The new year is here, and much like everyone else, I'm looking to shed those excess holiday pounds. The catch is that I'm also looking for someone to date, and I'm feeling a little self conscious about the extra padding around my waist. As I was eating (a healthy-ish) lunch, I was venting to my friend about my issue, when she told me I didn't need to choose between health and love, I could have both!! She told me how one of her friends had tried a similar site and it helped with the motivation to make some lifestyle changes - I don't think I can fill this registration form fast enough!
Fitness Singles is a fitness dating website with the goal of connecting those who have healthy lifestyles for dating or friendship. When reading some Fitness Singles reviews and browsing the homepage, I loved how there were a ton of âfitness passionsâ to choose from â everything from adventure racing to jump rope! While the site looked a bit old school, it seems the membership base is very active (pun intended!) with a healthy number of users.
Letâs see what this dating site is like â on to my Fitness Singles review!
Based in Buffalo, NY, Fitness Singles was created in 2003 for people who like to work out and meet like-minded individuals, and eventually evolved into dating and community! There is a large database of users with over 2 million members, with about 40,000 of them being active on the site. While health and fitness is part of Fitness Singles' theme, most people are on the site looking for dates rather than workout partners.
It seems to be more male dominated on the Fitness Singles dating app, and while a lot of the male users look to be in their fifties or older, there were plenty of guys who were in their twenties and thirties. Most users are from the US, but it's possible to meet someone from Australia, Great Britain, and Canada as well on their separate country specific subdomains.
Fitness Singles is for people who:
âď¸Are US based singles looking for other fit, healthy singles.
âď¸Are interested in committed relationships, rather than casual hookups.
âď¸Are interested in finding friendship with other fit, healthy people.
âď¸Have active lifestyles.
Fitness Singles may not be ideal for people who:
âď¸Are looking for casual hookups or short-term relationships.
âď¸Are looking for a dating site that has profile verification.
âď¸Are not interested in being physically active.
âď¸Are looking for a fitness dating site with extensive features.
After creating a profile and uploading some pics, Fitness Singles' Quality Assurance team will review them to make sure there's no nudity or uncomfortable content. My original photo got declined as âInappropriateâ (it was just my face, how rude!) so I had to try again.
Once approved, I was able to search the profiles of other members to find my potential match. I could use the basic search, a custom search, search by username, or select from the match suggestions. I could also shoot my shot with one of the "Top 25" most popular members.
I was able to save or "show interest" in someone's profile, but was unable to message someone without paying for a subscription. The layout is pretty basic, so there are minimal distractions and no ads so my dating experience was uninterrupted⌠besides the fact that I couldn't message anyone, lol.
ă° ď¸In the gray zone.
I find the legitimacy of Fitness Singles to beâŚquestionable. The site itself didn't really raise any red flags - it was the Fitness Singles reviews I read that raised my eyebrows (and my flags!).
On the Better Business Bureau's website (where it has an A+ rating), the majority of complaints were due to accounts being closed for no reason without issuing refunds. Another main issue were members running into "zombie accounts", which is basically a shell of someone's old profile that they no longer use. Also, people mentioned the lack of responses and activity even in major cities such as Los Angeles.
With that being said, Fitness Singles says they have 24/7 vetting and removal of fake profiles, encrypted storage for all personal information, as well as prompt customer services and response times should you have concerns.
According to the site, it has been featured on well known outlets such as, "The Today Show", "Good Morning America", and the "Herald Sun". Before purchasing a subscription, I would suggest doing your homework and spending time on the site before taking the plunge.
Fitness Singles does pretty much what its name suggests - it's a dating site for single fitness fanatics. Here are my initial thoughts on Fitness-Singles.com:
Of course, I couldn't do a Fitness Singles review without asking some questions! Here's what I needed to know:
How to delete Fitness Singles app: you can cancel your subscription at any time by clicking on "My Account" in the top menu, then look for "Subscription Status", and click on "Cancel Paid Subscription". If you want to cancel a free membership, go to "My Account" and click on "Remove Profile". There is also the option to hide your profile under "My Account" and unhide your profile whenever you want.
How to increase Fitness Singles profile views: if you're not receiving any responses, try these tips to increase your chances of getting noticed:
How to block a user on Fitness Singles: after opening a message or viewing someone's profile, you have the option to block that member by clicking on "Block Member". If you blocked them by accident or changed your mind, you can remove the block by going to "Blocked Members" on your Messages page and choosing the person you want to unblock.
Is Fitness-Singles.com free to use?: Thereâs a free account, yes!
Does the Fitness Singles app have matchmaking?: Yes, bb! You can either manually search for potential matches, or leave it up to their algorithm and see the recommendations under âMatches.â
Is Fitness Singles only for dating?: Itâs primarily for dating, but it can also be used for finding workout friends. (Not as easy when youâre a woman tho!)
Can I hide my Fitness Singles profile?: Yes, if you want to stay incognito and hide it for a while from new searches, the options are in your account settings⌠and itâs not a paid upgrade! Keep in mind, youâll still be visible to people youâve already contacted though.
âNope!
Would you be mad at me if I said no? Well bbs, I hate to break it to ya, but there is no mobile app as of yet. I was able to login from my phone and use the mobile version of the site though.
đ˘SLOW! Probably close to 10 minutes.
Fitness Singles makes signing up for their site a breeze with their built in registration form right on their homepage!
Here's what it took to sign up for Fitness Singles:
1. Here's the fields I have to fill out in order to get started:
2. Next I choose my country and type in my zip code.
3. I think up a clever username with at least 4 characters and carry on.
4. I come up with a password that no one will guess!
5. I provide my email address in order to finish the process - and feel confident knowing that itâs kept private from those on the site! (Even though itâs expected⌠always nice to be reassured.)
6. Which activities do I like? HmmmâŚthere are so many to choose from â just take a look at the screenshot below! BTW, I love how this plays into the whole fitness theme. I do love rollerblading!
7. Sticking true to its roots, Fitness Singles has me pick my 3 fave activities/exercises and determine my skill set for each. There are three different skill levels to choose from: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced. Hopefully this keeps me from matching with someone that has expert paintballing experience where Iâm doomed to lose every time! đ
8. I try my best to describe my body type between a range of "a few extra pounds" to "slim/slender", with the option to not say.
9. This next step is one I haven't seen before - describe my looks, ranging from âaverageâ to âstunning.â I'm personally in favor of the "you decide" option.
10. Here's another different question - what's my best feature? Everything is physical (arms, back, butt, lips, etc) except for "personality.â
11. How tall am I?
12. I also have to put my weight inâŚno cute or funny alternate options to choose from here. This would be more convenient if they combined this question with the height one and put these both on one page.
13. I select my ethnicity from a list of choices, or I don't have to say.
14. What color is my hair? Not for nothing, but can't the person tell what color my hair is from my profile? And how does this help me find a fitness match?
15. What color are my eyes? Again, this could have been coupled up with the what color is my hair questionâŚbut whatevs.
16. Declare my marital status - or not⌠(yes, Iâm stillllll single and never married.)
17. I say whether I have kids or not, and if so, do they live at home?
19. If I have kids, do I want more? Or if I have none, do I want any?
19. I choose my religion (from a pretty extensive list), and am starting to question my decision to not pour myself a glass of wine before starting this sign up process! Luckily I can choose not to share that here.
20. I'm not really sure what religion has to do with fitness, but I'll play along. I choose how often I attend religious services, if ever.
21. What's my highest level of education?
22. I type in my occupation or can choose "I'll do this laterâ (finally!!).
23. What's my employment status? My ADHD is starting to kick in, please end soon!
24. I can say the amount I make in a year or I can keep it to myself.
25. Now this question actually makes sense for a fitness based dating siteâŚwhat's my diet? This has everything from a bodybuilding diet to veganism.
26. Now I choose how active I am⌠I feel like they should have led with these questions!
27. Pouring myself a drink as I choose my answer on whether or not I smoke, and if it bothers me. (Also⌠what kind of smoking are we talking about here?!)
28. Next, do I drink? I think you all know the answer to this next question!
29. Which language(s) do I speak? English is already pre-selected.
30. OMG we're on the final step! Get double the likes and messages when you add a pic!
31. LIARS!! LOL! Turns out that wasn't the final stepâŚI need to create a catchy headline, but I can do this later if I want to.
31. I can fill out the âabout meâ section, or leave the default message that's there.
32. I'm FINALLY done!!!! I feel like I passed a test!!
Now I see my first view of the main feed.
The main feed for the Fitness Singles dating app is pretty bare bones, but not in a bad way. The top navigation letâs me:
The first thing in the feed is a match picked for me. Here, I can show interest (with a yes/no), see their age, location, and which activities they like.
Underneath that, I can see members who have sent me a message, and new members nearby. Thereâs also a sidebar to see who has recently viewed my profile, and if any of my saved profiles are online right now! Thatâs pretty much it. Like I said, itâs a bit basic but gives you everything you need!
The profiles on Fitness Singles contain high quality images, where I was able to clearly see the faces of users, plus view any additional photos they have without needing to upgrade to a paid account. There weren't too many graphics, but the plain fonts made the content easy to read.
This is what you can see or do on a profile:
I could appreciate the amount of info that was on a person's profile â including the activities they chose â as it gave me a good idea of whether or not I wanted to talk with that person or if I would enjoy how they spend their time!
As far as my profile (or yours, if you sign up!) you can edit everything on there, including who youâre looking for and activities you enjoy, at any time. Consider this your ongoing âfitness and activityâ dating resume!
đSearch filters and algorithm matchmaking.
The search features on Fitness Singles are extensive and gave me a ton of options. I could search by:
It also allows you to search other countries, but nothing came up. Presumably because I need to use their country based subdomains.
The Fitness Singles app also plays matchmaker! If you click into âMatchesâ youâll be able to see who they chose for you, according to your location and what youâre seeking.
The matches seemed pretty spot on, and I enjoyed the ones they sent me.
â Yes
Yes it is, to a point. I wasn't able to do much with my Fitness Singles free membership, but I didn't have to pay!
Fitness-Singles.com has a free membership, but it's pretty limited. IMO, if you like the Fitness Singles dating app, it really makes a difference to pay so you can actually talk to people rather than just stare at them and save their profiles. Iâll get into the free account features next!
Not everyone wants to pay for a dating membership, but sometimes a free membership just doesn't cut it. Here's what I was able to do for nothing at all:
đ°Ranges from $7.99 - $19.95/month depending on length of time.
The cost for Fitness Singles Premium membership is:
It doesn't alway pay to⌠wellâŚpay, but in this case, you really can't do much on Fitness-Singles.com without a Premium membership. I found that the only real extra feature of the Premium membership was being able to contact other members:
The nice thing about 12 months is they offer something called the âPerfect Fit Guaranteeâ meaning if youâre not satisfied with your experience the first 12 months (and âin good standingâ) you can contact customer support and theyâll extend your membership up to 12 months for free, on top of your existing one.
Fitness Singles makes it easy to pay for a membership by offering several different payment methods including: Debit/credit card, PayPal, check, or money order.
With so many dating sites out there (and a few niche fitness dating ones!), it's hard to keep up and tell which ones are worth checking out. I usually rely heavily on the features to help me make a decision. Here's what unique deets caught my eye while working on this Fitness Singles review:
It's hard to know which dating apps to invest in, especially when youâre looking for one to match you in a specific niche. I loved how Fitness Singles combined both health and love, but what didn't I like? Be prepared to find out!
Fitness Singles was fun to check out since it combines dating with working out and healthy activities.
Here's what else I liked about the Fitness Singles app:
You can't win them all, and there were a few areas where Fitness Singles fell short. Here's what they missed:
I really loved the concept behind the Fitness Singles dating app, but as a site that has been around for two decades, I just thought it would be moreâŚfleshed out. It lacks a mobile app, doesnât have a catchy layout, and since you canât message members with a free account, the only thing you can do is save their profile and let them know youâre interested.
I will say, I did get some messages during my time there, so at least there was activity! Despite the relatively small membership pool, Fitness-Singles.com is a good intro into the fitness dating scene and I enjoyed using it while working on this dating review. However, you may be better off spending your money elsewhere unless you really find a few potential matches youâre dying to chat with â in that case, sign up for a 1 month membership and give it a try.
