the AI asks for your availability, picks a slot and books a table at a partner venue. There is no inbox: a chat with your date only opens two hours before you meet.
- The debrief: afterwards, the AI asks how it went and uses that to adjust future intros.
That design is the whole point. Amata's CEO told Business Insider the goal is to "connect as fast as possible in real life without spending time online". It also means you see far fewer people than on Hinge or Bumble, and you go in knowing only what the AI chose to tell you.
Where Amata works, and is there an Android app?
Amata's homepage says "Available on iPhone", the App Store lists it as "Only for iPhone" (iOS 16 or later), and a Google Play search for it in October 2026 returned no Amata app. If you are on Android, there is nothing to download yet.
Amata does not publish a list of cities. Everything public points to New York City: the US launch began there, the company's LinkedIn posts are about NYC dates and East Village events, and its date stats are NYC only. Australia hosted the beta. If you live elsewhere in the US, you can probably sign up, but expect few or no intros.
Who Amata is for (and who should skip it)
- Good fit: New Yorkers with an iPhone who want something serious, hate texting marathons and are happy to commit to a time and place a few days out.
- Poor fit: Android users, anyone outside NYC, people who want to chat or video call before meeting, and people who like browsing lots of profiles themselves.
- Women seeking women: a March 2026 App Store review from a lesbian user says she was pitched straight women and straight men despite correcting the AI, and calls the pool too small. That is one review, but it fits the general complaint that the AI ignores preferences when the pool runs dry.
- Age: the App Store rates it 18+, but Amata's Terms say the app is only for people 21 or older. Go by the Terms.
Is the Amata app free? What you pay, and when
Downloading Amata, getting through the waitlist and talking to the AI cost nothing. You pay at the moment it matters: when a mutual intro turns into a date. The Terms give two ways to pay:
| Option | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Sign-up, AI matchmaker chat, intros |
| Single date token | Not published by Amata; reported at $16 (Business Insider, Sept 2025) and $20 (a Wall Street Journal story Amata's CEO shared on LinkedIn) | One date organized by the AI. Valid 12 months. |
| Amata Plus (Premium) | $34.99, $39.99, $69.99, $79.99, $104.99 or $119.99 on the App Store | Unlimited date tokens, "Premium features" and weekly-refilled extras (custom notes, standout credits), for 1, 3 or 6 months. Auto-renews. |
Prices checked October 2026 on the US App Store listing; plan terms from Amata's Terms of Service (Article 4). The App Store does not say which price buys which term. Going by the 1, 3 and 6 month terms in the Terms, the likely reading is two price levels per term: about $35 to $40 for a month, $70 to $80 for three months (about $23 to $27 a month) and $105 to $120 for six months (about $17.50 to $20 a month). One App Store reviewer says she paid "$35+" for one month, which fits. Check the exact term on the payment screen before you confirm.
The math is simple. If a token costs $16 to $20, one month of Plus pays for itself from your second date that month. If you get one date a month or fewer, which is what the magazine reviewers describe, pay per date. Also note that Business Insider quoted the company saying it planned to raise the token price, so the number you see in the app may be higher than any figure in the press.
What happens if you cancel a date (the token rules)
This is where the press and the fine print disagree. Launch coverage said that if someone cancels on you, you "bank" the token for later. That is true, but only for the person canceled on. Amata's Terms (Article 4.1) are stricter for the person who cancels:

- If you cancel, or reschedule less than 48 hours before: your token is gone, with no refund.
- If they cancel or reschedule late on you: you get your token back.
- If one of you does not confirm in the window (from 9 a.m. the day before to 4 hours before), the date is canceled.
- No slot within 3 weeks: the Terms say failing to find a common time is not grounds for a refund.
- Meeting outside the app (setting it up yourselves) forfeits the token, and sharing your number or handle in your profile to get around the system can get you banned.
- Repeat cancellers: cancel or miss two intros in a row and new intros pause for a few days (the Terms say "seven (5) days", a typo; the CEO told Business Insider seven). Frequent cancelling can also get your account suspended or your Plus renewal refused.
- Tokens expire 12 months after purchase and can never be swapped for cash or credit.
An Instagram commenter under a post about Amata's launch complained that the app "keeps the money" when dates are canceled or rescheduled. Read against the Terms, that is the rule working as written when you are the one who cancels.
Refunds and how to cancel Amata Plus
The Terms say all Premium purchases, tokens and extras are "final and non-refundable", except where a state's law gives you a right to cancel (they name states such as California, Illinois, New York and Ohio, where dating service contracts can often be canceled within about three business days). Amata Plus renews automatically for the same term until you cancel.
- Bought in the iPhone app: cancel in your Apple account's Subscriptions (Apple's steps). Plus stays active until the end of the paid term. For a refund claim, use Apple's refund request, since Amata's Terms send App Store buyers there.
- Bought directly in Amata: cancel in the app's Account or Subscription settings.
- Deleting your account does not cancel an App Store subscription, so cancel first. Account deletion is done in the app; the privacy policy says you can also email contact@amata.ai, and that your data can only be deleted by deleting the account.
Safety, verification and privacy
Amata's format has real safety pluses: there is no endless chat where scammers work on you for weeks, and first dates happen at partner venues the app picks, in public. Its safety page adds the basics: the staff know you are on an Amata date, tell a friend where you are going, use your own transport, watch your drink, and never send money to an intro. What it does not offer:
- No visible verification: nothing in the Terms, safety page or App Store listing describes photo, selfie or ID verification. Sign-up checks a phone number or email. The Terms say Amata may ask for proof when it suspects false information.
- Location is self-declared: an App Store reviewer noticed users may not be where they say, and Amata replied that location "is currently based on user-provided information".
- Report to a human, not the AI: the Terms say reports made to the AI matchmaker are not taken into account. Email contact@amata.ai with evidence, or leave the group chat.
- The AI reads everything: all chats, including the one with your date, are processed by the AI, and the Terms say the app "does not in any way offer a messaging service ensuring the confidentiality of exchanges". They also warn that, through errors, something you told the AI could be shared with another user. The privacy policy says third-party AI services are used and that AI tools "are generally not equipped" to protect sensitive data. Do not tell your matchmaker anything you would not put in a bio.
- Tracking: the App Store privacy label lists precise location, contact info, photos, audio, "sensitive info" and identifiers, with identifiers used to track you across other companies' apps and sites.
The FTC's romance scam guide still applies: anyone who asks for money, gift cards or crypto, or who keeps finding reasons not to meet, is the pattern to walk away from.
Amata reviews and complaints: what users report
On the US App Store, Amata has 4.3 out of 5 from 2.5K ratings (October 2026), and the app gets updates several times a month (version 73.1 shipped on September 23, 2026, "Improvement of the payment flow"). The written reviews and the magazine pieces that rank for this search agree on the good and the bad:
- What people like: no swiping, no small talk, dates that actually happen, close by, in decent venues. A positive App Store reviewer from New York says the dates were easy to set up even with an erratic schedule.
- The AI ignores nuance: ELLE Australia's reviewer found it reduced her preferences to two (serious, no kids) and pitched her gym fans instead of kind and witty men; it also told a match she was writing a novel when she had only said she would like to. An Instagram commenter says it "ignores" stated preferences daily, and the lesbian App Store reviewer says the same.
- Thin profiles: some users have very few photos and short AI bios, and one reviewer noticed the bio others saw was different from the one shown to them.
- Clunky app: no saved list of matches; you scroll back through the AI chat to find who you said yes to.
- Few matches outside peak: ELLE's reviewer got one match in a few weeks. Dazed's reviewer got one date that went fine but without a spark, which is how plenty of first dates go on any app.
Note that one 5-star App Store reviewer says Amata offered "a token gift" for the review, so treat the rating as a rough signal.
Pros and cons
Pros
- No swiping and no texting limbo: a yes leads straight to a booked date.
- Free to join and to talk to the matchmaker; you pay only when a date is set.
- Public partner venues and short pre-date chats cut the room scammers usually need.
- Cancellation rules punish flakes and protect the person stood up.
- Actively developed by a funded team with dating industry experience.
Cons
- iPhone only, and in practice a New York app.
- Token price not published by Amata, and Plus terms unlabeled on the App Store.
- Everything is non-refundable; cancel a date yourself and the token is gone.
- The AI misreads preferences, and a small pool makes it worse (especially for women seeking women).
- No photo or ID verification, self-declared location, and chats that are not confidential.
- Terms say 21+, the App Store says 18+.
Amata alternatives
- Breeze: the closest model: no chat, a fee only when a match becomes a date, venue booked for you. Also in New York.
- Hinge: if you want serious dating but prefer to read profiles and chat first.
- eHarmony: compatibility-based matching, for people who like the "we pick for you" idea but live outside New York or use Android.
- Cerca: free, iPhone only, and limited to friends of friends, another way to meet someone semi-vetted in a big city.

How I rate it
My 3 out of 5 is based on public pricing, features, safety tools, app store reputation and value, not on hands-on use. Value for money 2.5 (free to start and a token is cheaper than most premium tiers, but nothing is refundable and cancelling costs you), safety and verification 3 (public venues, short pre-date chat and anti-flake rules, but no visible photo or ID verification, self-declared location and AI-read chats), evidence of an active user base 3 (2.5K App Store ratings, frequent updates, funding and a claimed 15,000 NYC dates, but one city and one platform), features for its audience 3.5 (a genuinely different, end-to-end date-setting service that does what it promises), transparency 2.5 (token price missing from official pages, unlabeled Plus prices, 21+ vs 18+). Average 2.9, rounded to 3.

Amata does not publish its single token price; the press has reported $16 and $20 per date. Amata Plus appears on the US App Store at $34.99 to $119.99 for 1, 3 or 6 months (prices checked October 2026), and all purchases are non-refundable under its Terms.
How long does the waitlist last on Amata?
Amata does not publish a waitlist time. Two magazine reviewers in New York were let in within a day or half a day. Outside New York, expect fewer or no intros even once you are in.
