And here we go with diving into more gamer dating sites! Given the tight knit and small(ish) gamer dating community, I’m surprised I haven’t run into the same matches over and over again.
Gamingpassions.com is one I had to unearth when browsing for new gamer dating sites to try. I was a little hesitant to sign up because it looked… well, old, but one thing I’ve learned over time is you can’t judge a dating app by its cover (or pixels); sometimes the ones that look older or aren’t as aesthetically pleasing have a lot going on under the surface!
This applies to people I’ve been matched with as well, lol.
Let’s jump right into the Gaming Passions review. Did it feel safe? Did I get any hookups? Could I live with the free account or did I end up paying monthly?
Head on down for the tea. 🍵
Gaming Passions was established in 2004, so it’s another dating site that I consider a granddaddy in the space. It’s also part of Passions Network, a collection of niche dating sites that cater to various interests and hobbies, which means a lot of members are exposed to it from other sites in the network. It seems like once you create a profile here, you can also explore the full Passions Network if you want to.. Two birds, one stone.
I spent a few weeks on the platform and initially it gave me AOL vibes, but not in a bad way. There were chat rooms and groups, a number of search filters and profile options, and a very “90s” aesthetic.
Some quickie answers you may be curious about before signing up:
How to delete Gaming Passions account: Go to “my account settings” and then “delete account” under the account management section.
Are there verified profiles on Gaming Passions? They don’t offer verified profiles on the site.
Are there camming features? There are camming features on Gaming Passions that users can take advantage of.
Is there a paid plan for Gaming Passions? Yup, there’s a paid plan that costs $4.95 a month.
Is there a free trial for Gaming Passions? If you want to try the paid features, it’s $1 for the first 7 days. Not too shabby.
Will my paid membership get canceled when I delete account? No… you’ll have to contact them separately to make sure you’re not billed once your account is deleted. This information is on the “delete account” page and easy to do.
Are profiles public or private? There’s an option to make your pictures public (so anyone can see them) or “secret.” HOWEVER. 🚩If you want your profile hidden from the search engines, you have to have a paid account.
How do groups work on Gaming Passions? Groups are kind of like a “tag” to identify yourself with when you sign up. So for example, if I added myself to the “Adventure” group, anyone who clicks into the “Adventure” group can see my profile. Think of it as a glorified search filter.
Ah, the question of the hour. Negative, ghost rider. If you’re wanting a gamer dating site with a mobile app to match on the go, this is not the site you’re looking for.
This is another sign up flow that takes a few minutes to do it right, so make sure you’ve carved out the time! You can’t skip it either, because there are certain things required to get to the next step.
First up, head over to the Gaming Passions site to start the sign up process with a username, email and password.
Once you’ve entered that information, the next page had additional questions like height, weight, location, sexual orientation, gender, etc. – which was decently inclusive compared to a lot of other dating sites!
Woooo. Almost there. From here, I could add information for everything under the sun.. it felt that way at least. I had to grab 2 screenshots because of how extensive this page was, but it included everything from the usual physical characteristics to things like Love Language (!!) and Myers-Briggs. I’m not sure how many men will know what their MBTI or Love Language is, but I was thrilled to see this on there. (I’m an INFJ in case you were wondering.)
Once you go through the long list of interests and characteristics, you’re taken to a screen like the one below. This has you choose a “membership” – but it’s nothing paid. It gives you the option to have your profile added to the wider range of Passion networks I mentioned earlier. You can decline this, but if you do, you can’t use the chat rooms or upgrade your account. Womp.
The next screen is for entering a title for your profile (think of it as a catchy headline) and a brief description. It’s worth noting the number of disclaimers here, as it seems they take real and safe profiles seriously.
Next up, you can choose a few groups to be added to. These aren’t functional groups that you can chat in, but they help categorize people so you can look at a group and browse profiles. Again, more disclaimers.
We’re in the home stretch! I wasn’t kidding when I said this was a long process. Now you can add profile pics. Your main one needs to just be your face, but you can add different ones for things like chat rooms. Love your gaming avatar? Cool, you can chat with it.
After the sign up process was over, I was dropped onto my personal homepage. This let me look at recent logins (o0o kinda creepy but also kinda excellent!), newest members, the top groups, top video games, any recent announcements from Gaming Passions, search filters, and so on.
There are a lot of ways to slice and dice the filters when searching for your player two here. Click the “search” dropdown and choose from…
When you start browsing for actual members, you can do a quick search by,
From there, you have the option to use “Advanced Search” which opens up a whole new can of worms.
This might just have the most search filters I’ve come across on a dating site. There are two categories you can input, but there’s no less than 35 categories to choose from.
I was able to search for hotties by things like drinking habits, smoking habits, if they’re ‘high sensation seekers’, highly sensitive, political views, their profession, income level, social justice views, and so on.
The “social justice” one was especially intriguing because it let me choose what kind of advocate I was looking for like “black lives matter advocate” “climate change believer”, “me too movement advocate”... and on that note, I really appreciated this because I could find matches who are supportive of women’s rights.
I was also able to search by groups/passions. This had everything from strategy, to adventure, to esports and more.
Overall, Gaming Passions makes it easy to find the perfect match. Even when I was being super picky with my filtering, I was able to find gamers and send them a “smooch” or mini-message to kickstart the convo.
Sorry gals, it’s not completely free, but you can do a lot with just the free account.
As a free member of Gaming Passions, you get access to a range of features like:
One thing I noticed is there’s something called “Passions Points” that you can accumulate. You can earn these by doing various tasks on the site, like joining (super easy), filling out your profile fully, and so on.
There’s a lot that can be done with Passions Points like…
There were also a number of other rewards. The virtual gifts looked pretty fun…
Outside of the free trial that costs $1 for 7 days, there’s a Premium Gaming Passions tier for $4.95/month, which is one of the lowest priced monthly memberships I’ve come across. 🎉
The Premium tier allows you to do more of the things you can already do with the free account, and ad-free, at that.
I ended up paying for the Premium tier for privacy. It’s so cheap that it’s a no-brainer imo.
There were a couple of things I noticed right off the bat, even while going through the registration process:
I had to think this through, as there were a lot of features and options I liked compared to other gamer dating sites, but also areas where I feel like Gaming Passions was lacking. Here’s where I landed on what I liked, and didn’t.
This Gaming Passions review was one I spent a lot more time on than usual. I really did appreciate the effort the founder(s) put into building out features and trying to keep it mostly free. I’ll be the first to admit that it took a bit to start getting messages, matches, or even people sending me a smooch. BUT. The quality of the guys and gals who connected with me were great. I only ended up going on a handful of dates (along with some… super spicy offline chats) but have no regrets.
If you’re looking for a gamer dating site that feels safe without being inundated with questionable messages right off the bat, Gaming Passions will be great for you! Being able to use the different actions (like “smooch”) takes the pressure off users who aren’t sure how to start a conversation without feeling awkward, so this allows you to initiate it when you receive one.
Overall, it felt like a good (and safe) dating site to add into the mix. If you’re concerned about privacy and dating under the radar though, pony up for the paid account like I did – it’s only $4.95/month and you’ll be able to keep your profile completely private outside of the Gaming Passions site.
