Up next on my dating quest… a hookup site you’ve probably heard of or been curious about – AdultFriendFinder. AFF (as it’s affectionately referred to) gained attention and controversy for its focus on casual connections and adult-oriented encounters, much like Ashley Madison.
With a blend of curiosity and an open mind, I delved into the realm of AdultFriendFinder so we can chat about its features, registration process, pricing, search capabilities, and what sets it apart from other dating sites. Ready to dive into the AdultFriendFinder review? Let’s do it!
Before diving into the specifics, we have to address the elephant in the virtual room that seems to be on most people’s minds when using a hookup app: Is AdultFriendFinder legit?
The site has been around since 1996 (which is older than some of us! 😬) and has amassed a significant user base. Still, it's necessary for us gals to exercise caution and be aware of potential risks associated with any online dating platform – especially one focused on casual hookups.
Personally, I was a wee bit skeptical about this, since despite being around for so long, there’s still a chance that I could run into trouble. I know, even in the age where everyone’s online (myself included) you never know what you’re gonna run into with hookups.
AdultFriendFinder reviews and experiences have been mixed, with some users finding success in fulfilling their desires and connecting with like-minded individuals, while others have encountered fake profiles and scammers. With this in mind, I was pretty vigilant when signing up for the AdultFriendFinder app.
Worth noting they have a few awards on their homepage which may help the trust factor a bit.
Overall, AdultFriendFinder is exactly what I expected to find and maybe a bit too much in terms of spice because it mixes adult content, like webcams, with regular dating options.
That said, AdultFriendFinder caters to:
People of all genders seeking casual (very!) encounters and spicy relationships.
AdultFriendFinder has millions of members worldwide so there are plenty of connections to explore.
It's important to note that AdultFriendFinder deviates from the conventional dating site model and focuses on providing a space for individuals seeking non-traditional connections.
I had a lot of questions before joining AdultFriendFinder so I pulled them into here with some answers for you:
Is AdultFriendFinder Free? Yep, there’s a free version available that has decent features to use. I’ll discuss this a bit later.
Is AdultFriendFinder for Swingers Too? Yup, if you’re in a couple and looking to swing, you can do that on AdultFriendFinder. That’s not something I’m in too (because, sadly, I’m single) but I do know a couple that’s had a relatively easy time on there finding others.
How to Delete AdultFriendFinder Account: They (luckily) make it easy to delete your account. You can do this by going to “edit profile” clicking “close my account” then navigating to the “delete my account” option at the bottom.
Can I Temporarily Hide my AFF Account? Yep, you can do this too! It’s found in the same place. Just head to the same place as above, but click “hide my profile.” This will hide anything you’ve posted on the site if you want to be incognito for a bit.
What Kind of Communication Options Does AdultFriendFinder Have? AdultFriendFinder.com has a lot of different communication options like instant messaging and webcam sessions, if you want to get a bit more intimate.
What’s the Hotlist? The Hotlist feature allows you to add profiles of members you find interesting, making it easier to keep track of potential connections and revisit them later.
What’s Cupid Preferences? This is their fancy way of saying they find potential matches based on preferences and interests. That’s all.
Getting started on AdultFriendFinder is relatively straightforward, with the registration process designed to be user-friendly and efficient. Busy gals, rejoice!
Here's a walkthrough of the sign-up process:
First up, sign up and state who you are and what you’re looking for. This was nice because for the couples, it allowed you to say if you were a man/woman, two women, two men.
On the next screen, you enter your email, password, location information, and a brief bio.
Then a screen pops up to verify your email address.
Once you’re all set up, you can adjust things like your profile, how much nudity you want to see (which you may want to adjust – there’s a lot). On the profile side, there were pretty extensive options I could check off. It also had a different way of gauging your personality, by giving you questions and allowing you to answer from “strongly disagree” to “strongly agree.”
You can also confirm your identity with “ConfirmID” if you’d like, which adds another layer of trust for your profile if you do it, but also someone that you’re interested in matching with, since you can see that they’re confirmed. No catfishes here… hopefully.
Your personal homepage shows potential hookups, along with who is livestreaming. I’ve blocked out names and pictures for privacy reasons:
AdultFriendFinder offers robust search capabilities to help users find potential matches based on their preference, with both the free and paid version offering detailed searches. Of course, contacting them is a challenge if you’re a free member, but we’ll get into that later.
Outside of who you are and what you’re looking for gender/relationship wise, there’s also:
Who's on IM
Members online now
Members broadcasting now
Members with photos
Members with video
Highlighted members
Confirmed members
Verified members
Gold members
VIP members
You can drill down into more options (very extensive ones, at that) as well.
Here are some notable features of the search capabilities:
Searching By Member Status: It was nice to be able to search for paid members, depending on what tier they have.
Kink Search: Prefer a specific brand of kink? This is for you! This unique feature allows users to search for possible connections who share specific kinks or fetishes, ensuring compatibility and fulfilling experiences.
Username Search: If you have a particular username in mind from a different dating site, or wish to find someone you've previously connected with, AdultFriendFinder offers a username search option. I didn’t end up using this feature, however.
AdultFriendFinder offers free and paid membership options, each with its own features and limitations. The free membership isn’t that robust and I found myself frustrated when trying to view profiles, but let’s see what there was.
This was incredibly basic compared to some other sites. It had,
Basic profile creation: I was able to create a profile and provide info about myself.
Browsing and limited search access: I was able to explore the site but the majority of the member profiles weren’t available for me to click into and required an upgrade to Gold.
Sending winks: Free members can send winks to show interest in other users, but they aren’t able to reply to any messages.
Access to blogs and forums: AdultFriendFinder features various discussion forums and blogs where free members can engage with the community.
Sex Academy: There’s a sex academy with quite a few free “courses” to take.
Other community options: There are also things like Erotic Stories (we love a good spicy story!), a magazine, groups, etc.
There are other options like the Hotlist and Tip (to be noticed immediately) that require points (more on that to come) and Flirt which requires a Gold membership.
All in all, the free AdultFriendFinder dating account is pretty limited.
The Gold Membership ranges from $27.95/month to $14.95/month when billed yearly. You can also upgrade to an additional tier so free members can contact you, which won’t fly with just the Gold tier.
Before you drop down those dollars, ask yourself if the paid membership is worth it. Here are some benefits you get if you want to take that plunge.
Unlimited access to members: You can see everything.
Bling: You can add bling to your profile, and there’s definitely some fun ones in there.
Messaging: Paid members can access features such as sending and receiving messages, initiating chats, and engaging in video chats. The video chat feature is a biggie for me, as I mentioned in another post. It helps with the trust factor. If you want to be able to engage with free members however, you’ll have to pony up a bit more.
Full profile access: Paid members can view complete profiles, including spicy photos and videos shared by other users. Not being able to click into the profiles in the free account was killing me softly.
Priority listing: The search filters allow people to look for VIP, Gold etc. If you’re a paid member, you’ll show up here – giving you more visibility. There’s also a badge on the profiles showing what type of account you have.
You can also buy points to Tip, send Virtual Gifts, and Hotlist, among other things for a fairly reasonable price:
There does appear to be an app for iOS, however I’m unsure if the Android app in the Google Play Store is legit, as I’m not a green bubble chick. If you’re on Android, I’d maybe pop into AdultFriendFinder Reddit and confirm.
I did see a page (that looks fairly outdated) on the site talking about their Android version but it required approving downloads from an unknown source which is 100% sketch imo.
With that said, AdultFriendFinder is optimized for mobile browsers, so just visit the website with the mobile browser of your choice for an optimized experience on the go.
AdultFriendFinder stands out amongst the crowded online dating sites for several reasons. Here are a few aspects that differentiate the platform after spending time on various dating sites:
Live Model Webcams: This was pretty cool. Even though I’m not into it myself, I haven’t seen this accessible on many other dating or hookup sites. You can do things like send messages, “whisper” chat with them, and so on. You can also interact with them by giving them tips, gifts and more to become a “Top Admirer” which has its own perks.
Broadcasting: You can even broadcast yourself, so it’s kind of a hybrid of Twitch meets dating meets hookups.
Community Based: There were location and interest-based groups that I could participate in, which I liked. While I’m not really here to get super involved in those, the option was fairly unique.
Wide Age Range: From ages 18-80+, you can find pretty much any age range here to hookup with.
Sex Academy: This was a nice addition that I only noticed on a limited number of other dating sites.
Spicy Stories: The Erotic Stories section was a nice touch for those who want some sexy literature without actually chatting with others.
After trying out Adult Friend Finder for a bit of time, checking out the hotties and connecting with them, here’s what I found were both the good and not-so-good.
So what did I absolutely ~love~?
Thriving and large community: I’ve been on many sites that are either empty or filled with bots, but AdultFriendFinder is filled with people who share the same interests, if you know what I mean. It may take a bit to find your crowd, but when you do, you won’t want to quit.
ConfirmID: I liked knowing that users can go through the process of verifying their ID and get a badge, so I knew who was safe to engage with (and wouldn’t catfish me… or at least, had the lowest probability).
Lots of filtering options: I could find anybody for almost anything here because of the robust profiles and search options.
Dating related content: I also appreciated the additional things like Sex Academy courses (in case someone needs a little…help), Erotic Stories, groups, etc.
Of course, no dating site is perfect. Here’s what I didn’t like about it.
Costs add up: The monthly fees don’t seem bad, but after using it for a while, I realized that I had spent hundreds! Be sure that you budget, and don’t be afraid to cancel your membership if you have had your fill. I really wasn’t a fan of how limited the free account was.
Clutter: At this point, I feel like I know the site like the back of my hand. But newcomers may feel that the site is a little cluttered or layered with too many options. Some like a site full of options, but others may like the simplified, sleek look you expect in 2020s web design.
Ads, ads, ads!: There’s a lot of ads throughout the site that make using it a little frustrating. We already have enough ads pop up when we’re online, finding hookups shouldn’t be infiltrated with them as well. 😐
AdultFriendFinder is great if you’re looking for, well, an adult friend. You can find someone who meets your lifestyle, kinks, and is in your area but you’re gonna have to pay to play. This site may be more interesting to those who are into adult content like webcams etc, so if that’s not your speed, you can ignore it and focus on dating.
With that said, your mileage may vary. Come to AdultFriendFinder with an open mind, but know when what you’ve spent hasn’t yielded you the hookups you desire.
