Raya Review 2026: Legit or Waste of Money?
Raya is a legit dating app: a real, invite-style private community run by Raya App Inc since 2015, with a 4.0-star App Store rating from 16K ratings (October 2026). It is not a scam and it is not a waste of money if you get in, since membership starts at $24.99 and membership fees only start once you are accepted. The catch is getting in: the dating app Raya is iPhone only, it wants referrals from current members, and review can take anywhere from a day to a few months, so it suits well-connected people in creative and professional circles, not someone who just wants more matches.
What Raya is and who runs it
Raya describes itself on the App Store as “a private global community designed to help members discover meaningful connections anywhere in the world”, for dating, friendship or professional networking. Membership is by application only. The seller is Raya App Inc. The app was founded by Daniel Gendelman and went live in February 2015, according to Wikipedia, and it is still maintained: version 5.39.0 came out on October 1, 2026.
Its official site, rayatheapp.com, is bare on purpose. There is no pricing page, no blog and no help center you can browse, just an application form, an About page and the legal pages. Everything below comes from those pages and the App Store listing, not from using the app.
Who Raya is for (and who should skip it)
Raya is famous as the “celebrity dating app”, and the top results lean hard on that. The reality is broader. Raya’s About page says its committee looks for people whose work or way of spending time “stands out as creative”, people with real ties to existing members, and “that hard to describe something extra”, citing NASA scientists, cancer researchers, poets and painters who got in with no one to vouch for them. So yes, a normal person can get on Raya, but “normal” here usually means someone with a visible creative or professional life and friends already inside.
- Good fit: creatives, founders, people in media, tech, fashion, music or film, and anyone who travels and wants to meet vetted people in other cities. Also people who value privacy over volume.
- Poor fit: Android users (there is no Android app), anyone without friends on Raya to refer them, and anyone who wants a large pool of nearby matches every day.
- Not for: people who lead with money. The About page lists “consistent displays of excessive shows of wealth” as a reason to turn an applicant down, which is worth knowing if you found Raya while looking at wealthy dating sites.
Is Raya a hookup app? Not by design. It sells itself on meaningful connections, friendship and networking, and its terms ban harassment and soliciting payment from other members. What people do with matches is up to them, but if casual dating is your main goal, the apps in our hookup dating sites guide are built for it and far easier to join.
How to get on Raya
You can start an application in the iPhone app or on the web at rayatheapp.com/apply. The form asks for your name, date and place of birth, where you live, your occupation and employer, an email address, your Instagram username, and a phone number you verify with a code. Then the process runs like this:
- Apply. Fill in the form. Raya’s About page says applications are assessed with “algorithmic values” plus input from “hundreds of committee members” who are anonymous to each other.
- Add referrals. The application page says applications with referrals are more likely to be accepted, and referrals are added from the iPhone app. The About page goes further: “It’s why applications require referrals.” In practice, a member who knows you is your best bet.
- Wait for review. Raya says decisions take “anywhere from a day to a few months”.
- Accepted or waitlisted. If you are accepted, you choose a paid plan and get the app. If not, you go on a waitlist that Raya says it reviews continually, with a push notification if your status changes.

The application page states plainly that “Raya currently isn’t available on Android”. If you are accepted, you need an Apple device to use your membership. There is no Raya listing on Google Play either, so ignore any “Raya APK” you see.
The waitlist numbers don’t add up
You will see confident figures online: Google’s AI summary says the waitlist is “around 2.5 million people”, one competitor blog says 1.5 million in 2023 and an 8% acceptance rate. Raya publishes none of these numbers on its site or its App Store listing, and the sources contradict each other, so treat them as rumors. The only timing Raya commits to is “a day to a few months”, and “days to months” on the App Store. Plan for months and keep your expectations low until you have a referral.
How matching and messaging work
Once you are in, the App Store listing names three ways to find people: Daily Recommendations, Maps (people nearby or in a city you are visiting) and a Directory. You can use Raya for dating, for friends, or for work contacts. Profiles are built around photos and an Instagram link, your background and profession, according to Wikipedia’s summary of the app. The App Store also sells Extra Likes, but Raya does not publish how many likes come with a membership.
Two things to keep in mind. First, the pool is small by design, so in smaller cities you may run out of people fast. Second, matches on a curated app are not dates: a matchmaking blog that ranks for Raya, passing on one member’s account, says matches turned into real dates less often than expected.
How much Raya costs
Applying is free. Once accepted, you pay a membership; Raya’s About page says new members are asked to pay “monthly membership fees”, and the App Store description says members can choose a 1, 6 or 12 month auto-renewing plan. These are the US App Store prices:
| What you buy | Price (US) | What we know |
|---|---|---|
| Application | $0 | Apply in the app or on the web |
| Membership | $24.99 | Lowest membership price listed; auto-renews |
| Membership | $113.99 | Longer term; the listing does not say which |
| Raya+ Membership | $49.99 | Higher tier; benefits not published |
| Skip the Wait | $7.99 (3 for $19.99, 5 for $29.99) | Not explained on Raya’s public pages |
| Direct Request | $4.99 (3 for $12.99) | Not explained on Raya’s public pages |
| 30 Extra Likes | $10.99 | More likes |
Prices checked October 2026 on the Raya App Store listing. The listing names each item but not its term or exact benefits, and Raya has no pricing page. Before you buy Raya+ or any add-on, read what the in-app purchase screen says it includes; if it does not say, don’t buy it.
Is $24.99 a lot? For a dating app, it is mid-range, and you only pay once you know you are in. The add-ons are where the money goes, and the terms say the company can change prices and create new tiers at any time.
Refunds, auto-renewal and how to cancel
This is the part none of the top results mention, and it matters. Raya’s Terms of Use say:
- Payments renew automatically until you cancel, and all purchases go through your Apple account.
- Membership fees and in-app purchases are “final and non-refundable”, and unused purchases or unused subscription time are not refunded when a membership ends or is terminated.
- Raya can suspend or remove a member at any time and for many reasons, including behavior outside the app.
- Residents of Arizona, California, Connecticut, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, New York, North Carolina, Ohio and Wisconsin may cancel without penalty before midnight of the third business day after signing up.
- Disputes go to binding arbitration with the American Arbitration Association (small claims court is the exception), and class actions are waived.
The About page adds two details: if you cancel, you keep access until the end of your billing cycle, and if your membership lapses you “may be asked to reapply”, since renewal and readmission are not guaranteed. Think twice before letting it expire if it took you months to get in.
Cancel your subscription
- On your iPhone, open Settings and tap your name.
- Tap Subscriptions, then Raya.
- Tap Cancel Subscription. If the button is missing, it is already canceled. (Steps from Apple Support.)
- If you were charged by mistake, you can ask Apple, not Raya, for a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com (Apple’s refund guide). Raya’s terms say it does not refund, so Apple is your only route.
Delete your Raya account
Raya’s Privacy Policy says you can delete your account at any time from within the app. Cancel the Apple subscription first, since Apple, not Raya, handles the billing. If you only want a break, the privacy policy describes a “paused” status instead.
Safety, privacy and verification
Vetting is Raya’s main safety tool, and its own pages describe more checks than most dating apps:
- Age and identity: Raya is 18+, and the About page says it “very often” IDs applicants to confirm it. Applications also need a verified phone number and an Instagram username.
- Privacy controls: the privacy policy describes a “hide” feature and a “paused” status that stop new members from seeing your profile, plus “social mode” and location services you can switch off. Only accepted members can see your profile, and waitlisted applicants cannot see who is a member.
- Screenshots banned: the terms forbid taking screenshots or sharing content from the app and disclosing who is a member. Wikipedia notes a first screenshot triggers a warning and repeats can get you removed.
- No money requests: the terms ban soliciting payment from other members. Anyone on Raya who asks you for money, gift cards or crypto is breaking the rules: stop talking and report them.
- Reporting: members are encouraged to report disrespectful behavior. Raya claims it receives reports in about 1 out of 11,000 connections; that is the company’s own figure and nobody audits it.
Vetting lowers the odds of fake profiles, but it is not a guarantee: the About page itself admits “mistakes will be made” and that some members turned out differently from what the committee expected. The usual rules still apply. Meet in a public place, tell a friend where you are going, and never send money to someone you met online.
Fake profiles and complaints
On the App Store, Raya has 4.0 out of 5 stars from 16K ratings (October 2026), a solid score for a dating app. The complaints in the search results are less about scams and more about expectations: forum and social media commenters call it overrated, say many members are ordinary people rather than famous ones, and grumble about the wait. None of the top results document a pattern of fake profiles, and Raya’s screening makes mass fake accounts harder than on open apps.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Every member is screened, with frequent ID checks and phone verification.
- Strong privacy rules: screenshots banned, hide and pause options, profiles visible only to members.
- Dating, friends and networking in one app, with a map for meeting people when you travel.
- Applying is free and the base membership is $24.99.
- 4.0 stars from 16K App Store ratings and a fresh update in October 2026.
Cons
- iPhone only, no Android app.
- Hard to join without referrals, and review can take months.
- Raya+ and the add-ons are sold without a public list of what they do.
- Everything is non-refundable, and a lapsed membership may mean reapplying.
- Small pool: fewer people nearby than on mainstream apps.
Is the dating app Raya worth it?
- You have an iPhone and know two or three members: apply. It costs nothing to try, and the base plan is reasonable.
- You were accepted: start with the cheapest membership and skip Raya+ and add-ons until the app tells you what they include.
- You are on Android: don’t bother, you can’t use it even if accepted.
- You want a relationship and lots of options in your city: a mainstream app will get you further, faster.
- You want to date wealthy or high-earning singles: Raya is the wrong tool; it screens out wealth-signaling. Look at dedicated sites instead.

How I rate it
I give Raya 3 out of 5. That rating is based on public pricing, features, safety tools, app store reputation and value, not on hands-on use. Value for money: 2.5 (a fair $24.99 base price, but paid extras with no published benefits and no refunds). Safety and verification: 4 (committee vetting, frequent ID checks, phone verification, screenshot ban, hide and pause). Evidence of an active user base: 3.5 (16K App Store ratings and an October 2026 update, but no member count published). Features for its audience: 3.5 (recommendations, map and directory for dating, friends and work, but iPhone only). Transparency: 2 (vague admission criteria, no pricing page, unlabeled plans, and a waitlist that can run months).
Frequently asked questions
Can a normal person get on Raya?
Yes. Raya's About page says its committee has accepted people with no one to vouch for them, such as scientists, poets and painters. In practice your chances are much better with referrals from current members and a visible creative or professional life. You also need an iPhone.
How much does it cost to join Raya?
Applying is free. On the US App Store in October 2026, membership costs $24.99 or $113.99 and Raya+ Membership $49.99, with add-ons such as Skip the Wait from $7.99. Plans auto-renew and Raya's terms say all payments are non-refundable.
How do you get on Raya?
Apply in the iPhone app or at rayatheapp.com/apply with your details, Instagram username and a verified phone number. Add referrals from members in the app, since Raya says referrals make acceptance more likely. A committee reviews you, which takes from a day to a few months, and you are either accepted or waitlisted.
Is Raya a good app for dating?
It is good if you value privacy and a small, vetted pool, and if you already have friends on it. It is a poor choice if you want lots of nearby matches, use Android, or need a quick start. Matches on a curated app also turn into dates less often than people expect.
Is Raya a hook up app?
Not by design. Raya presents itself as a private community for dating, friendship and networking, and its terms ban harassment and soliciting payment from members. If casual dating is your goal, apps built for it are easier to join.
What is the #1 dating app right now?
There is no single best app; it depends on what you want. For a relationship, Hinge is the one most people should try first. Raya is for well-connected iPhone users who want a small, private, vetted network.
