What is LFGdating and who is it for?
The name “LFGdating” is super fun – at first I thought it stood for “
Go” or “
Game” but apparently it’s “
Group.” While not as fun as I initially assumed, it’s catchy. And in case you were curious, no, it’s not for swingers or group dating despite the tagline sounding like it. The user base seems to only be looking for one-on-one connections here.
LFGdating was launched in 2013, so it’s been around for quite some time. The creators of LFGdating are gamers themselves and created it out of their own need – now, whether or not this story is true is anyone’s guess, but the overall background of the site was interesting
I wasn’t able to validate exactly how many users were on the site, but they’ve mentioned thousands of users. The reason why it’s not millions yet? Aside from being
niche, they also draw a line in the sand when it comes to fake profiles and try to keep all users 100% real
Is LFGdating legit?
Yep, I’d say so. They seem to really be doing the work to keep our fake profiles/scammers. They’re also open with their story and who their parent company is (Glassboot Ventures) which you don’t see with a lot of dating sites.
I wasn’t contacted by potential matches that felt… sketchy… and everyone did indeed seem like real people. I didn’t have any cancellation issues when I wanted to turn off my premium subscription after a few months, which is often a worry I have when signing up for paid memberships.
The TL;DR on LFGdating
From the user interface to the search capabilities, LFGdating is more focused on actually connecting gamers by likes and similarities than some of the other ones I tried, like Girl Gamer Dating for instance.
The nice thing about LFGdating is even if it feels a bit minimal, I was immediately sent an email when I signed up saying the dating site is going through an overhaul and being refreshed! I love when sites constantly work to improve features, rather than having a “set it and forget it” mentality.
My initial impressions were…
- Easy/clear signup process
- Aesthetically minimal, but in a nice way
- Lots of options for my profile related to gaming
- A blog that’s updated with what’s to come for LFGdating
- Founders seem focused on trustworthy profiles and reducing spam
Some things you may be curious about before signing up for LFGdating:
How to delete LFGdating profile:
Super simple, with a nice red button. Go to “more” then “settings” and click “Delete my account” at the bottom.
Are there verified profiles on LFGdating?
Yup! I actually tried to click this link while setting up my profile and it didn’t work, so I’m not sure if that feature is still available though.
Is there a paid account for LFGdating?
Yes. They have a “Premium” subscription, with a discount if you sign up for 3 months, or a full year, as opposed to just monthly
Is there a free trial for LFG Dating?
No, they don’t have a free trial.
Does my subscription cancel when I delete LFGdating profile?
Unfortunately no, if you signed up via a mobile app for the subscription, you’ll have to make sure that’s canceled also
Is there an LFGdating app?
Yes and YES. LFGdating has an app available on iOS and Android, so you can look for your matches on the go. The mobile app has a few different options and features which I cover below, so take a look before deciding whether to sign up and use the web version or app.
What’s the sign up process like for LFGdating?
The sign up process was pretty straight forward. I didn’t learn this until afterwards, but if you sign up and use the LFGdating app as opposed to the site, you have access to way more profile options you can add. I noticed this with iOS, but since I don’t have an Android I can’t say if it’s the same there or not.
K! Onto the sign up flow.
First up, use the sign up box to enter a username, email address and password.
After that, I was taken to a screen to add a profile photo. Some gamer dating sites let you bypass this and create a profile without a pic, so I appreciated this being a requirement.
After I uploaded a photo, I could add some other information, like what my gender identity and sexual preference was (inclusive options for both!) along with where I was located.
Next up, I could start using their match filters to find gamers near me that fit what I’m looking for. This seemed to act like my main feed as opposed to having a full personal homepage like some other dating sites.
We’ll get into what the match filters have to offer in the next section. One thing I noticed immediately was “Gaming Personality” which had options like “Shy and silent” “Speak when needed” and other characteristics.
This was nice since I don’t really want a domineering gamer to date. I could look for a fun, sarcastic one.
Btw! Don’t miss out on the extra profile questions once you’re done. The sign up flow doesn’t take you through all of them and I almost missed them until I went back into my profile on the top navigation bar.
After trying out the app afterwards, I DID notice the profile options on iOS (not sure about Android) were more extensive than the web version, and included things like:
- Reading preferences
- Movie preferences
- Going out preferences
- Languages spoken
- Pet ownership
- When you started playing
There were quite a number of others, too. 🤔 I guess if you want to have these added, grab the iOS or Android app and have at it.
Ok, up next… let’s review the search capabilities
Searching and finding matches on LFG Dating
There doesn’t appear to be a main “home” feed here for users after you sign up on LFGdating, just the “match” page I showed you earlier.
The search capabilities on LFGdating is a bit more extensive than some of the other gamer dating sites. While it doesn’t go super in-depth like Kippo, it lets you search by,
- Whether they’re open to long distance dating
- Search radius/zip code
- Min and max age range
- Smoking and drinking habits
- What consoles they play/own (including mobile phones! iPhone gamers, rejoice… you’re real gamers too. 🙂)
- Gaming personality
- Gaming frequency
The console search filter was nice because I could find matches to game with using the same device. And also, much like Pepsi vs. Coke and iPhone vs. Android… there’s friendly competition between Xbox and PlayStation players, lol.
Another thing I noticed on the site was this, down by the footer:
While it isn’t a search filter per-say, they give you a few category-based landing pages to see who is likely to be on the LFGdating site. This won’t return any matches, but they have to be popular enough to be listed there, right? RIGHT?! (*secretly dreams of a match who plays D&D*)
Is LFGdating a free gamer dating site?
Yep, LFGdating is free to use, though if you want unlimited access to messaging and a few other features, you’ll have to pony up for the premium subscription.
LFGdating review of free vs. premium features
There wasn’t that big of a difference between free and premium since features are fairly limited to begin with, but let’s get right into it.
What can you do for free on LFGdating?
The free membership lets you do everything from setting up your profile to searching. Overall, LFGdating is fairly basic in functionality with no extra bells and whistles. I could…
Create profile and add pics:
You can create a profile, add 1 main profile photo, and up to 6 additional photos.
Search for potential matches:
You can use the search filters and refine to your heart’s content.
Matches sent to your inbox:
I got a few matches sent right to my inbox, and could check out their profile on the site.
And… that’s about it. *shrug.*
They did say in a recent blog post that things like “winks” are coming, so hopefully they keep expanding features.
What’s included in the LFGdating premium subscription?
The premium membership has a few different tiers, which the image above breaks down nicely.
Prices are (at the time of this blog post):
- $15 for a 1 month subscription
- $35 for a 3 month subscription
- $75 for an annual subscription
You essentially get the following features:
This is something I’ve started considering a “non-negotiable” since lately I’ve been messaging A LOT.
See who is peeping your profile:
You’ll be able to see who viewed your profile.
See who is favoriting your profile:
No secret admirers here. You’ll be able to see who has favorited you, but also… premium members will see that you favorited them as well. Sorry, lurkers.
You know I love an ad-free experience, and this delivers.
New daily matches:
Premium will send you 3 new matches a day, so all you have to do is log in and swipe. *swoon*
The only difference in the LFGdating premium subscription tiers is a discount for buying 3 months or a yearly plan in one go vs. just the monthly. If you’re in it for the long-ish haul, paying for the 3 month plan may be the way to go. It’s the perfect amount of time to try out the features, but not a huge commitment. We love a good discount and being commitment-free… most of the time. 💁♀
But I did notice something else that I wanted to point out…
Difference in premium prices on LFGdating iPhone app
When I was on the iPhone app, I noticed the subscriptions were cheaper. I’m not sure if I was in some sort of promotion loop, or if it’s like this all the time but… worth checking out on the app itself before committing to paying higher from the web.
What sets LFGdating apart from other gamer dating sites?
Since this gamer dating site was a little light on features, there isn't too much that sets it apart. That’s not necessarily a bad thing though, if the focus is in the right place!
What I felt set it apart was,
Founder updates on the blog:
The founders give roadmap updates on the blog. While some things haven’t come to fruition, it’s nice to have a pulse on what they’re considering.
Actually related to gaming:
This seems like a “no duh” statement, but there are filters here related to gaming that other gamer dating sites didn’t have.
It seems like LFGdating keeps user safety and spam in mind.
Read receipts on messages:
This helps because I can tell if I’m being ghosted by someone not interested, or if they just haven’t logged in to read my message.
Pros and cons of LFGdating
After spending a bit of time on LFGdating, here’s what I ended up liking and where I thought there could be some improvement.
What I liked about LFGdating
Clean and minimal:
The whole website and app experience was clean and minimal, which I appreciated
Straight-forward features:While not offering a lot of features, it was easy to understand what I could do on LFGdating without a bunch of hoops to jump through.
Blog updates:The ongoing updates on the blog are nice to keep us in-the-know with upcoming features, even though some didn’t seem to get deployed yet.
A focus on security/safety:The profiles are (supposedly) verified as photos are uploaded and their goal on the site is to keep spam at a minimum. They’re also transparent with who they are, and their parent company.
Matches delivered to my inbox:
The hand (algo) picked matches in my inbox were a nice touch, so I didn’t always have to log in to search.
Read receipts:Like I mentioned in the last section, love love LOVE the read receipts. Receipts are my love language. 💁♀
What I didn’t like about LFGdating
Limited free features:
Since the features are bare-bones to begin with, there wasn’t much to do with the free LFGdating membership.
Smaller user base:
As a niche gamer dating site, it’s expected that the dating pool will be much smaller. I didn’t receive any favorites or messages for quite some time, so it felt pretty empty compared to some sites with a broader base of users.
Slow customer service:
I needed help with my account and customer service was pretty slow at responding. There isn’t a phone number like other dating sites readily offered, so I just had to use the form on the website.
Confusing subscription prices:
The price discrepancies were confusing across the web and app versions. I would have been upset if I signed up for premium on the main site, only to find out the iOS subscription was half the price. I’m not sure if they just haven’t updated the website to reflect the prices, or vice versa.
Some good features were removed:I noticed in a blog post they talked about stealth mode being available in the account settings, but it doesn’t seem to exist anymore. This is one I was really looking forward to, so I’m kinda bummed it’s gone.
So, is LFGdating worth it?
Overall, the site itself has the features needed to match with other gamer hotties, and a great filtering system for this particular niche. I didn’t feel like I was put in any compromising positions or dealing with spam profiles, so I felt safe navigating it.
While it didn’t seem to be as active as other sites like DatePlayer2, I did get some great matches sent to my inbox and made some interesting connections.
Did I take any of my matches offline and meet them IRL? That’s for me to know ;)
