Alright, so I've been on a mission lately: find a decent dating site for us geeky, nerdy people who prefer video games and books over sports and shopping. IMHO, it hasn't been easy, which I find a little weird. Most of my "nerdy" friends are tech obsessed, so it shouldn't be so hard to find a site with cool designs and unique features, right? Let's see if I was able to get my geek on, or if my mission continues…
Up front, Geeky Friends Date mentions that they’re completely free so they’re ad-supported. This gives me a sense of what to expect in terms of user interface, and I appreciate that they mention they’re ad-supported right away. They’re also part of the “Friends Date Network” (FDN) but I’m unable to easily see what other dating sites are part of it?
Overall, the homepage doesn’t say much about GeekyFriendsDate.com except that it’s for a variety of different passions in the geek space. There weren’t a ton of Geeky Friends Date reviews out there, so let’s see if this dating site is still active and a hidden gem, or one that’s not quite as exciting anymore.
K! Let’s dive into my Geeky Friends Date review together.
The Geeky Friends Date is an international geek dating site for people who are into sci-fi, video games, astronomy technology, etc. and are looking to meet people with similar interests. Geeky Friends Date is ad supported, but the plus side to that is full membership is 100% FREE!!
Launched in 2013, people from all over the world including the US, U.K., and Australia can sign up, but when I was registering, only 290 members were online at the time. This number does change, which is a good sign, because it was 105 next time I came back.
As I mentioned earlier, Geeky Friends Date is also a part of the Friends Date Network (FDN) , which operates more than 120 free dating sites in various categories and is located in Oregon.
Who is Geeky Friends Date best for?
✔️ Single men and women who are interested in dating other single people.
✔️ Those with passions that are considered geeky (gaming, sci-fi, astronomy, etc.)
✔️ People who are interested in a free dating site.
✔️ People who are looking for friends with similar interests.
Who is Geeky Friends Date not great for?
✖️ Singles looking to date couples.
✖️ Couples who are swingers.
✖️ Singles that feel more comfortable with profile verification (there is none!)
✖️People looking for extensive features.
Once you go through the (very quick!!) sign up process, you’re able to browse for members that are recommended to you (in the main feed, or using the “Match Me” option. Once you find someone you like, you can ask to “meet” them, give them a wink, add them as a favorite, or message them.
And… that’s about it. It’s a pretty simple site, but remember, it’s free! I find it weird that I can’t search by interest, since geeky dating is their big focus. Hmm.
One thing you’ll likely want to do is go into settings and uncheck all the networks that your profile is automatically pulled into. As you can see below, there are a lot of different ones that are turned on. (I unchecked them all after this)
Geeky Friends Date is part of a larger network, the Friends Date Network, so that helps with their authenticity since they have experience in owning and operating over 120 dating sites. It's important to note that the site can be used without confirming your email address, but even with that, only 290 people were online, so it's not like there's a ton of people running around with unconfirmed emails. If an account seems suss, I can block or report the user.
UPDATE: during the signup process, I was taken to this page, which has me now questioning the legitimacy of Geeky Friends Date (why is it not secure?!):
I went back to the homepage and noticed it wasn’t https:// so that made me kinda skeptical about the overall security of the site. Normally I would think twice about signing up at this point, but at this point I’m committed to signing up and sharing what I find.
My first impression was…where's the layout? The homepage is literally a blank screen with an outdated registration form and tacky ads. It took a few refreshes to even get the proper styled layout.
Here's what else I noticed about Geeky Friends Date:
My curiosity always gets the better of me, so here's the questions I couldn't wait to figure out while working on this GeekyFriendsDate.com review.
How to delete Geeky Friends Date account: Deleting your Geeky Friends Date account is easy! Just login to your account, go to the settings page, and click on the "Delete My Account" button.
Is Geeky Friends Date free to use? The Geeky Friends Date dating site is completely free to use since most of their revenue comes from their ads.
I need to contact customer support: according to Geekyfriendsdate.com, their customer support team is available from 9am-5pm during the week. Just click on the "contact us" link and fill out the contact form.
Is my Geeky Friends Date profile public? I was able to search members when I was logged out (even before signing up) so yes, they’re publicly viewable. I haven’t found a way to turn this off…
Does Geeky Friends Date have profile verification? Nope, sorry. I’m a big fan of verification so I didn’t like that the option wasn’t there, for myself or others.
📱No!
There is no mobile app for Geeky Friends Date (their point is why bother with installing yet ANOTHER app when you can use it right on your phone…?) but my phone is a lil crowded with apps anyway so I'm fine with this.
🐇Super fast! Less than 5 min.
The signup process for Geeky Friends Date is pretty outdated, but convenient. The registration form is right on the homepage, so it was easy to get started. Here's what's involved:
1. I select my gender (either man or woman), who i'm looking for (same options), my DOB, email address, and a confirmation that I'm not a robot, and over 18 YO. I can also sign up with my Facebook account.
BTW, I've never seen this before, so it gets its own special section: the DOB field's earliest year is…get ready for this…1998!!!! So it sucks for us Gen Zrs born after the 2000s who are basically forced to lie about our ages.
BTW, the sign up kept going from being partially unstyled like this, to being regular looking again.
2. The next signup step is to fill out a semi-lengthy form…it was long enough that I had to separate it into 2 diff screen shots!
The first part is where I create my account with my username and password, and fill in some quick deets about my location and age range that I'm interested in.
3. The second part of the signup form is where I upload my profile pic (I have to choose a min of 3 pics), including one full body image. It mentions that uploading pics containing images of cartoons or nature will result in account closure, while pics containing nudity will result in an immediate ban. There's also some more qs to fill out:
Btw, they say you need three photos, but I bypassed with only one initially.
3. Ha! It yelled at me after that last screen and told me to add at least 3 pics again, but I could still use the site so I'm not sure they enforce it. I love the guidelines, especially #2! LOL!
On this screen, I was also able to browse online members or look for singles in any area. Clicking anything here will take me to my main feed.
One of my favorite parts of the signup process (besides finishing!) is seeing what the main feed looks like. Just like when meeting someone IRL, first impressions are everything, and a site's main feed can give you a good idea of what to expect.
The main feed for Geeky Friends Date is a pretty accurate representation of the site - outdated, plain, and lacking energy. What Geekyfriendsdate doesn't lack? Ads!!
From the main feed I could do or view the following:
One thing I noticed right away is the members in the feed are nowhere near my current location, so that doesn’t look very promising. I decided to click into and check out some of the recommended profiles anyway.
BTW, I was unable to login using my laptop for some reason after my initial sign up, so these next few pics were taken on my phone.
The profiles on the Geeky Friends Date dating site are pretty plain and boring – definitely not doing the geeks any justice here.
The good news is that the profiles have enough info to get a good idea of what someone is like, and most of the users on here have a profile pic (or more than one!). Here's what I was able to view on someone's profile:
I could also view what they wrote about themselves, what they're looking for, and can even send a quick message! One thing I didn’t like was how we couldn’t add interests in our profiles. How am I supposed to know who likes the geeky things I do?!
Searching for others is the easiest and fastest way to find a match! Here's what I was able to search by:
You can filter the results by “best match” “last online” and “newest” and… that’s pretty much it? As I mentioned before, I’m surprised there aren’t more profile features, like adding interests or hobbies, because that would make searching for a geeky date much easier. This feels very limiting.
Another way to find members on Geeky Friends Date is to use the “Match Me” feature and let the algo gods find someone for you. This is also referred to as “Let’s Meet.”
Here you can click Yes, Maybe, or No, plus view their profile.
✅Free membership!
Absolutely, in fact, it's 100% FREE!! I was able to use all of the features.
Most dating sites have a free membership and one that you need to pay for in order to access the extras. Not with Geeky Friends Date! Here, everything is free to use, so I don't need to figure out which subscription is better than the other, because there's only one option, and it's FREE!
Let’s run through a Geeky Friends Date review of the freebie features.
The best thing about the Geeky Friends Date dating site is that it's totally free to use! This means that EVERYTHING is included in the site for free, meaning I was able to:
And that’s it. Interestingly enough, there’s no profile verification available.
Normally this is where I'd tell you about the perks of paying to use a dating site, except Geeky Friends Date made their entire site free!! This doesn't always happen with dating sites, so enjoy while you can!
It can be tough out there in the world of online dating, so you want to make sure you're setting yourself up for success and not an epic dating fail. I always take advantage of a site's unique features since this is what separates dating sites from each other. Here's what made Geeky Friends Date special:
While everyone loves a good dating site, they can be hard to find. There's sooo many dating sites that are just meh, and who has time for that?! I put on my lil detective hat and got to work to see if Geeky Friends Date is worth checking out…or not.
When checking out Geeky Friends Date, I saw a few things that made me go "ooh - cool!"...here's what they were:
No one is perfect, including geek dating sites! Here's where I felt Geeky Friends Date missed the mark:
I also noticed that this was in the Terms of Service:
8.2 You grant to us a worldwide, irrevocable, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to use, reproduce, store, adapt, publish, translate and distribute your content in any existing or future media / reproduce, store and publish your content on and in relation to this website and any successor website / reproduce, store and, with your specific consent, publish your content on and in relation to this website.
This sounds like they can use whatever is in your profile for marketing purposes? Not. a. fan.
My first and final thought after using the site and working on this Geeky Friends Date review is to hire a geek to trick out this site! We need some catchy graphics, anime, nods to the nerd-isphere, anything!! This homepage (and lack of SSL) doesn't do the site justice and may even deter more users from signing up. First impressions are everything, and this site came off as less geeky and more...freaky (in a not fun, creepy kinda way).
I noticed some members weren’t active in the past year, and there wasn’t much action going on. If you’re looking for some other geek dating or gamer dating sites, I’d check these out. After doing a number of dating reviews it’s clear that a niche like this will have a smaller user base than most, and these at least have more active users and different features to try out:
