Usually I take reccos from my girlfriends on dating sites, but since they’re not really ~gamers~ like me, I’ve been on my own trying to find a boo that games. (Ok, maybe I’m not a full-on gamer, but I do GAME ok?! Lol.) I’m excited to dive into the LFGdating review, but first off let me just say… the people on the homepage image above do not look like gamers. 😆
Was my time on LFGdating fruitful? Were a lot of the gamer dating profiles real or were they trying to pull a fast one on me? Did it feel ~safe~ for women?
Let’s dive into my LFGdating review and find out.
The name “LFGdating” is super fun – at first I thought it stood for “ Let’s F*cking Go” or “ Let’s F*cking Game” but apparently it’s “ Looking For Group.” While not as fun as I initially assumed, it’s catchy. And in case you were curious, no, it’s not for swingers or group dating despite the tagline sounding like it. The user base seems to only be looking for one-on-one connections here.
LFGdating was launched in 2013, so it’s been around for quite some time. The creators of LFGdating are gamers themselves and created it out of their own need – now, whether or not this story is true is anyone’s guess, but the overall background of the site was interesting
I wasn’t able to validate exactly how many users were on the site, but they’ve mentioned thousands of users. The reason why it’s not millions yet? Aside from being super niche, they also draw a line in the sand when it comes to fake profiles and try to keep all users 100% real
Yep, I’d say so. They seem to really be doing the work to keep our fake profiles/scammers. They’re also open with their story and who their parent company is (Glassboot Ventures) which you don’t see with a lot of dating sites.
I wasn’t contacted by potential matches that felt… sketchy… and everyone did indeed seem like real people. I didn’t have any cancellation issues when I wanted to turn off my premium subscription after a few months, which is often a worry I have when signing up for paid memberships.
From the user interface to the search capabilities, LFGdating is more focused on actually connecting gamers by likes and similarities than some of the other ones I tried, like Girl Gamer Dating for instance.
The nice thing about LFGdating is even if it feels a bit minimal, I was immediately sent an email when I signed up saying the dating site is going through an overhaul and being refreshed! I love when sites constantly work to improve features, rather than having a “set it and forget it” mentality.
My initial impressions were…
Some things you may be curious about before signing up for LFGdating:
How to delete LFGdating profile: Super simple, with a nice red button. Go to “more” then “settings” and click “Delete my account” at the bottom.
Are there verified profiles on LFGdating? Yup! I actually tried to click this link while setting up my profile and it didn’t work, so I’m not sure if that feature is still available though.
Is there a paid account for LFGdating? Yes. They have a “Premium” subscription, with a discount if you sign up for 3 months, or a full year, as opposed to just monthly
Is there a free trial for LFG Dating? No, they don’t have a free trial.
Does my subscription cancel when I delete LFGdating profile? Unfortunately no, if you signed up via a mobile app for the subscription, you’ll have to make sure that’s canceled also
Yes and YES. LFGdating has an app available on iOS and Android, so you can look for your matches on the go. The mobile app has a few different options and features which I cover below, so take a look before deciding whether to sign up and use the web version or app.
The sign up process was pretty straight forward. I didn’t learn this until afterwards, but if you sign up and use the LFGdating app as opposed to the site, you have access to way more profile options you can add. I noticed this with iOS, but since I don’t have an Android I can’t say if it’s the same there or not.
K! Onto the sign up flow.
First up, use the sign up box to enter a username, email address and password.
After that, I was taken to a screen to add a profile photo. Some gamer dating sites let you bypass this and create a profile without a pic, so I appreciated this being a requirement.
After I uploaded a photo, I could add some other information, like what my gender identity and sexual preference was (inclusive options for both!) along with where I was located.
Next up, I could start using their match filters to find gamers near me that fit what I’m looking for. This seemed to act like my main feed as opposed to having a full personal homepage like some other dating sites.
We’ll get into what the match filters have to offer in the next section. One thing I noticed immediately was “Gaming Personality” which had options like “Shy and silent” “Speak when needed” and other characteristics.
This was nice since I don’t really want a domineering gamer to date. I could look for a fun, sarcastic one.
Btw! Don’t miss out on the extra profile questions once you’re done. The sign up flow doesn’t take you through all of them and I almost missed them until I went back into my profile on the top navigation bar.
After trying out the app afterwards, I DID notice the profile options on iOS (not sure about Android) were more extensive than the web version, and included things like:
There were quite a number of others, too. 🤔 I guess if you want to have these added, grab the iOS or Android app and have at it.
Ok, up next… let’s review the search capabilities
There doesn’t appear to be a main “home” feed here for users after you sign up on LFGdating, just the “match” page I showed you earlier.
The search capabilities on LFGdating is a bit more extensive than some of the other gamer dating sites. While it doesn’t go super in-depth like Kippo, it lets you search by,
The console search filter was nice because I could find matches to game with using the same device. And also, much like Pepsi vs. Coke and iPhone vs. Android… there’s friendly competition between Xbox and PlayStation players, lol.
Another thing I noticed on the site was this, down by the footer:
While it isn’t a search filter per-say, they give you a few category-based landing pages to see who is likely to be on the LFGdating site. This won’t return any matches, but they have to be popular enough to be listed there, right? RIGHT?! (*secretly dreams of a match who plays D&D*)
Yep, LFGdating is free to use, though if you want unlimited access to messaging and a few other features, you’ll have to pony up for the premium subscription.
There wasn’t that big of a difference between free and premium since features are fairly limited to begin with, but let’s get right into it.
The free membership lets you do everything from setting up your profile to searching. Overall, LFGdating is fairly basic in functionality with no extra bells and whistles. I could…
And… that’s about it. *shrug.*
They did say in a recent blog post that things like “winks” are coming, so hopefully they keep expanding features.
The premium membership has a few different tiers, which the image above breaks down nicely.
Prices are (at the time of this blog post):
You essentially get the following features:
The only difference in the LFGdating premium subscription tiers is a discount for buying 3 months or a yearly plan in one go vs. just the monthly. If you’re in it for the long-ish haul, paying for the 3 month plan may be the way to go. It’s the perfect amount of time to try out the features, but not a huge commitment. We love a good discount and being commitment-free… most of the time. 💁♀
But I did notice something else that I wanted to point out…
When I was on the iPhone app, I noticed the subscriptions were cheaper. I’m not sure if I was in some sort of promotion loop, or if it’s like this all the time but… worth checking out on the app itself before committing to paying higher from the web.
Since this gamer dating site was a little light on features, there isn't too much that sets it apart. That’s not necessarily a bad thing though, if the focus is in the right place!
What I felt set it apart was,
After spending a bit of time on LFGdating, here’s what I ended up liking and where I thought there could be some improvement.
Overall, the site itself has the features needed to match with other gamer hotties, and a great filtering system for this particular niche. I didn’t feel like I was put in any compromising positions or dealing with spam profiles, so I felt safe navigating it.
While it didn’t seem to be as active as other sites like DatePlayer2, I did get some great matches sent to my inbox and made some interesting connections.
Did I take any of my matches offline and meet them IRL? That’s for me to know ;)
